Rather enjoyable adventure...

I sat down to watch the 2021 animated movie "Scooby-Doo! The Sword and the Scoob" together with my 10 year old son, whom enjoy these animated movies quite a lot.

And every now and again there is a unique addition to the "Scooby-Doo" franchise, and I will say that "Scooby-Doo! The Sword and the Scoob" was definitely one of those instances. Why? Well, because the story in this was particularly enjoyable, and the characters were quite interesting as well.

The storyline told in this particular "Scooby-Doo" adventure was rather enjoyable, and it was one that really appealed to me, given my interest in the dark ages and role-playing games, so this was definitely pure fun.

As with many previous "Scooby-Doo" adventures, it is always a blast to have the voice acting talents of Grey Griffin, Matthew Lillard, Frank Welker and Kate Micucci on the cast list. And this particular 2021 adventure also had the voice of Nick Frost on the list.

The art style and animation is very enjoyable, and it has that classic "Scooby-Doo" feel to it that I grew up watching and still enjoy this to this day.

My rating of "Scooby-Doo! The Sword and the Scoob" settles on a well-deserved seven out of ten stars. If you enjoy these animated movies, then you most certainly have to sit down to watch this 2021 addition to the franchise.

standard Scooby adventure

After solving another mystery, the gang goes on vacation in London. They drive the Mystery Machine into the countryside and arrive at a town which is the former site of Camelot. Somehow, they are brought back in time and they wake up in old Camelot.

This is animated Scooby-Doo adventure. It maintains the standard Scooby tropes. It has its fun. It's one more episode. It's not going to break any new ground. The fantastical is explained in a ridiculous way and the mask is always pulled off.

it actually was pretty good

In all honesty I haven't seen an enjoyable Scooby Doo in a long time. This was.... okay. Different from the classic scooby doo's, ending felt a bit like ' they had to squeeze in a bad guy somewhere' moment. I think this is the new standard of scooby doo and from all the bad 'creative' ones, this one was okay.

It's very average and it looks like amatures did it, somehow. I really don't get this plot. Why Arthur painted as evil and lazy king if the real story says opposite. This plot didn't have logical view, characters didn't convince me at all(not to mention that creepy dance by Daphne, it looked like she was mentally ill). I'm grown up now and I don't feel hype at all. I'm sure, when I was kid, the quality standed over quantity. Maybe create less movies but better ones? Huh...

Scooby Doo goes medieval

Have been a big fan of Scooby Doo since single digits. Love most of the incarnations, especially 'Scooby Doo Where are You' and 'The Scooby Doo Show', and even like a couple of the negatively received ones better than most (personally considered 'The 13 Ghosts of Scooby Doo' underrated). Most of the animated Scooby Doo films range between good and great, especially 'Zombie Island' and 'Witch's Ghost'. Didn't care for every single one of them, 'Monster of Mexico' didn't do much for me and 'Return to Zombie Island' was a real disappointment.

There was no doubt about seeing 'The Sword and the Scoob', not just because of Scooby Doo completest sake but also the idea was truly fascinating and pretty unique for the franchise. There is also nothing wrong with being different and different has come off well, 'Goblin King' was a change of pace also and am personally quite fond of that. 'The Sword and the Scoob' turned out to be highly enjoyable and well done. Not on the same level as 'Zombie Island' and 'Witch's Ghost' but infinitely better than the previous two Scooby Doo films.

Good things are many. The animation is vibrantly colourful and atmospheric, everything looking smooth and the backgrounds are rich in detail. The music had groove and atmosphere and didn't sound outdated or out of place. The voice acting is on the money with no exception, especially Matthew Lillard who has proven himself to be a more than worthy successor to the immortal Casey Kasem. Not as good, but the best Shaggy voice actor since as he is the only successor to nail the mix of funny, endearing goofiness and likeability.

Referencing is smart and nostalgic, never feeling thrown in, random or cheesy. 'The Sword and the Scoob' has a lot of funny writing that also flows and has heart. Shaggy's lines are especially fun. The throwbacks to the past are done with respect and affection for classic Scooby, which was a delight for this fan. There is a nicely paced and engaging story, thin on mystery but not over obvious and benefits massively from the colourful and nostalgic medieval setting and the imaginative and non confusing time travel. As well as some nice creepy conflict. Scooby and Shaggy are nailed and Velma is at her least annoying and true to character in a while. Did enjoy Daphne's stronger and more quirky personality and it gels a lot better than in 'Happy Halloween Scooby Doo'.

Not everything works. Merlin's character writing is far too silly and this is the least likeable and actually pretty obnoxious interpretation of King Arthur in recent memory. Am aware and appreciate what the film was trying to do, but for me it didn't work. The ending is too much of a tacked on cheat and is too neat.

Once again, Fred comes over as rather wet and borderline sappy. Where is the more resourceful leader that makes the decisions of the earlier incarnations?

Concluding, highly enjoyable. 7/10.

Scooby-Doo! The Sword and the Scoob

These straight to DVD Scooby-Doo films are always a bit hit and miss, but they do tend to be a bit more 'out there' than the TV series.

Sending the gang back in time is a neat idea, but there are some very long, plodding scenes, and everyone, medieval or not speaks as if it's 2021, which is jarring.

At least Fred isn't a total idiot for a change, but this wasn't one of my favourite outings for the gang.

Excellent Scooby Doo Film!

Nice return to form.

Like any long series with many different iterations some direct to video Scooby Doo adventures are better than others. This is one of them. Really liked the humour, the 2D animation style is perfect (3d , lego, and stylized2d is all not as good as this style). It kept it consistent that probably all the monsters are eventually debunked at the end. Much like you know who is guilty in a columbo episode from the start but how you get there is the fun.

Nice references to a classic "Thundarr the barbarian" by the same creators. Hopefully this might mean they are finally going to revive this series too.

We rented it via internet and it was well worth the price.

Highly recommended.

Yet Another Subpar Scooby

This is really low quality stuff. The best moments were the shout-outs to the older series. Thank God we can still go back and watch those. Even many of the older movies are good. This wasn't. There just wasn't much magic in this one. And the ending is ridiculously stupid. Even the character designs for Arthur and Merlin and a dragon are all pretty terrible. And the animation is the same stale work unfortunately.

All the men are stupid and useless for the first half of the runtime. Fred doesn't think DNA has anything to do with solving mysteries or that the Brits drive on the opposite side of the road. At one point he literally shivers in fright while Daphne and Velma heroically stand up to the villain. Daphne is now a complete perfect Mary Sue. That is so boring. It may have been progressive ten years ago but, sadly, at this point in time if they wanted to subvert our expectations with gender roles they need to show Fred being competent and heroic again. And arguably one of the most heroic and good men in all of fiction, King Arthur, is portrayed as a bumbling, selfish, stupid jerk. Both Fred and Arthur do end up re turning to form for the most part but that inconsistency only highlights how dumb their earlier portrayals were.

Fingers crossed the next one is better. I did like how they showed Daphne and Fred as a couple. But bring back the darker colors, the spooky atmosphere, and the MYSTERY.

scobby doo goes back to the dark ages

Yet another fascinating and fun scooby doo movie. This time the gang are transported to medieval times after shaggy goes looking for where his ancestors used to live. There are some interesting characters and I thought nick frost did a good merlin. Jason issacs played king arthur. He came off as a good friend to the gang and someone that we could see again. As usural shaggy and scoobs apitite leads them to danger and we get an interesting movie as velma believes time travel is not real and tries to dissprove everything. Dalphne and freds romance goes no where but there is a hint of something there. Overall this is another fun scooby doo adventure with a fresh interesting idea and good supporting voice cast.

Very different from the rest of them!

I think that movie was very different from the other Scooby doo movies. I haven't see all of them but i have seen many and this movie had very unique story and elements. The writing was also very clever.

I honestly don't get the logic of people who love this!

Why was this movie ever created, and most inportantly, WHY/HOW DO PEOPLE EVEN STILL LIKE IT?! It doesn't make any sense! This movie was completely out of the Scooby Doo context. I mean, seriously? If you wanna make crossovers, make them into the "Scooby Doo and guess who?" series, but not here too! It's just awful! Never watch this if you don't wanna waste an hour of your life for a garbage!

When you have being watching Scooby-Doo since you were a kid, you really wait for the next new movie. I loved this movie so much. The story was different, I liked the characters, the location, everything. You can really guess what's this movie is about in the first 15 min but you really enjoy the ride.
