In the opening we witness the most ridiculous way to botch a diplomatic mission. Because of a cat. The immaturity in the entire scene is jaw-dropping. They don't research the culture before they make contacts?
Then we have the Star Fleet Academy opening. Whoever wrote that speech deserves... to be fired. Have the writer attended any opening ceremony / commencement address IRL? Who talks like that? The small number of trainees is absurd, and scaling issues make it painfully obvious that's it's CGI. And seriously, "Archer Spacedock", after a thousand years? That's a cheap way to do nostalgia. Might as well have named it after Burnham, who literally just saved galactic civilization, and would actually have made sense since she's invited to give the opening address.
What's with the animosity between Burnham and the new president anyway? That's uncalled for and disrespectful. If I were asked to "define 'ready'", I would answer "anyone but Burnham". The president is like the only mature person in the room, and on the show.
Meanwhile in the space station rescue we meet the most irritating and incompetent officer since Rosa Salazar from Short Treks. How did he get his command? He even pulled a phaser on his fellow officer! And we are supposed to feel sad when he died? Who else died? Two of the three casualties would be from Discovery's crew, but remained nameless. Since Discovery started out with a crew of around a hundred, maybe someone should do the counting like others did with Voyager's shuttlecrafts.
Regarding science, couldn't Discovery have used the tractor beam to slow the station's rotation? And why couldn't Discovery detect the "Oort cloud" debris field of methane ice despite sensors that could detect stuff from light years away? Couldn't Discovery deflect them with the DEFLECTOR dish? You don't need a physics degree to know that it's far easier to deflect an object's trajectory than arresting its full momentum by blocking it using the shield. And how on Earth would methane ice block their transporter? Nothing makes sense.
Finally what's with NuTrek's love of blowing up planets? We've lost Romulus, Vulcan, and now for the love of god Kwejian. The only planet we have been remotely introduced to in this future, and now it's gone. Why should I even care? I've been desensitized to blown up planets, no thanks to the Star Wars sequel trilogy. Remember the loss you felt in DS9 when Cardassia was bombed from orbit? That's a culture you knew and cared about, therefore you felt sad seeing the destruction. I felt nothing with Kwejian. Kindly fire the writers and hire just anyone who passed writing lessons in middle school.
