Insolent and immature
isabellacheng18 November 2021
Warning: Spoilers
In the opening we witness the most ridiculous way to botch a diplomatic mission. Because of a cat. The immaturity in the entire scene is jaw-dropping. They don't research the culture before they make contacts?

Then we have the Star Fleet Academy opening. Whoever wrote that speech deserves... to be fired. Have the writer attended any opening ceremony / commencement address IRL? Who talks like that? The small number of trainees is absurd, and scaling issues make it painfully obvious that's it's CGI. And seriously, "Archer Spacedock", after a thousand years? That's a cheap way to do nostalgia. Might as well have named it after Burnham, who literally just saved galactic civilization, and would actually have made sense since she's invited to give the opening address.

What's with the animosity between Burnham and the new president anyway? That's uncalled for and disrespectful. If I were asked to "define 'ready'", I would answer "anyone but Burnham". The president is like the only mature person in the room, and on the show.

Meanwhile in the space station rescue we meet the most irritating and incompetent officer since Rosa Salazar from Short Treks. How did he get his command? He even pulled a phaser on his fellow officer! And we are supposed to feel sad when he died? Who else died? Two of the three casualties would be from Discovery's crew, but remained nameless. Since Discovery started out with a crew of around a hundred, maybe someone should do the counting like others did with Voyager's shuttlecrafts.

Regarding science, couldn't Discovery have used the tractor beam to slow the station's rotation? And why couldn't Discovery detect the "Oort cloud" debris field of methane ice despite sensors that could detect stuff from light years away? Couldn't Discovery deflect them with the DEFLECTOR dish? You don't need a physics degree to know that it's far easier to deflect an object's trajectory than arresting its full momentum by blocking it using the shield. And how on Earth would methane ice block their transporter? Nothing makes sense.

Finally what's with NuTrek's love of blowing up planets? We've lost Romulus, Vulcan, and now for the love of god Kwejian. The only planet we have been remotely introduced to in this future, and now it's gone. Why should I even care? I've been desensitized to blown up planets, no thanks to the Star Wars sequel trilogy. Remember the loss you felt in DS9 when Cardassia was bombed from orbit? That's a culture you knew and cared about, therefore you felt sad seeing the destruction. I felt nothing with Kwejian. Kindly fire the writers and hire just anyone who passed writing lessons in middle school.

Patchy
florinsasu19 November 2021
It's understandable that this episode will lack cohesion, while trying to present too many stories at one time: starting new ones, tieing in old ones... but the main complain that it feels to lack the qualities of star trek still remains. The over confidence of Michael is almost a cliché. Otoh, we get that Adira is young and not sure of oneself, no need for Gray's comforting smile, we have Michael's warm mom smile already. Too much soap opera!

On the plus side: nice intro story and president character. 👍

lets FLY.........plz stop that
stuwright0518 November 2021
Ok its lame, the effects arent, but it seems to be written by teens at the moment ,season 4 episode 01.... everythings just a bit too perfect in this star trek world, ep 04x01 and the thing they kept doing with showing the inside of the damaged ship "upside down", they must of done it 25 times , its just overdone, like most of the show, TRYING too hard. Then someone dies and theres sad music and sad faces, its SO formuleaic . There have been decent episodes, but the whole noding at each other ,then "lets fly" SO corny. Maybe the kids like it, as they hav'nt seen enough good scifi to compare it too.

These writers/directors have not improved at all, since the end of the last season!
rsvp32118 November 2021
I was anticipating for even an iota's worth of improvement in script or acting direction, to give me some hope that the show would have a future for me.

Negative! All the fans' criticism *especially about S3's finale!* was completely ignored.

That's it, moving on. I'll just wait for the next Star Trek series for any semblance to the Roddenberry vision, however long down the road that may be...

Like always, Discovery is trying to do too much
MovieMattic18 November 2021
Every episode is predictable. This one does have some moral aspect to accept that sometimes, no matter how hard we try, there are some things that are unavoidable. I think this series would be better if the writers narrowed their focus on one thing rather than many. In this episode you've got the establishment of the Starfleet Academy, Book going home, the new president, and the mysterious anomaly among other small details. It's just too much for the audience to take in.

Much better than I was expecting
oszajcakk18 November 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Third season was awful, so the expectation for fourth were set pretty low. Most of the episode was dedicated to show new dynamics in the federation and the fleet. The new, big danger is yet to be truly revealed. Ending was really strong. I was not expecting to see destruction of Books planet. It's little bit different from typical positive Star Trek stories. Interaction between Michael and President are going to be probably very important later in the future.

Its neither great nor terrible
jrzodda19 November 2021
Warning: Spoilers
This was a step down from last years opener. I give it 6 stars out of ten for a few reasons.

First the good:

The scene at the re-opened Star Fleet academy and the tribute to Star Trek Enterprise was cool. That was probably the best scene of the episode.

FINALLY somebody stands up to Michael Burnham and tells her truths that she really needs to hear. Especially since she is now Captain.

Next. She is CAPTAIN. One of the biggest mistakes this show made was to make the star of the show and hero NOT the Captain. So it always made her unlikeable. She never followers orders and is always right. That's a tedious combination.

The effects looked pretty good but the camera work was not all that great. This is my first real negative. It had just too much movement Bad Robot style. They could do to tone that down some. The effects people really overdid things with the fire on the bridge. They should know better by now too.

The early scene with the flying aliens was a little over the top. I don't know where these creatures learned how to fire weapons but their accuracy is beyond the pale. The whole thing was a bit silly.

Towards the end it looks like Discovery is on fire with massive bridge explosions (LOL) and yet they cut to a scene where Saru and the emo Kelpian have long dialogue. Hello?

So overall it was ok. The acting is fine in this show. The effects are at times very high quality. The writing, camera work, editing and pacing need work.

Come on guys get it right!

Terrible
treatchristian19 November 2021
Spend money on writing staff, not special effects... I don't understand why Star Trek discovery seems off. The chemistry of the characters is very awkward and not believable. I can't believe there's actually 4 seasons of this.

Trek is Back
bart-942-94494819 November 2021
People complaining about no straight white male characters ?

This is STAR TREK, to boldly go where no one has gone before!

Special effects were amazing and of course when the president reveils (go watch it) that new spacedock, emotions are coming.

Burnham and the crew had 3 seasons to grow towards eachother and they have, i forsee a great future for this show.

Don't let salty people put you off, this is Star Trek in 2021. Go watch it and enjoy and dream about the future.

Old guys who cannot get over their boycrush with Kirk, somewhat younger guys who cannot get over their boycrush with Picard or Riker... It doesn't matter what they think.

Gene would have been proud of Discovery!

Again?
jimmyishere-3774818 November 2021
A new threat. Again. Really? What is happening guys? What am I watching? That's not the Star Trek Discovery i fell in love with back in season 1. That's just space soap opera.

Here in Season 4 we have another universal threat to stop, but since we have commander Burnham who is the best and the strongest person alive in the universe we are safe.

Soundtrack is lacking. CGI is moderate but could be improved. The storyline surprisingly kicks off interestingly but it's not enough...

6.5.

Kobayashi Maru
Prismark1019 November 2021
Warning: Spoilers
The story behind the broadcast of the fourth season of Discovery had more excitement than portions of this episode.

At the last moment Star Trek Discovery was pulled from Netflix internationally.

The fourth season has the Federation being re-established and once again expanding. However the opening segment of Burnham dealing with a race in a clumsy manner was just too silly.

The episode established the existing crew and also gave time to a new character, Federation's new president Rillak who told Burnham some harsh truths about her recklessness.

The main arc for the fourth series seems to be some kind of a gravitational anomaly that is destroying planets. It might stop the Federation in its tracks.

For Discovery it is a low stakes opening episode. It looked great but it failed to wow me.

Great first episode!
tom99224 November 2021
What a great first episode, 52 minutes felt like 10 minutes! I really hope they will keep this strong start going throughout the entire season. The only thing that I still find annoying is that we still don't know the entire bridge crew, they are just there though they got a little bit more screentime in this first episode.

"Let's fly really?
wcparry219 November 2021
That idiotic line makes all the bad things about the show 100 times worse. This episode had so much potential but the underlying woke theme and other nonsense forced into it just made it horrible. The only reason it gets Seven Stars is because the actors at least tried to do their job, whoever wrote it or whatever team wrote ir needs to join the Chibnall, writing team from the latest iteration of Doctor Who. There's no excuse for how terrible this is writing wose, do better. I've seen more creativity come from 5th grade writing projects.

Flame Machines on the Bridge!
korpake19 November 2021
Such an incredible episode.

The Discovery bridge has two flame throwers that shoot out flames at regular intervals. So cool. That alone is worth 1 star.

Not sure why the heck they are there or what function they serve. Pretty much like every part of the plot and like every other character in the show other than Micky B who just saves everyone except when the writers have to make a point and explain it over to you multiple times.

Excessive yawning
gwmadrigal19 November 2021
This episode looks more like they missed to create a wow moment. If this season is starting so slow makes me doubt the season is going to worth the wait

When I compare this with the first episode of the first season there are some huge gaps this episode missed. There is no super villain. There are no. Big characters. At the end of the first episode, there is no rush go want to see the second episode.

I kind of liked it
ciuca1985-192-69644520 November 2021
I do not like what Discovery is. This new concept of Trek that puts together drama and adventure at a very high speed, with almost nothing of space travel, that just feels wrong when compared to the previous Star Trek series.

However, I still watch Discovery for what it is, because there is no other Star Trek series out there. Except for the 2 animations.

Now, this episode, judged by what Discovery is (for me), was good enough for me. Rebuilding Star Fleet, going on a mission, solving a mystery, even operating in a diplomatic mission (that is reminding me of Picard), remembering Archer (God, I miss Enterprise with its marvelous pace), worked quite fine.

For some reason, the newly elected President reminded my of the priestess from DS9. I found her acting good and her character lovable.

I still do not like Book. He acts in a fake way. He is made of wood. I cannot care for him. He does not express genuine emotions. Therefore, when, at the end of this episode, he acknowledged his planet was destroyed, I couldn't care less.

Though I enjoyed this episode, I find that it was a bad choice for a 1st episode of a new season. Why? Because it entered too quickly into action. I was hoping for a more relaxed pace, for more time for explanations, for some peace aboard Discovery, for connections between its members: nothing of those wishes of mine became true. Well, that is Discovery: less trek among stars, more fights and drama...Sadly...

One of the most traditional Star Trek episodes to date.
sbulgacs19 November 2021
I don't understand all the overly emotional complaints and 1 star reviews of the episode. It's actually more painful to see than season 3's monologing, crying and whispering.

After the total disappointment that was season 3 this episode is an improvement. The ensemble cast/crew were mainly represented and got screen time. Captain Burnham did not have the solutions to everything, people died. The focus being on the crew working together and solving said problems. Also no monologues or crying, HURRAY! I enjoyed it, however we all know how quickly Discovery can go off the rails, so my hopes aren't too high. But as a season opener, this was probably the best one so far. It actually felt like Star Trek.

CGI is not a story. Full of irrelevant feelings and empty smiles
ragnarhannes18 November 2021
Cringing over the vibe sent in this episode. This is badly written. Dialogue is just terrible and unconvincing. Bad script and way to many feelings again. Dont bother with this. Hard pass.

Great start for next adventure!
dpoland-7658919 November 2021
I wish the people rating this so low would simply stop watching and leave the rest of us in peace. Why continually make the efforts to lower the rating? I liked the start to this season after a frustrating season 3. Feels heavier and more loaded and I've got the snacks out for the journey.

Tolerable
sparklefish29 January 2022
I didn't like this episode much but I was able to watch the whole thing without turning it off, even when Michael started up again with the smug expressions, whispering, and head tilting. I don't even really remember what the plot was about-something about saving the universe and of course Michael is the only one who can do it. I wasn't sure I would even watch Season 4 but decided to give it a chance because I do like Paul, Hugh, Gray, Adira, and Saru.

The Wow factor clearly was missing....but
micjammusic19 November 2021
Warning: Spoilers
First of all, to all the doomsayers who turned after 5 minutes or less, your "criticisms" mean Jack s**t. If you can't be bothered to watch a whole episode, then please don't comment.

Secondly, will the writers please stop Burnham from being the hero all the time. Even Kirk and Picard delegated. This, "I'm the best person for job" is getting tiresome.

It would be interesting to give Tilly her own episode just to see if the actor can actually act.

It took til about halfway through before I realised the President of the Federation was half Cardassian....nice twist.

What could have been an exciting episode lacked the lustre I have come to expect from Star Trek. I've started watching TOS again and despite the cheesy special effects, it can still give Discovery a run for its money. I put this down to the fact that Shatner and Co. Could actually act.

Surprisingly, I actually enjoyed this episode more than IMDB, that is a rarity for this show or any show. It was an okay premiere and re-entry to the Discovery universe, but still this show is far from great.

Save on Writing
aaalllrrraaammm21 November 2021
Season 1 and 2 were great. In fact, in many ways season 2 was better than season 1. Season 3 took a dive in writing, and I thought season 4 would surely get back on track. No, it looks even worse than season 3, judging by the opening episode.

This season should be all about the struggle of rebuilding, the politics of it and cultural differences, where character development, dialogue and dynamics should be rich and strong - All with the spirit of classic Star Trek shining through. The new threat should be a backdrop, a setting in which the above plays out.

But no, what we seem to be getting is more of the season 3 dumbed down and superficial resemblance of Star Trek.

A strong start that gives me hope for the season. This show really needed someone like the president to at least lampshade some of the questionable things going on.

I liked how the ep was framed and what they focused on. Very much a self contained adventure and the crew working the problems.

What I do not like is the implication that there is going to be another galactic scale event they need to puzzle out and save/rebuild the galaxy from again.
