Rushed, but great!
carsonsalameh6 October 2021
It was a great finale, a few twists and turns but I loved the way they used the animation to tell the story. The send-off was good, and there IS a post-credits scene. However, like most of these episodes, it feels rushed. So far, almost every episode has made me feel this way (except 2, 4, and 8) so it's not surprising that this one did too, but jeez it really hurts this one above all.

A satisfying conclusion
writejyotisko6 October 2021
This episode could have used 10 more minutes of the team interacting with each other. But it was very fast paced and action packed, so it was visually pleasing.

PRETTY SATISFYING THOUGH A BIT DISAPPOINTING
alcantaraj-165946 October 2021
The 9th episode of What If is still a satisfying finale with great action scenes and some nice - but a bit rushed- pay offs for the season's cliffhangers. However, there isn't enough set-up and chemistry between the Guardians of the Multiverse to make the episode reach is potential, and Gamora didn't even get any episode for her to shine.

NOT YOU STARK!

Warning: Spoilers
I must admit this part had me laughing out loud. I'm one of the biggest Tony fans when it comes To MCU or even comics but I think it's fair enough to give the glory to another character, strange is my favourite second character and deserved a heroic end as well. The ep is perfect and what I had in my mind honestly. A suitable ending for season 1 and can't wait for season 2.

A Mini Avengers Movie!
mizbanazir6 October 2021
This was a very good ending to, and by far, the best episode of What if..? This particular episode brings together everything that we saw earlier in the show and we finally get compensated for some of the bad/abrupt endings of the previous episodes.

Every single thing about this episode was enjoyable. It was fast-paced (not rushed), genuinely funny and packed with surprises. The action sequences were quite thrilling and the animation, as always, was top notch.

I can go on about these things but the real winner of the episode is the multiversal crossover and the chemistry which was created between the characters within a span of just 30 minutes. It was like watching a mini avengers movie. We get to see some character interactions that we only wished we'd seen in the live-action MCU projects. And that was very interesting to watch.

The episode did have a small issue where just one of the characters, feels completely useless and was unnecessarily present. You will know who it is when you watch it. But it wasn't like that particular character's presence was holding the show back.

Not only was this episode a fitting conclusion to the entire show but it also sets us up for season 2 and probably for the future of MCU. This show turned out to be a lot more important than I had exptected it to be.

A Bit of a Disappointment
collincundiff6 October 2021
This episode was good, but not as great as it could've or should've been. Episode 8 was amazing, so it's unfortunate that this episode somewhat suffers from rough dialogue like some of the other mediocre episodes. But it's still a good conclusion nonetheless.

A fitting conclusion

A fitting conclusion to the series although it was a bit cliched when compared to the season finale of Loki.

Nonsensical conflict resolution but still entertaining
danielj-395226 October 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Its a fun episode with some great moments. However it does what marvel in general tends to do: it builds up an incredibly cool concept (an ultron with all the stones that can beat the watcher and break the multiverse) and then doesnt know how to satisfyingly beat that.

So you end up with a budget avengers team with only one member in it that should stand a ghost of a chance to survive longer than 5 seconds. You add a deus ex machina mechanic to beat the enemy (the stone crusher, tho props to them for not having it work). You downplay the power of the entity that could destroy galaxies with a bite. Having it beat around by basically human level fighters. And yes i know they were shielded by Strange Supreme but if his power is the only thing that allowed them to not-die-in-a-nanosecond then why even gather them in the first place? The zola solution also seems rather forced to me. Youre telling me an AI with the consciousness to see past the borders of his own universe and the power to reshape reality as he sees fit can be infiltrated and BEATEN by an analog AI from the 50s?

Also, Watcher, in an infinite number of universes to pick from you pick... star lord and captain carter, instead of an army of a billion Doctor Strange or something? So many powerful entities to call for help and you pick a team thats mostly street-level in power. Its almost as if some higher entity is forcing you to pick characters from earlier episodes... OMG i see it, the watcher above the watcher... the most powerful entity in the MCU... DISNEY!

Basically: the conflict resolution makes less than zero sense. However the animation is great, the action is great and im personally invested in many of these character which is somewhat enough i guess.

Entertaining but shallow
stani_cv8 October 2021
Warning: Spoilers
This season finale felt rushed for so many reasons. Someone told the writers they had to connect all episodes into one final and get the protagonists/antagonists from earlier in here to fight mega powerful Ultron, but there was hardly any time to bond or develop a plan for that final battle. In "infinity war" the avengers couldn't beat Thanos and they had so many battles together already. So you're trying to convince me that a bunch of misfits with no strategy whatsoever could defeat a being so powerful it threatens the whole multiverse?!? The only one who was of any threat was Strange. The rest were just filler. This time around there was no iron man, no hulk, no guardians, no antman, etc. In reality Ultron would have decimated them in seconds. The fighting and all that were exciting to watch but the rest is way too shallow to be a satisfying finale. 9 for animation, 2 for story makes for an average 5.5.

Riddled with plotholes
aarongnr6 October 2021
Warning: Spoilers
The amount of plotholes in this episode and their severity is actually absurd. It's as if they added them on purpose (for example Natasha controlling Loki through his armor, while we clearly know that doesn't work from The Avengers, but that's one of the insignificant ones).

1) Last episode I talked about how Infinity Stones shouldn't work outside of their universes, so people said "well that's not canon here", so now in this episode they make it a plotppint that kind of implies that they shouldn't work lol

2) If the Infinity Stones work, Ultron should easily be able to simply erase everyone instantly, no fight required. Been the same last episode, but this episode it's even more dumb because that's why he loses.

3) This stupid Zola stuff: That's just unrealistic af. I mean, so far Hawkeye's arrows could dock to a USB-like interface in The Avengers, which is fine I guess, but now they can just connect to everything. And even if we ignore that, how dumb is it that a Hydra AI from the 60s (or something) could overwhelm an AI like Ultron, developed by Tony Stark in 2014. Meh. Especially if you consider that fact that Zola isn't even an AI, but supposedly just his brain.

I could go on and on.

This episode had some really cool moments and I did like how they tied all of the episodes together, but overall, it's just a mediocre show and I sincerely hope we never see any of it in the live action MCU.

In case anyone wonders where Gamora's from...
isabellacheng6 October 2021
Warning: Spoilers
There's a missing episode where Iron Man drifted to Sakaar after New York. Production couldn't meet the schedule, so it will end up in Season 2. This Gamora almost offed Ultron, so I'm definitely looking forward to see her destroying Thanos.

Naturally this episode focuses on the boss fight, and it is spectacular! Though I would love to see the team interact more, and Doctor Strange is wayyy too OP in the fight. Though he probably deserve to be OP, given his backstory, and the "team".

Don't miss the mid-credit scene! Guess happy ending (in mid-credit) for our beloved Captains is, in itself, a Nexus being.

Not you, Stark!
mhorrighan6 October 2021
Dude, after killing him half of the episodes, you could have given him some slack. On the other hand, it's nice to see some of the other characters involved with saving the multiverse.

I especially enjoyed Strange showing off some of the magic he literally ingested previously. Thor was screaming a lot which was funny but one would think after being friends with his brother from another mother he should be more immune against all kinds of magic shenanigans and not that easy to shock. Gamora was a bit underused, only there to explain her ultimately useless whatchamacallit.

All in all a fun episode, could have used some more screen time and some more plot, but all around a good finale.

Season One Review
southdavid7 October 2021
The genius of Marvel productions has, for the last few years, been giving you not just what you want, but what you didn't even know you wanted. I was prepared for "What If" to be what they said it was, a series of unconnected stories showing alternate takes on the characters and utilising much of the roster of talent we've seen in the MCU. That they've then provided more besides, a season arc and a resolution, is a cherry on top of an already impressive cake.

Unable to stand idly by anymore, The Watcher (Jeffrey Wright) collects a team of heroes and villains from the previous episodes to make a stand against Ultra-Vision (Ross Marquand) and save the multiverse. His team, consisting of Doctor Strange Supreme (Benedict Cumberbatch), Starlord T'Challa (Chadwick Boseman), Captain Carter (Hayley Atwell), Gamora (Cynthia Kaye McWilliams), King Killmonger (Michael B Jordan) and Party Thor (Chris Hemsworth) attempt to coexist, in a world they barely understand and against a foe who seems to hold all the cards.

I feel like I keep saying this, but the show looks amazing. The battle against Ultra Vision, which cribs from the fights against Thanos in both Endgame and Infinity War, is a joy to behold. I'm not sure exactly why, the writing maybe, but this performance of Captain Carter worked a lot more for me than her individual episode did and there are strong returns for Hemsworth and Cumberbatch as well as a final emotional performance from Chadwick Boseman.

It's the writing though that is the most impressive, tying up what felt like loose ends from other episodes of the show, making a use out of the two episodes that this one doesn't lift a character from, the resurrection of Doctor Strange and the punishment for Killmonger. Brilliant stuff. Shame we didn't get a chance to meet this Gamora before, as her episode was cut (or perhaps shunted to season two) but still truly tremendous stuff and I can't wait to see if they can top it next time out.

Loki put you up to this joke!
ha77y73ad976 October 2021
Warning: Spoilers
From the opening to the end this was a good sign off to the series. Tying off the lose ends that we never thought we'd know the end of. Picking each member out to help defeat Ultron the Watcher has finally taken mortal form on each of the dimension that have been shown previously. Apart from 1? Which seems to have become surpluses to requirements from the impact of Covid, hopefully get to see this in season 2!

Getting into the story, which essentially is the battle of the multiverses the best details I loved through out this is is the protection spells. They've been spoken about in MCU live action but wouldn't these be awesome to be shown more. Each character had their own enchanted suit of golden magic! When the team is assembled this really did play heavy on comic law where the Sanctum Sanctorum lay outside of any distinguishable reality. Calls to both Justice League Dark and the Strange Tales stories of old. When dimension jumping its awesome to see how they use mirrors to depict the change! Blue cloud for the Space stone and now Mirrors for dimension

To what actually happens in the fight, there will be no spoilers on the outcomes but some notable moments first of which is Captain carter not able to lift Mjölnir, has she not faced the change that allows her to be worthy of the hammer? Albeit limited lines this was the final moment for Chadwick Boseman and i hope this is immortalized but still his best moments are in Civil War, hands down! As the tide of the battle is changing we get to see our Zombies back to cause "chaos". It wouldnt be a marvel movie without a circling avengers style shot showing each ready for the next phase of battle! And with the return to Ultrons prime dimension the ending does allow for an original concept design from CA:Winter Solider to be fulfilled, Zola original design from the comics with the face in chest after taking over Visions body.

The only 2 issues with the whole episode and what could be set up going forward is that any one can wield the stones now, yes this happened in GOTG but there were 5 in the end. This was always shown to be an exceptional being can held all 6 stones but this seems to have been put aside that anyone with a vessel can held the power of the stones. The only other issue again has been brought up before is that in Loki any stone outside its reality is useless so how can there be 2 time stones in 1 reality allowing both to work against each other?

Overall this was a fitting ending to the stories with many of them returning to the moment they left in full Endgame style. With one in particular actually giving me goosebumps! Just to say mid credit scene season 2 awaits.

What if... we ask an intriguing question and maybe for once execute it well?
miriam-seraia2 March 2022
Warning: Spoilers
So we continue where we left off in the previous episode, with Ultron gaining multidimensional powers of interference and whatnot, except the Watcher decides to intervene in order to save the multiverse.

I was on the edge f my seat with some scenes. Except, if you have access to anyone across the multiverse to help why the hell wouldn't you enlist a sane Wanda who has access to her full powers? Like pick the one who has her family to lose in this war and I'm sure she'll be the most help. Why not get mature Thor to come in? An Eternal? So many options...

Anyway, much better than the majority of episodes.

Ok, let's be honest...
wildbyzon10 October 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Ok, let's be honest, there is no script in this episode. There are only great battle scenes with an after credit scene that could mean something for the MCU, maybe?

The Marvel Multiverse laws are destroyed, we already know that from the previous episode.

Ultron killed immediately Thanos who had 4 infinity stones, with only one stone.

But now that he has 5 stones, he is destroyed by a living virus who had survived in an abandoned and isolated computer.

The infinity stones could not repel such a threat...

It looks like that the more infinity stones you have, the weaker you become...

What If... The Watcher Broke His Oath?
Prismark1025 January 2022
What If... came across as a disparate and stand alone set of episodes. It worked fine in the What If... scenarios.

In the last two episodes, it looked that there was an arc. It is more obvious in the final episode.

The Watcher assembles his own team together. They appeared in past episodes and they take on Ultron.

The logical flaws have to be overlooked. If Ultron is so powerful that he can destroy whole galaxies in a thought so he could do the same here.

What is presented is an action packed episode that works well in the animation format.

Not complete crap, just too many damn plot holes and issues
arandomperson-7107 October 2021
Warning: Spoilers
So, let's go over the flaws, strengths, and then final verdict as I usually do

  • Strengths

  • The humor is fine. Marvel doesn't tend to have to many issues with humor(except the Black Widow movie)
  • Seeing them use every character from the previous episode was interesting
  • The Zola payoff was consistent
  • The animation was good

Flaws

  • Why the hell did they bring in Killmonger? This dude is a proven murderer, and you trust him? (Evidenced as he betrayed them)
  • How can Killmonger, a human, weird all 6 stones with ease when it nearly killed Hulk?

  • Remember when Ultron blew up a universe with a single bite? Why can't he do that here? He tanked hits from the Watcher, but can't survive a punch from Captain Carter?

  • of all the people Uatu chose, he chose Captain Carter, Party Thor, Gamora with a big sword, T'challa Star Lord, and Killmonger? Strange makes sense, Nat makes sense, but these other guys are borderline useless. Where's Captain Marvel, who's a Bloody Mary Sue? She'd be useful here.

  • why doesn't the Watcher help? Couldn't he have helped fight too?

  • Why did they think Zombies would work on a robot? They give you like ten seconds, and Wanda's actual form might be useful.

  • Why is Gamora in this episode? She was supposed to have an episode, but it feels rushed.

  • Loki made it clear Infinity Stones don't work outside of their reality, but hey, screw consistency.

  • Why didn't Ultron ask help from his army of robots? Moron

Final Verdict

The episode is supposed to be about fighting Ultron, and stopping him. But it just feels underwhelming, and after the absolute menace Ultron was in the last episode, in this one Thanos was more impressive. This show I think suffers from a lack of runtime. It wants us to connect to these characters, but it doesn't last long enough to fully flesh it out. Other episodes have suffered from weird changes that don't make sense at all, and major inconsistencies.

I have seen people giving reviews about how my expectations were too high. Why are you blaming the audience for being invested in a story, and hoping for good stuff, and then it doesn't pay off meaningfully? People want more, and that's the issue with Marvel. They churn out so much stuff so quickly, and it works at getting money. But at this point it's quantity over quality. Marvel doesn't flesh out their ideas, and rush, and that is how you get things like What If? Loki, Black Widow, Fatws, and WandaVision. I think there is good ideas, the MCU just isn't thinking it through enough to get them to work. Overall, What If had an interesting premise, but at the end of the day, it falls flat on it's face.

And here we go again...
anuj-181996 October 2021
Warning: Spoilers
So far only two What if episodes have impressed me and this is not one of them. The overly cheesy lines and one-liner attempts were pathetic. And the episode is so dumb, we see Ultron eating galaxies in the previous episode and here Ultron is struggling to break Doctor Strange's charm.

And why didn't Ultron create ultron robot minions to fight with the rest? Why was Ultron running to grab the Soul stone when he can bend matter to his will. How the heck blows from Natasha and Carter even affecting him considering that he kicked The Watcher's butt at his full prime?

How the heck Hawkeye's arrow act as an USB stick to any surface?

Don't get me started with the Zola Algorithm plot armour. How the hell an A. I that's from 1960s can overpower an A. I that was created recently that expanded his consciousness as he evolved further using the powers of the infinity stones?

This Was Epic
robbysheilds6 October 2021
Warning: Spoilers
The Season 1 Finale is here, and it brought a lot of epicness with it! The characters from the previous episodes along with an extra one that we'll get to in a bit join forces to stop Ultron from destroying the multiverse.

First, I like the team-up here, and all the characters work well off each other. It was a nice way to make every episode feel important in a way.

Second, nobody's been nerfed here. Supreme Strange is still really powerful, and it shows in the battle. Infinitron (Ultron with all Infinity Stones) is still a really big threat, and every character is really powerful!

Third, the animation is fantastic! The characters move really smoothly, and the 2D animation blends really well with the 3D animation, and it all makes the episode look so great!

Fourth, the pacing is great! The episode was 30 minutes long if you don't count the intro and end credits, and yet, I barely noticed! The episode's pace is fast, but it isn't so fast that it feels like the episode was on fast-forward.

Fifth, the humor is pretty good, and it's integrated into the episode in a way that doesn't distract from the action itself. And it doesn't take away from the seriousness of it all. At least for the most part.

My only problem is with Thor in this episode. It's Party Thor, and whenever he talks, it kinda takes you out of the action to make you think, "Why did he say that?" But it's not that big of a deal, as this problem only happens a few times in the beginning. The rest of the time, he's still Party Thor, but the episode doesn't grind to a halt to have a joke happen. He just says a party thing, he does a thing, and that's it.

This is a really great season finale, and a really great episode that doesn't disappoint. But there is one thing that didn't get answered. What happened with Gamora? My theory is that the Gamora episode was supposed to be the 9th episode, and this episode was gonna be the 10th one, but then COVID happened, meaning they had to put an episode from this season into Season 2, meaning we have that. I can't wait for Season 2, because I'm really curious to see what happened with Gamora and Stark. See you in Season 2 to explore 9 more of the infinite possibilities of the multiverse!
