Crossing into gimmicky territory
teiixeiral12 October 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Don't get me wrong, this episode is very well written, especially Jamie's monologue, but it's becoming gimmicky. The same plot realization that Mrs. Grose underwent last episode is happening to Flora. Whatever is happening with Henry is requiring one to suspend their disbelief to epic proportions.

Is everyone in this show ghost living in perpetuity at all times like Dr. Manhattan?

MathSSSSSSSS

Maths. Maths!! How difficult is it for an American writer to know that the English don't say Math. Great episode but really frustrating.

S1.E6 - Henry and his Demons [9/10]
panagiotis199324 April 2024
Warning: Spoilers
(S1. E6) My Live Reaction / Review for The Haunting of Bly Manor Season 1 Episode 6 ''The Jolly Corner''. The previous episode was good and I gave it a rating of 9/10. Let's see if this one is better or worse. This episode is one hour long? Nice! Was miss Wingrave cheating on her husband? That's awful. All this back and forth in time is sometimes confusing, you cant understand if its in the past or present. Henry sees the ghost of himself? That's weird. How did the Wingraves die? I want more details. Jamie had a very sad childhood, her story is really interesting though. So Flora is Henry's kid? That's disturbing. The monologue from Dominic was really intense. Henry got what he deserved. Henry's imagination is wild. I don't even feel bad for him, he deserves the suffering. Flora is talking to the ghost like its a friend, its kinda funny and cute. What was that insane ending, did Miles hit Dani on the head? Overall this episode was good and I enjoyed it. My rating is 9/10.

Maths

Warning: Spoilers
I'm gonna take majority vote here and say I liked it.

I do agree that Henry's alter ego smiling all the time is funnier than it is scary. Personal preference from me I guess. I don't think smiling is scary at all. Aside from that, I liked seeing a haunted Henry. It was nicely executed, just wish he hadn't tried to be so scary with a smile is all.

Jamie's dialogue was pretty well acted, but it is pretty expositiony. Why not give her an origin episode? It worked in Hill House, and it has even worked here with Hannah and Dani. Why not just do one more episode about her and/or Owen?

Still liked the writing in this episode though. The acting is all very, very good, and I personally find the show pretty unsettling at this point of not really all that scary.

Scriptwriters need to step their game up.
Samthesham6711 October 2020
This series is supposed to be based in England and the characters are supposed to be English, apart from the lead of course. The script writers need to understand the English way of speaking if they want some sort of reality. Dominic talks about "doing the math" in this episode, well, English people don't say that, they say "doing the maths" or "doing the sums". There have been a couple of these little mistakes and, I really don't want to sound pedantic, but they bug me a little because it loses reality.

Gotta Keep Things Propa BOOORING, HAVEN'T WE???
wandernn1-81-68327421 October 2020
Warning: Spoilers
So we begin here with WINGRAVE. And how he dedicated himself entirely to his WORK.

And oh dear Dani hitting on Jamie, to get a BOORING OLD DRINK IN A BOORING OLD PUB, and SEE WHERE THAT TAKES US????

And then Stopping poor FLORA wandering around outside.......

Now I'm really not sure what's going on with Henry Wingrave....

He's seeing a double of himself???

Really this episode seems pretty bland.....

Really don't care for the Dani /Jamie relationship that's building...

Ruh Roh, then Dani finds Rebecca ghost in Flora's room!! And then there is Peter also!!

And then oh noes!!!! Dani gets bonked on the head!!!

+1 Star for the ending of the Ep.

Too many slips
mattski200013 November 2020
A compelling series which draws you deeper and deeper every episode. The real horror is our own pasts.

However, as others have already said, as a viewer in the UK, I found myself jarringly taken out of the drama by consistent errors in British English. Math not maths, 'enn-velope' not 'on-velope', one brother having an upper class accent, the other Estuary English. (I could probably also pick holes in Henry's shirt tailoring, but I can live with that).

Can't imagine it would take much to have got this sorted.

Episode 6

Warning: Spoilers
I was wondering when they would address Henry, but it feels like they dragged their feet too much on this. It was also not clear whether he was dead or it was his guilt we were seeing.

Henry's alter-ego is more funny than scary. Laugh out loud every time he made the clown face.

Terrible, bad, awful

Why did I keep on watching the show after episode 5?

Honestly, whatever happened to this show is just horrendous. Even Victoria Pedretti looks like an average actress. It all looks like your average sitcom but with an after-lunch soap opera twist. You can even tell that the tree leaves are fake. I don't get anything of what is going on by the way, so out of context, so lazy, so poorly written. The characters don't have any depth, as the writers/creators/directors. Awful.

A decent middle episode.
Sleepin_Dragon16 August 2022
The house readies itself for Flora's birthday, and a party is planned, Flora however is stuck in the past, Dani gets a little closer to Jamie.

Perhaps this was my least favourite episode so far, I still enjoyed it, I still liked the way that the pieces of the jigsaw puzzle were all starting to knit together, for me this one was a little too slow. The previous episode set the bar so high.

A few little things I've spotted, I think you can tell from the visuals that it's not Britain. The word math is used, as it's supposed to be set in England, no Brits use the singular form, it's always maths.

The scene between Dani and Jamie was well acted for the most part, I didn't particularly like some of the dialogue used.

Some good scenes, some slow ones. I did enjoy the conversation surrounding the revelation of the affair, and as ever the scenes with Flora were so interesting.

Henry, I'm not too sure about him, I'm not fully sure that some of the quirks worked all that well.

Underwhelming, but solid, 6/10.

IT'S A GOOD EPISODE BUT A LITTLE LONG...
hugojordan23 November 2020
A good episode but it suffers from its length, however we learn a lot of revelation! but it's true that the episode is not scary ... it's a shame, it will have awakened the public a little!

Not his best work.
Zett761 May 2024
I put the whole show in between my favorite work of Mike Flanagan, which is, of course, that show about that other house, and my least favorite show of Mr. Flanagan, which is that show on that island.

This episode is quite on the island show side.

His best qualities are the weaponization of subtlety, creating constant tension and/or mystery. Did I really see that? What just happened? Many of the best scenes he created not only don't need many words, they work that well because of the lack of words.

His worst side is his faible for monologues, which can go on for ten minutes or more. Sometimes philosophical speeches, sometimes huge exposition dumps - most times something in between.

That's why I got bored on that island, way more than once. After this episode, especially after that scene in the woods, I felt the very same.

Uneven but mostly positive episode
85122215 January 2022
Greetings Lithuania.

6th episode was a bit draggy and to long. Story coming more and more together, yet it's a bit uneven and these more mystery then emotions. One revelations comes and one new mystery appears. But good production values, good acting and still involving story keep me going to see next episode. Uneven but mostly positive series so far.

Flirting with incoherence and bad maths.
smegma2312 October 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Absolutely agree that supposed Brits talking about "the math" is jarring; as is Mr. Thomas's pronunciation of "enn-velope". But more troubling is the inconsistent, silly logic surrounding ghostly possession and mediation of "tucked away" memory-dreams... dude, just use flashbacks.

I can't help thinking this "Haunting of..." thing is just a slightly less lurid AHS. It seems to have a similarly kitchen sink approach. If that's what all TV horror is going to be based on from now on, I'ma say a prayer to St. Stephen (King) and just snuff it.

Cant hire decent writers apparently
jimmietee21 March 2021
Imagine the writer room: OK. They started with a decent short story, they ripped off elements of other stories for various episodes. Then they peppered it with as many modern tropes as they could. I get they save a ton of money when they don't have to use any creativity in the writers room.

But for them to decide they would skip all scary elements in favor of long and tiring dialogues where the actors go on and on and on and on long after any point is made simply to fill an hour. That is unforgivable. I sincerely hope to never watch any show these hacks have written in the future.

I'm done
BetaMaxine30 August 2022
This is the episode that my spouse and I finally gave up on this series. Mike Flanagan's shows need some editing, the characters give these long boring monologues that don't really advance the story. Seriously, Bly Manor could have been wrapped up in about half as many episodes. It's not a bad show but I figured out much of the characters long before the show finally got around to slowly revealing the surprise. We watched Midnight Mass recently, also by Mike Flanagan, and while we made it all the way through to the end it suffered from the same problems. Too long and way too many long, boring monologues.
