Season One Review
southdavid1 July 2020
I'm going to review this as the first season of an ongoing show, rather than a single series itself, if that changes I'll repost the review in the main page. I'm not convinced that there will ever be any more, though particularly with the global pandemic in real life likely to affect TV Production for the next few years.

Unbeknownst to the participants and crew of "Olympus", Brazil's Big Brother-esque reality TV show, Sao Paulo is being slowly overrun by a zombie apocalypse. Production assistant Nina (Ana Hartmann) is the first to discover the outbreak, and battles her way into the relative security of the main house, but is met by scepticism by the housemates, who assume it's part of a task. The shows bullying, self-serving director, Brandao (Guilherme Weber) also gets into the house alongside compelling evidence that the problem is real.

A few of the reviewers seem to have mistaken the show as a rip off of "Dead Set", Charlie Brooker's Zombie apocalypse in the "Big Brother" house series of a few years ago. It's a remake/continuation - and Brooker is credited as an executive producer and "Dead Set" is mentioned in the opening credits? It's not a straight shot-for-shot remake but the first half of the series is very similar in terms of plot and tone though, with Brandao and Nina being akin to their counterparts in "Dead Set". Woven through those episodes though is a second story about the shows former creative talent and her son who plan to cross the city and get into the house, knowing that it has supplies, communication options, clean water and solar panels. This storyline eventually takes over and forms the brand new second half of the series.

I watched the show with subtitles and the original dialogue and I never had any issues following along with what was happening, who was speaking or missing any of the jokes. Though, to be fair, much of the humour is slapstick, or grossout stuff revolving around the many horrific deaths that take up the show. There is a lot of gore on display, almost all of it practical effects and it looks comparable with anything you'd see in a similarly themed show. I'm surprised at the series relatively low rating on IMDB at the moment (just 5.4) as although it's not particularly original, especially in our heavily zombiefied popular culture sphere, I thought it was a well-made and enjoyable series - that doesn't demand a lot of your time.
