extremely underrated.
akomapochuff19 August 2020
Sigh. I wonder why this show is so underrated. Maybe its lacking in surface appeal, or what I love most about it is not what people often appreciate most.. regardless..

I had to review this show after the sixth episode though I thought to do it before hand. This show has an exceptionally rich story imo. There are so many co-relations with our world, with the ways things are, with the future. I am not going to spoil it but if you love Philosophy, Religion or Mythology you might really be able to appreciate it. Give it two episodes. Its also very heart warming and inspiring. I am very grateful for everyone who brought this work about.

Good but nothing to write home about

Deca-Dence took the sci-fi genre by storm. What started out as a generic opening of the first episode quickly turned itself around after the big revelation. Such a reveal gave Deca-Dence more of an identity, an IT factor that defines this show's story and characters. This isn't a typical sci-fi show that you may get used to and over time, you'll come to appreciate what Deca-Dence really is. And truth to be told, I welcome our alien overlords.

Very good anime show of 2020
Irishchatter24 September 2020
Well I would have never expected to watch an anime thats about Cartoon-Network style avatars (known as gears) trying to fight CGI monsters partnering with the humans (known as bugs). To be quite honest with you and out of stupidity, the amount of times they mention Deca Dence in this, I still haven't a bloomin clue what Deca Dence is. I suppose my monkey brain self just admired so much of the art and the fighting scenes out put into this that you'll immediately get lost in a good way lol...

Seriously the teamwork with Natsume and Kaburagi were just so wholesome man! I just like Natsumes confident attitude like she does them fights good! Likewise with Kabu, for a cute little robot avatar, he just surprises you on how clever he is! However I think the best character in this is Jill. She definitely is best girl with her sly clever attitude when she's helping out with Kabu. The actress Michiyo Murase did a phenomenal job voicing her!

Yeah if you like you're mad max themed and monsterish type of story, look no further and watch this anime! It's also by the director who did the fantastic Mob Psycho 100😁😁

Its a good series if you can take the story build up
kennyT-1998711 January 2022
This anime is quite good, there are a few pointers though.

If you like mecha, drama, action, monsters then this anime will be good for you to watch. Its only after watching all episodes the story made sense to me.

It would have been nice to bring some depth in to the cyborgs color scheme though.

I like how the story merged both sides together at the end but I have to admit it was quite heavy to digest staying on track.

A season 2 wont have this problem I suppose and could bring about some interesting plots to this anime. I rate the anime a 7, if they do make another season then my rating could go up.

I smell potential here

Why is this series everyone's punching bag this year? People are judging the series right from the trailer. Many are calling it generic, attack on Titan copy failure, cliche, and very disappointing terms. This series is infact one of the most generic we've longed in for a while. I don't want to spoil anything but at the first episode, the plot goes by the ; humanity is pushed to the brink by dangerous giant creatures as the destiny of humanity fall in the hands of a special trained group of humans. To be frank, Darling in the Franxxx, Evangelion, Attack on Titan, to mention a few have all used a similar formula. But in the case of the 'real' and actual plot of Deca Dence, this series is one of a kind with a unique story that marks the peculiarity of the show from being an attack on Titan clone. Right from the 2nd episode, a major plot twist will totally make you take this anime very seriously. Everything you believed about the plot is not actually whole or even true. I heard this anime doesn't have a source material, no wonder there isn't a strong fan base to counter the bias towards this anime. In terms of the characters, this anime offers non cliche anime characters you usually see in shuonen titles. Some characters may be generic at first sight but as the plot progresses, you begin to see a whole 3 dimensional figure of the characters. I believe this anime can really hit in and make a hit against the odds. Just give the show a chance past the first three or episodes.

Deca-dence is telling me a story of a dystopian future full of interesting characters. A story that I found to be captivating and fresh with some unexpected twists.

Anime that does everything right
urthpainter25 May 2022
Deca Dence is a combination of many things - post apocalyptic battle for survival to begin with... however it's best to just watch that 2nd episode to begin to wrap ones mind around what is actually going on. The world building is very complicated, but the story itself is revealed in a pretty straight forward way - to the point that fans of anime will settle in quickly. However, if this was the first anime someone ever watched? I think it could be truly profound, just due to the radical nature of content compared to the average TV show.

Id say Deca-Dence is built first on entertainment. Characters are iconic and fun. Action sequences are frequent and well presented. Drama occurs when it needs to, and unfolds in logical ways that fit character motivations.

I really like the opening theme, to the point I watched it every time. Credit song is also memorable. All the audio is solid, from voice acting to general soundtrack.

The 12 episode run is pretty spare - with very little filler/flashback. Even when that does happen, It works so well with what is happening in the story, I completely approve. I got the feeling that the creators were trying to squeeze everything in, as opposed to extending moments - and that is my type of anime! I want dense content devoid of fluff.

A lot of the technology descriptions and anime style has a simplified look that some may not appreciate. I'd loved it myself - and with a little jump of creative logic, these stylistic choices could be viewed as symbolic gestures that get to the heart of character and story first - as opposed to dwelling in technical description. It is an anime after all! And dialing back production choices for content related reasons... to me? Is a sophisticated approach to story telling.

There are some questions that if asked, really don't have meaningful answers - most of this would be regarding the crazy hierarchy the characters exist within, and how these 'levels' of individuals interact. But? That is really only on analysis - the nature of how everything unfolds? Follows consistent pacing that kinda prevented this viewer from going down those mental paths.

Who would like Deca-Dence? Most general fans of anime, I suspect. Otherwise, fans of large scale action sets involving monsters fought by teams of people. Fans of movies like the Matrix or other cyberpunk literature: early William Gibson for instance. And fans of action movies, like the Professional or the Enforcer, that have strong mentor/student relationships along with all the action sets.

All time, top 5 anime? I don't think so, but I wouldn't debate someone who did. While I don't think it is in the same class of a Steins;Gate, Deathnote, Cowboy Bebop, Neon Genesis or Code Gaess - I would put it damn near in that same league. There are all time anime that I like Deca-Dence way more that (like Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood or Escape from Titan). I would never try to tell anyone it is better than those epic experiences, I just personally like Deca-Dence better, because I think it's run is more fun and entertaining.

Deca-Dence is an elegant 12 episode run, where every episode is good. I'll likely kinda fit it in with other anime like that: Hinamatsuri, D-Frag, Juuni Taisan - as a few other examples of single season anime that are good all the way through.

Misleading first episode
mossikukulas-213143 January 2021
When I saw the trailer I said great. When I watching the first episode there were subtle alarm bells ringing, about how this 'ecosystem' works but I said hey, it's anime there'll be some convoluted explanation for it so that'll be fine!

When the first episode ended I said what the.. Then when the second episode started and I realised what was going on I turned it off and that's it from me.

This is obviously for 10 year olds so I'll pass. Such a shame.. if the show was based around the first episode and had some other plot twist (I don't know maybe the aliens aren't bad? or something like that I think it would have been great..)

A pass from me.

The art style and story is amazing, the characters are good if not a little 2 dimensional, and the ending is great. 10/10.

A good show
masonfewel4 June 2021
If you are looking for a show that you know you will like, this is probably the one. You won't love it, but you will probably like it. It has a lot of the tropes from other anime and movies (it's basically just a bunch of different concepts from different movies, shows, and games), but put together it's cool, even if there are some weird contrast between styles that don't really work. The action is very reminiscent of attack on Titan, and it has the same cool vibe to it, which I really enjoyed. The weird cyborg stuff kind of threw me off at first, but I grew to accept it as a thing that is in this universe. I wish they weren't as cartoonish though, it makes the show feel a little less genuine to me. Honestly I don't really have much to say about this show compared to others, but I guess I'll just say that I liked it and you probably will too.

Such a great start!
pederhastrup14 October 2020
The first episode is amazing! Its beautiful, fast past and clearly took all the best things from Attack on Titan! The episode 2. It's a completely other show. Very slow. The characters you know from ep. 1 does not matter, but now has badly designed aliens clearly made for small kids.
