It was Great till it wasn't
starlit-35 November 2022
It started out really good then became disappointing, a few twists brought it back to life, but then some poor acting on the lesser actors made it goofy.. It started to turn into Mayberry with murders. It seemed like a serious show that turned into a side gig comedy. The stunts were of poor quality and laughable. The ending for me was totally lame, uneventful and anti-climactic. It could have been a really great movie and Morgan Freeman & Cole Hauser did well. I hope that someone remakes this movie using better writers than these. So glad I didn't pay theatre prices to see this unexceptional film.

Average - just to kill time
mosquitocyn16 November 2022
I read the bad reviews only after I started watching the movie but decided to continue with it. It was not all that bad - the development of the story and acting was ok for me to continue on with some forwarding. Then halfway through the series of murders became an unbelievable roller coaster of events. It was a surprising turn of events but felt artificially induced to keep the story interesting. The ending was really hurried and a turn off and not well thought through. Kind of one of those lazy endings to quickly wrap things up. All in all not too bad a movie to watch with some interesting characters just to kill time.

A one-time watchable B film that gets sloppy towards the end.
Top_Dawg_Critic1 January 2023
You can tell this was a newb filmmaker entry, and there's nothing wrong with that, because they have to start somewhere. However, rookie mistakes aside, it showed promise, but in the third act the writing became lazy and sloppy. It started off plausible, and as the twists started, it became a little more exciting, but then it was one plot hole after another, and then the laughable shake your head moments took away from the decent set-up. The casting and performances were good enough - especially considering the novice cast directing, and you know most of this film's low budget went to Morgan Freeman. The cinematography was decent as was the score. Had the writing been more cohesive and smarter after the mid-way mark, I would've easily given this a 7/10.

It started getting bad, then it didn't stop
mrmail-5659313 November 2022
Why Morgan Freeman put his name to this, I will never know. He was barely in it but when he was, there was a distinct lack of effort.

It was doing ok but as soon as it started to get bad, it went downhill fast. From half way through, it felt like something that lost investment and interest from those producing it, and those acting it. Almost like from half way, they'd all got a bit fed up and decided to hurry it along so they could go and get on with their day jobs.

Some of the acting was awful. The character who worked in the kitchen, had me checking online to see if it was a comedy. His acting was dire and he felt like a children's film baddie. I couldn't bring myself to watch the last 10 minutes.

Director says...
jazzbelle195320 November 2022
Do the worst acting ever in your careers or the worst acting you have ever seen any other actor do. I ended up laughing at it & myself for spending $7 on it. It started off slow using about every cliche you have ever heard. It look like it was a movie made in the 1950s. Lucky for my husband he fell asleep 5 minutes in. Please save yourself & your $7. If you watch it, you will be kicking yourself for it. Really great actors that must have been desperate for money. I can't even imagine a person watching this movie & then saying. "It was so great, I had to watch it twice". I am usually better at picking movies than this.

B-class movie, an OK "whodunit" watch
wsgddvmd18 February 2024
I watched it on a plane where I didn't have access to IMDB, otherwise I'd probably wouldn't. But I liked the trailer. This a classic B class cinema with beginner actors learning the ropes on how to deliver their lines (apart for Freeman). I refuse to believe majority of staff had any acting experience. The dialogs are cliche and spoken without conviction. It reminded me the "straight to "VHS" 1990 movies at times. But I feel the actors were let down by both the writer and director who allowed for the likes of "you don't mess with old Berta" being said over and over. It's hilariously bad at times.

However - criticism aside, I liked the fast pace and the guesswork what's gonna happen next. It was a bit of "Knives Out" style with unveiling mystery. If you're looking for an easy to follow thriller with hot actress and twists, go for it. It now makes me want to shoot a movie myself, clearly you don't need any acting or directing abilities whatsoever if you have the funding from the studio.

Cole Hauser's toupee
Virtual_Herd20 March 2023
Lazy effort to go with predictable and bad dialog. Morgan Freeman is simply too old to play the same character he has been playing for 40 years at this point in his career. The overall premise looks promising but it tries really hard to be serious while everyone is phoning it in. Jaimee Alexander is at least beautiful to look at but there is not enough of her in this to make it worth watching. I wanted to like this but it just goes from bad to worse to why would they waste time and money on this? I could literally see toupee glue in one of the early scenes where Cole Hauser is driving. I recommend avoiding this movie.

Can't Get That Time Back
joshlipton-4168727 December 2022
Cole Hauser and Morgan Freeman are both talented actors who should have run from this movie. Their performances are fine, but good lord. The writing starts off okay (at best) but becomes an absolute farce by the end. It's as though a capable writer began a screenplay and then died halfway through, only to have a drunk junior high student finish it.

If you make the mistake of watching this, you will be grateful when a murder happens. It terminates a performance that might have been decent (per the writing), but was very much not decent in reality.

I've rarely watched a movie where I was rooting for the entire cast to be killed just so it would end.

Solid Entertainment!
TheJonesBones20 December 2022
So, I clicked on this one because I'm a fan of Cole Hauser and his dad, Wings (Firebase Gloria rocks!). I am not disappointed.

First, it's a whodunnit and why kinda of show. You think it's all too obvious. So, you think you know but then the plot twists and you don't know a thing until more bodies drop and then... then you finally know. That last bit is importan because I want to get the why of a thing when I enjoy a story.

And I really enjoyed this one. Although I expected Morgan Freeman and Cole Hauser to be the central focus of everything, I was pleasantly surprised by the distribution of air-time. That's why this one will grab you by your short and curlies because I promise - cross my heart - that you will NOT anticipate each turn of the plot.

I think you should pop some corn, roast some dogs, pour a drink and then kick back, relax and enjoy. You WILL be entertained!

The Minute You Wake Up....
Taco_Sanchez22 September 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Watching a very bad movie would be a more appropriate title for this flick. It guess it had potential the first five minutes or so. Cole Hauser is Russ Potter, a stock broker who has given many of the small town residents bad advice regarding a potential corporate merger, causing them to lose money. Even the sheriff, Morgan Freeman, is mad at him but he finds some comfort in the local waitress who happens to be his next door neighbor Delaine played by Jaimie Alexander. Russ gets a series of threatening phone calls...only to have Delaine's father get murdered. It's suggested that Russ was the real target but we quickly learn that it was in fact a scheme cooked up by Delaine, using the dimwitted fry cook Lucius to kill her father in order to collect the insurance money. Of course, Lucius himself owes $5,000 to another shady character who has a penchant for cutting off digits, which causes Delaine to poison him, only to get them after her....meanwhile Morgan Freeman, like any wise and crusty ole sheriff, invites Russ over for a steak dinner just to let him know that he's figured out Lucius is the killer and Delaine is involved....only for Russ to kill him (leaving his DNA all over the dishes) because he already overheard Delaine and Lucius talking....

It just gets dumber from there. Delaine kills Russ after he runs her off the road, and then drives home in his car, but then Russ's Secretary blackmails her.

She tells the toe cutters who go to kill the Secretary, but they turn the tables and kill them. Then she gets back in to Russ's car, and runs the Secretary off the road. Finally, After taking to the secretary's husband, The deputy shows up and puts an end to our misery, by arresting Delaine. Roll Credits. Now, if they somehow tried to make this a black comedy it might have worked, but they didn't. After planning out that original crime, there was no sense that the characters were even trying not to get caught or get away with their scheme...they just randomly starting killing people.

I wouldn't recommend wasting time on this movie.

Entertaining and kept me guessing
qwwqkl5 November 2022
Read a couple of reviews elsewhere, quite negative but seemed to be pointing out flaws which were a bit pointless. Watched it really because of Morgan Freeman and thought he might not put his name to a turkey. We can all find fault. I have watched many movies for 30mins and given up. I was caught out by the twists and turns . The actors although unknown to me apart from Morgan Freeman grew on me and found them all convincing unlike a few other movies I could mention. All in all a movie I would have no hesitation in recommending to my family and friends. Good entertainment no excess violence or bad language, but the absence is quite refreshing and not necessary This held me to the end, and I am not easily pleased, nor a critic only giving my view of the movie hope you enjoy it as much as I did. Excuse grammar and punctuation.

It was actually ok
dontakeitpersonal17 August 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Admittedly I was doing something else while watching this movie, but it didn't seem that bad from the pieces that I saw. I had to many 'oh?' Moments to give it lower than 6. I didn't expect the triple crosses and I actually liked the, for once, to the point killing and not giving to cents at the end of it all. I actually laughed at the end of this movie, because she killed them all or had them killed , and for me the ending meant that she got the money after spending some time in prison and she couldn't care less because she would be rich once she got out. I didn't pay too much attention to the acting performance. I honestly thought that it would be something like, the whole town takes revenge on that guy for loosing their money, then I thought oh no she is going to make it look like her neighbour was the intended victim and get away with murder that way, but nope turns out it went completely differently. Everyone wanted a piece of it, they are all dead now. It was refreshingly not trying to be complicated or smart.

Sticks to your soul
nogodnomasters27 November 2022
Warning: Spoilers
The film opens with a very bad teaser of a car accident. It takes place in Bare Hollow Mississippi. Most of the town is upset with Ross Potter (Cole Hauser). Ross left town and made it big and then came back. He had a sure investment stock because of an upcoming merger. When the merger didn't happen everybody who invested lost all of their money. (Not sure how that works, they would still have the stock.) One person who is talking to him is his neighbor and waitress Delaine Moore (Jaimie Alexander) who appears sweet on him. Ross is getting a threatening phone call, "Where will you be the minute you wake up dead?" That night Delaine's father is shot and killed. Sheriff Thurmond Fowler (Morgan Freeman) is going on the presumption someone got the houses mixed up and they were after Ross.

The film attempts to be told with an aspect of Southern religious punishment tossed into the mix, but does so very poorly only using the idea at the beginning and end. The plot and body quickly shift as folks who we see as protagonists quickly become dead antagonists. Script feel short.

Guide: No swearing, sex, or nudity.

My toe!!!
FeastMode13 April 2023
Lololol I just watched the toe scene for the fifth time and I can't stop laughing. That has to be one of the worst (best?) cases of overacting I've ever seen. To make it even funnier, the audio dubbing is completely off. AND they keep switching back to the other actors, giving their lines seriously and professionally, and then back to him and his "performance." I seriously can't stop laughing.

Why can't Jaimie Alexander get better roles???

This movie is terrible. I could tell from the first five minutes. It reeks of streaming level quality. It's highly predictable and very dumb. They laughably try to force in some themes. And then the movie just kind of ends. They don't explain how or why things are resolved. They just are. GG.

I think any direct-to-video movie with "and Morgan Freeman" on the cover should now be avoided at all costs. (1 viewing, 4/12/2023)

This movie is dead
SKD77774 November 2022
I'm so sorry I wasted money on this. And I did it because Morgan Freeman was billed as a starring role. Which he is not. First of all for a thriller, the movie looks horrible. It's photographed so poorly this would not pass on Lifetime or Hallmark. Noir thrillers are meant to be moody and textured. This is none of that. And the music, if possible, is worse than the photography. So the tone and style are a huge miss. So is the screenplay. It's obvious and sophomoric and is not only not thrilling or intriguing, it's actually bland and boring. The murder mystery is obvious and requires no thought as to who did what. The direction is bland and absolutely lacking in any kind of energy or dramatic push. In fact, it's as if the director just set up a camera and hoped for the best. The best didn't show up. As for the actors, I'll give Morgan Freeman a pass because of his body of work and his past genius, but Cole Hauser should be embarrassed. He looks lazy and like he didn't care. He thinks he's being cool by whispering every line and swilling his beer like a poser. It does not play well. He has no chemistry with his co-stars, I mean zero, and should not be the star of any movie. He does not have the charisma or presence to pull it off. He does well enough in Yellowstone while standing alongside Kevin Costner (I love this show). As long as he's charging around grumbling like a pissed off wrangler, he's OK, but if a role requires nuance and depth, Cole is not the guy. This movie should be avoided. They trick you by promoting Morgan Freeman, who worked a couple days and got a big payday. This movie is poorly written, acted, directed, photographed, scored, and most of all it's horribly produced. If someone would have cared, this movie could have be a bit better, but it was never going to be good. It's lazy, boring and worst of all, passionless.

EVEN A CULT MOVIE, IS MORE EXCITING
mercfam6 November 2022
Absolutely one of the worst unimaginative movies coming from one stellar actor and promising (YELLOWSTONE) co-star. It's a script with everyone excruciatingly trying to make it not appear as if they really just need the money(?) The story is actually good, not original, but believable if it wasn't for the awful acting that is obviously straining from the incredibly awful script.

I've enjoyed low budget films with excellent acting. And every actor actor has their regrets when asked, "What was the worst movie you ever did?" This is one of those "being written while you watching" movies. There isn't anything left for imagine. Only disappointment.

Mr. Freeman!
pantyghost4 November 2022
What in the hell!

I only saw the trailer. Mr. Freeman, that was the absolute laziest acting I have ever seen. You must be in pretty bad need of money.

Why are you tarnishing your good reputation like this. Every movie so far I have ever seen with you, have been stellar. This!? Slow, tired, lazy, acting.

I hope you do this for money, but for the joy of working. If not, then I feel sorry for you, and all your fans, me included. You are so talented, and this is sooo below you. I only hope you get cast in a great movie once again. This is clearly not that.

There... There is my review. I hope this movie is a fluke thing. Don't go the down the "Bruce Willis road", please.

Thanks.

Predictable, boring and dull
dubond5 November 2022
The Minute You Wake Up Dead is directed by Michael Mailer and stars Cole Hauser, Jamie Alexander and Morgan Freeman.

The plot of The Minute You Wake up Dead is driven primarily by the incompetence of its characters. There are plenty of alleged twists, based on a number of betrayals and hidden motives, in the screenplay by director Michael Mailer and Timothy Holland, but not a one of them seems logical or plausible unless one takes into account that everyone in the movie is incapable of basic logical thinking.

Cole Hauser can't seem to pick a good role outside of Yellowstone, Jamie Alexander deserves better then this and so does Morgan Freeman, the man is 80 years old he's probably close to retirement at this point go make some Oscar bait movies or something instead of forgettable and bad DTV movies like this.

Hopefully after the first 20 minutes will be the minute you wake up and realize its a cash grab for the actors, on a limited shooting schedule and a bad script.

I Can Tell You Exactly Why the Bad Reviews
rebeltaz-1870528 May 2023
The reason for the low rating and the negative reviews is quite simple... here you have a movie with a religious undercurrent and no modern agenda. There's no political slant. There's no identity politics. Now sexual agendas. There's just good entertainment.

Yes, Purnie's car crash is bad movie making. But I can pick apart the highest budget hollywood movie (and routinely do). If you're going to base your opinion of a movie on little things that continuity editors miss, you're never going to enjoy anything.

The acting is not oscar winning (and today, I consider that a good thing) but it's believable. I know bad acting. Well... ok, I'll give you that Lucius might not be the best actor in the world, but... he's not the brightest bulb in the movie anyway, so I can overlook that.

Contrary to other opinions, the filming was professional. None of that nauseating handheld cellphone camera filming. Plus, as an added bonus for me, indoor scenes were filmed using real, actual light! I know this is a nit-picky thing to be raving about, but nothing irks me more than indoor daylight scenes lit using the equivalent of 4 watt nightlight bulbs!

There are some plot points that are easy to see coming, but how many movies are truly original? Especially in a day and age where remakes are all you ever see? No... overall, the plot twists and turns are unique and no... you do not see them coming.

If you are looking for a checklist movie, skip it. If you are looking for something you can enjoy just for entertainment, ignore the naysayers and give this a try.

Hahahah
sarisled-0591828 December 2022
Jaimee alexander in it. Again I am only watching because I am a cri gejunkie. Saw last seen alive the day before and felt the same. This one is like a really bad tv show. Or soap opera. So baaad! Its so cringe. Who ever gave this more than 1 star cause you are forced otherwise it would be a double negative atleast, is put of their mind.

Movies are a joke these days, many of them. Acting is pathetic, anybody can clearly weep or utter the worst irrational sentences and go "hm" in awkward situations.

Everything is wrong with these crap of a movie . Watch it to learn what a bad movie is so you wont do the same mistake again next time. I laughed my a$$ off. It really sucked.

Wild third act
fluffchop30 April 2023
Warning: Spoilers
This movie is pretty good. It's more watchable than the rating would suggest. It will keep you watching. It is entertaining. I think we can expect big things from this film maker in the future. There are some things which are like what the hell? For example? Ok the guy runs the chick off the road and then pulls her out of the car and says it's going to be ok. This is after she said she'd kill him and fired a warning shot in the lounge room. Suddenly she has a gun and shoots him. NO you know she had a gun so why run her off the road which could have killed her in doing so, only to say it's all going to be ok and then not suspect she's going to shoot you? It's ludicrous stuff the more you think about it the sillier that whole sequence is. Whatever hahaha. And that's the opening of the film too so it's a big scene in the movie. There are some clever things like how the phone message was played by the assistant which we find out about later. When the cop gets shot?! It's like what the hell?! I never saw that coming. It was astounding hahah. Then they have some explanation of why afterwards when they're talking in the lounge and it makes sense. It makes sense in a very convoluted way which relies on him just happening to be outside to overhear a conversation but anyway. Again, whatever hahaa. So it's a definite ride this movie. I think people should enjoy it more than the 4/10 score it's getting but maybe it's just me in the mood I'm in. I enjoyed it and thought it was well done. It feels like a step above made for TV or like it's a good long tv episode maybe. Very enjoyable film. I don't know if I'd watch it again for a while but I might recommend it to others if they have the opportunity to see it.

Who's bad?
kosmasp10 October 2023
No pun intended - and no it definitely is not Michael Jackson in this case. Whatever you may think of him as a private person ... let's get away from that topic. I just chose the song (lyric), because it is quite fitting for the movie and the characters within. Most of them - which makes it quite hard to root for anyone.

On the other hand it makes it easy for the writers to let us be unsure where the movie is going and maybe be able to surprise us more often than not. Does it all make sense? I have to admit I did not care to think too much about that. I just let the movie do its thing - and was happy to see the actors in this. Even a Morgan Freeman needs money, right? And there is always enough time to have a look at Jamie Alexander ... no matter her role (size) ... Thríllers have to be your thing that is for sure ...

More Hollywood garbage
roger_towne1 January 2023
Sheesh, why would Cole Hauser attach his hard-earned "Yellowstone" brand to garbage like this? I can understand Morgan Freeman who's been in a freefall for a few years now. Animal Kingdom's Darren Mann is already past it and part of 1923. But after Hauser finally made a household name for himself, he joins project crap?

The issue here is not only the performances of leads Hauser and Freeman who both were painfully obvious in how much they were mailing it in, but the storywriting by (director) Michael Mailer and (co-writer) Timothy Holland. Go check out their combined experience with good movies on IMDB and you'll find it's none.

Just as you'd expect, the story here is dull, uninspiring and has more than its share of cliches. Making matters worse is the second rate sound effects and backround music which feels straight out of a wannabe video from YouTube. Just awful.

If that's not bad enough, take a good look at Purnie's (Liann Pattison) car wreck. If you look closely, the car is already damaged BEFORE it crashes. As a matter of act, a real close look reveals the bumper and marker lights were already removed. It's pathetically obvious a damaged car was being pushed into the embankment, but of course we're too stupid to notice that stuff.

Same for how a late 1990s Lincoln Town Car won't have airbags.

Shame on these people for making such garbage, and shame on Cole for taking the easy cash.

DO NOT WATCH!
cfbrjwhw25 January 2023
See above. I created an account just to warn people of this god awful movie. I repeat DO NOT WATCH! It is easily the worst movie I have ever seen. Slow, boring, worst acting ever! I feel sorry for Morgan freeman who has had his career tarnished by this woeful atrocity. To make matters worse it was a date night with no kids. Fortunately we only rented this utter garbage and not bought it. Don't worry I wouldn't have kept it on file. I am still writing as I need to fill in the character limited on this review. Told you I only signed to rate this absolute piece of garbage. Makes me sad that people may have made $$$ from this one.

Why Oh Why ... Morgan
mike_olley16 December 2022
Dear Morgan, he has brought so much joy into the world, over so many years. Sadly, he appears to have taken leave, of his senses, in agreeing to act, in this second rate B movie. Morgan plays a wise old Sheriff. But of course if the Sheriff was as wise as he appears, Morgan would know, his character, should have retired about 25 years ago. Despite Morgan's strong and sustainable ability to act, his obvious 80 plus biological years, defeats even his able ongoing talent, to be credible in this role. Law enforcement officers, are considered past it, in their late 50's.

The script is thin, and barely clings on to credibility. The very essence that creates a foundation to the film is incredulous. It's no spoiler to mention that numerous people have lost money. That's fine, good grounding, giving vigour and interest, to many sub and major plot lines. But what really ruins it, is the reason given, as to why many have lost their money, is because two companies have failed to merge! Really. Goodness me, a child in the early years at secondary school, could create a more believable dynamic than that.

No doubt Morgan demands a decent salary for his appearance. Clearly this left little to pay many more talented actors. One or two could act their way out of a wet paper bag, unfortunately not most.

All in all, a horrendously, disappointing film. Morgan cannot be proud of this effort. Best if he reads the scripts, I suggest before contractually binding himself in, in future endeavours.
