Very Disappointing
showley-162195 September 2021
I was looking forward to seeing this, as Bill Murray is a class act, but I have to say iit is one of the worst crime movies I've ever seen. Started well, but after then went down hill immediately with the prancing around the kitchen scene. Irrelevant to the story line. Would not recommend.

Botox and the mob
farleym-1944221 November 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Now I know how much botox and how many tattoos it takes to five star rating down to two stars.( It got one star back for the giant fake funbags. I have watched some scary movies but the make up on Ms. Sothcott is among the most frightening I have seen. I usually have a thing for cheap looking, trashy women but she is over the top.

Okay enough of my prudish rejection of probably a nice lady. Other than that, the movie was worth what I paid to see it. (Free on Tubi.)I have confessed before, I am no cinema critic, I don't know art. I just know what I like and this was not it.

Not Worth Your Time
SCooper741523 April 2022
I spend a lot of time writing up an elaborate review about Nemesis but realized it wasn't worth it. This film is hard to watch. It's not very well shot. Poorly edited. And the writing is its weakest element. Here are some points that sum up Nemesis.

Some of the best acting is from Rupert Holliday-Evans, who spends maybe three minutes on screen, is completely stationary, and whose character could be cut completely without any loss to the narrative.

In the first scene where we meet John's brother, the color correction changes between shots, back to back. None of it is very good.

In the scene prior, John frequently leans in and out of focus. Damien is just not in focus for significant periods of time. Shots try to include an insignificant character, creating awkward compositions. Except for when they realized this, and they don't include him, creating a strange volley of similar shots.

The only believable characters are the ones who spend the least time on screen. Our major players are pretty inconsistent and mostly just looking to spout cliche dialogue, or to drop an F-word several times in one sentence.

I like to think this is not on purpose, but the relationship between John's daughter and her girlfriend feels somewhat fetishized. In a similar vein, there is no reason for the girlfriend to meet Sadie when she has her tits out. Even if it had been her daughter like she expected, that would still be really gross. I don't understand the thinking behind that.

Yes. The actress portraying Sadie has had a lot of work done. This is not an attack on her appearance. Quite frankly, she has lost some range in facial expression. That's pretty detrimental to acting.

I did not know who the protagonist was a half hour in.

Don't watch this. This is not a so-bad-its-good experience. It's pretty boring at times and just frustrating at others. I think it could be improved with a recut. Maybe 4 or 5 stars. Still pretty weak, but maybe more viewable. I just can't fully grasp how this film stumbles the way it does. Honestly, it's pretty sad to see. I'm hopeful this production group learns from Nemesis for their future work, especially considering that they had an entire lineup already planned before Nemesis was released.

OMG...Please DO NOT waste your time, PURE GARBAGE !
jumpinjacks-880178 May 2021
Warning: Spoilers
The plot is something straight from a wanna be gangsters mind just before his addiction to crack got out of control. Jeanine Nerissa Sothcott just CAN NOT act, she is gruesome to look at and she really should just stop with the lip fillers. Used to like Billy Murray , has been in a few decent things ...YEARS AGO....but it seems these day actors will do anything for cash, even this kind of garbage. This is 1hr 27 minutes of your life you will never recover from. Just go and re-watch Goodfellas. Nuff Said. You have been warned! The good reviews are from people directly or indirectly associated with this film.

Total and utter trash
skyhawk7475 September 2022
Oh my - I have seen some bad movies in my time but this one is in a league of its own. I checked it out due to Bill Murray and Frank Harper who have done some great films but this was a joke.

Wooden acting, terrible editing and an abysmal script make this one of the worse movies of the year

Jeanine Nerissa Sothcott is an embarrassment and looks as plastic as a real life version of Lady Penelope with dark hair. One of the oddest actresses I have seen with all that botox but she did have reasonable baps. I am not sure though why she had to be half naked in that scene?

Overall dont even bother.

Horrendous
simonburgo29 October 2022
The kitchen scene - what was the point ? Absolutely none, dreadful film that doesn't hold your interest for one minute. The acting is stiff not helped by cringe dialogue and such a weak plot. Nick Moran does his best to add some quality but the producers need to shoe horn his wife into a leading role is frankly embarrassing and when as you see with the reviews you go from a straight run of 1/10 to all of a sudden 10/10 someone's playing games - save your time and energy and give this a wide berth, truly the worst of British gangster movies, take heed of unbiased reviews on all other platforms for a true consensus of the merits of this piece of work.

The best from Sothcott since We Still Kill..
v-39071-755604 April 2021
Right first thing to say is shocked at some of the comments just 1 rating really... I found the story original and a nice build up of the various charactors and when the violence came it was quick and realistic. There can be no better actor than Billy Murray to play a gangland boss brilliant. This must be the best from Producer Jonathan Sothcott since the days of vendetta and We Still Kill the Old Way, yes the man is back on form. Had me hooked from start to finish. A follow up I would not say no.

A fun thriller and a great jump start to Shogun Films upcoming movies
jeff-295336 April 2021
: The newly launched movie powerhouse Shogun Films unleashes the gritty home invasion/gangster thriller Nemesis starring Billy Murray. Murray who has quite the filmography behind him is best known for his role as gangster/crime boss Johnny Allen in the popular BBC soap Eastenders or as copper DC Don Beech in tv series The Bill.

Nemesis sees Murray play John Morgan an ex crime boss who is visiting his old stomping ground back in London. Even though Morgan is back temporarily his arrival ruffles many feathers and lives will be changed forever.

It's been a while since we have seen a hard hitting gritty gangster movie and maestro Jonathan Sothcott doesn't spare the horses in delivering a solid thriller for the first outing of his company Shogun Films.

Billy Murray and co-star Jeanine Nerissa Sothcott deliver great performances as John Morgan and Sadie Morgan. Sadie is the matriarch of the family and through thick or thin she has her families back, there is no grey area when it comes to Sadie and her family. John is the leader of the pack, an alpha who in a room can keep everyone's attention with his smooth and charming personality, when working and taking care of 'buisness' John is one man you wouldn't want to make enemies with. He is cold and ruthless.

As always it is good to see Bruce Payne on our screens and though he only has a cameo role, his presence is more than felt and you know he is a formidable force in London. Unfortunately the ONLY downside would be Danny Bear, he doesn't play a convincing tough guy which ultimately takes away from some scenes. Frank Harper unfortunately doesn't bring his A game, it's like he was sleep walking through the role.

Lucy Aarden's performance was outstanding and I do feel she will be quite busy in the future!

Nemesis is a good solid home invasion thriller which has a nostalgic 70s feel to it, you could almost visualize Charles Bronson leading a movie like this.

Another great aspect of Nemesis also plays out all the grey areas which is never really touched upon in other movies, this it leaves no room for real heroes & villains.

Terrible acting, plot holes, weird dialogue but still watchable
rapiddevil14 September 2021
'Nemesis' initially peaked my interest when I saw Nick Moran in the cast of a classic gangster movie. Whilst Billy Murray and Frank Harper's acting skills won't set the pulse racing, I figured I knew roughly what I'd be getting. I was wrong.

The first thing that immediately stuck out like a sore thumb was the strange dialogue, obsessed with everyone finishing each sentence with the other characters name. Remember the classic lines in Snatch:

"That sounds like hostility doesn't it John?" "Oh we don't like hostility, do we Errol?" "No we don't John".

It's like that the whole way through. Ok, I quickly knew who every character was but there's better methods of writing that can achieve that!

Acting was atrocious the whole way through, typified by the bizarre casting of Jeanine Nerissa Sothcott, who literally can't move anything above her lips. Whilst not a criticism of her as a person or her appearance, a basic pre requisite of acting in this kind of role does require an actor to be able to express different emotions between enjoying a nice glass or red wine or having a gun in their mouth. Sadly, she can't.

There are some classic cliché scenes, some bizarre ones and downright ridiculous ones. Very early on we get the druken copper going to the draw, putting the gun in his mouth and not going through with it. Never seen that before....

Then we have Moran at a complete loss with his life, walks in a bar and then a long chat with a guy he used to know completely changes his life around. Really?

Then to top it off we have 2 people with guns arguing over who's going to shoot a guy, when said guy is standing right there pointing a gun back at them. What? If he had anything about him he'd have shot them both whilst they were bickering. This was just blind ridiculous.

The main storyline actually wasn't bad but there's so many other random things going on with sub plots, it's just like a brainstorm of ideas bundles together and ends up a complete mess. A big meeting together between 2 big gangsters, taking up the best part of 10 minutes in the movie, which ends up having absolutely no relevance to the story at all. A filler scene, of which there are many.

Whilst generally being a terrible movie, it's curiously watchable. I don't know if I can give it any credit or it's just my love of the genre.

How anyone can give this a high score I've no idea. Movies are subjective, sure. But this is one of those that makes you very suspicious of any 9's or 10's. 'Mediocre' is a big complement to this movie.

Totally disjointed
malpaso-404448 June 2021
Wow thats got be be the worst film I've seen in a while, very disjointed, the only character that showed any promise was Bruce Paynes but he was only in for the blink of an eye shame the whole film wasn't over that quick.

Why have we lost the ability to make British gangster films ?

Just a quick note to producer's and directors looking to make one, do your homewor, know your subject material watch how it should be done as a starter watch The Long Good Friday you might actually learn something.

Paint Drying is More Entertaining
vwyqrn13 September 2022
Cheap awful rubbish.

Billy Murray & Frank Harper in awful gangster film. Nothing new there. Nick Moran is a surprise though, you'd expect from him.

It's a wonder that this drivel gets made.

Wooden script. Wooden acting. Wooden production.

If it was a secondary school drama production you'd say B for effort. But you'd never commission it as a serious film production!!

Don't bother watching this, 88 minutes of your life you just won't get back. So do yourself a favour and watch something else. Anything else. Really. Watch a Tesco ad on repeat. Watch paint dry. Watch Crossroads. Or even watch Billy Murray in The Bill when he actually had some credibility!!

Filmed In The Time Of Corona
jamesbourke5914 September 2021
Now gangster/gangland movies have never really been my thing but every so often I'll take the plunge and check one out.

My interest in this one stems from having known one of the producers on the project. Now before you raise an eyebrow and think I'm about to sing lyrically about the movie without giving my real thoughts, rest assured I've thought long and hard about this review.

Obviously filmed in the time of Corona, so with that in mind I tip my cap to all for pulling the production together in such circumstances.

As the movie begins we see a little girl running along a beach, as to why, it's a case of watch carefully and don't blink, it's all plot relevant.

What happens when a feared member of the gangster fraternity returns from exile, will things remain the same? Or will time have moved on, well as Billy Murray's John Morgan soon discovers, time waits for no man and in his absence enter the ever so suave Bruce Payne as Damien Osborne to lay down the rules of the game.

Of course Frank Morgan has other ideas and along with his wife, Sadie played by Jeanine Nerissa Sothcott and daughter Kate played by Roger Moore's granddaughter Ambra.

With a movie of this kind, how do you inject something fresh into the proceedings, as I mentioned previously it all begins at the beginning with the very brief prologue, who is this little girl and what part will she play during the ensuing proceedings.

Of course with Frank Morgan's arrival back on home soil, this ignites long fuelled passions of anger within the community plus it reinstates the passion for justice within Nick Moran world weary police officer Frank Conway, can he finally put his stamp of authority on the the returning Morgan and make the streets just that little bit safer? Or will his own demons take hold and derail his own sanity.

Whilst entertaining to a point, there are some issues, certain scenes go on way too long, the direction isn't exactly flashy given that the Director James Crow is more known in certain circles for his frequent foray's into the horror genre but this assignment was a last minute gig as he replaced the original director Adam Stephen Kelly, who wrote the script for this movie.

There is a very jaw dropping scene involving Miss Sothcott, which at first glance was perhaps not needed, but if you recall the movie world of Roger Corman and his insistence that if the plot is flagging throw in some mild nudity.

Granted afterwards, I did ponder and wonder if the scene between Miss Sothcott and Lucy Aarden's character of Zoe that followed afterward should have went in a different direction.

The storyline is a little strained in terms of trying to follow it but no doubt revisions played a part in certain elements of the coherency of the plot, I must say though the scenes between Nick Moran and Ricky Grover as Billy in the bar room scene were excellent, very understated with both actors bouncing off one another with some choice dialogue, in some respects Nick Moran's character pretty much stole the show.

Billed as a home invasion thriller, this aspect comes into play with the party scene, and the events that follow with double cross shenanigans revealing themselves between all parties plus we get a twist in the tail which as twists go did sting a little as the plot devices used to wind up the story didn't at any point suggest what had happened in the life of Frank Morgan previously.

The movie itself has been a huge hit regardless of what I or any one else's think, and having been on the set of this movie I understand the blood sweat and tears that went into making it, but perhaps if they hassle given themselves more time and filmed at a later date we might have gotten a more polished production but to be commended regardless.

Up there with WSKTOW
steve-ward-sw4 April 2021
Loved this movie, definitely up there with Sothcotts best (we still kill the old way & vengeance) Billy Murray and Nick Moran do what they do best and lead a fantastic array of talent including a great Cameo performance by Ricky Grover.. (I love Ricky Grover) The whole look and feel of this film was amazing, it was a different story to anything I've seen before as you had the bad guy vs the bad guy which I found quite original.. All in all another great film to add to the Sothcott stable and a triumphant first film for Shogun films.

A Good Twist on Gangster Formula.
Cine-watcher20011 April 2021
Nemesis brings together a stellar selection of gangster film stalwarts, with Billy Murray taking the lead. One might expect standard genre fare, and for the opening half the film plays up to that, before switching gears and entering 'The Purge' territory. Without giving too much away, the script from Adam Kelly plays the daring game of making the central Morgan family morally questionable. Ultimately you need to root for a protagonist and it's testament to Murray, Jeanine Nerissa Sothcott and Ambra Moore that we're able to still fear for their plight, even when righteousness may not be theirs. This is where Nick Moran and Lucy Aarden bring an interesting counter point as three characters converge in the finale. Moran in particular is superb.

Despite some rough edges, and a little too much exposition in earlier scenes, I enjoyed Nemesis a lot, particularly for performing a nicely timed rug pull. Elsewhere, Bruce Payne appears in a role which you might expect to have more of an integral part than it does eventually (again, part of the flip up). Payne chews scenery with his inimitable style of course. The end probably needed a bigger moment, something a little more violently explosive, but the setting is suitably claustrophobic.

Solid work all round and always a pleasure to see so many British acting greats converge. It'll prove divisive for those expecting more by the numbers but it's a thumbs up from me.

Something a bit different!
adam-696905 April 2021
Refreshing low-budget indie. Didn't go the way I was expecting at all, which was nice. I thought I was getting a by-the-numbers gangster movie with nonstop violence and swearing. I didn't get nonstop violence but I certainly got nonstop swearing! Some nice twists and turns kept the proceedings interesting, as did a stellar cast. Nice to see Billy Murray back on the screen! Recommended.

It Does What I Says On The Tin
atwambley4 April 2021
I have read a few unfavourable reviews of this movie, all of which appear to be written by wannabes who didn't get the part.....or the point. I suppose it is easy to criticise other people's hard work from behind an anonymous keyboard. Better luck next time lads !

I really enjoyed this film which set out to be a gangster geezer movie and achieved that aim admirably. The plot was interesting and unpredictable and retained the viewers interest to the end. Lead by the incomparable talents of Billy Murray, the movie powered its way through to a rewarding conclusion.

So, this movie, is not The Godfather, but it never pretends to be so. It is a good honest British gangster movie......well done sir !

Unexpected twists abound!
FilmUKLover4 April 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Few of the characters in this dark and violent Brit thriller are what they first seem, and what sets out feeling like a routine London gangsterland flick takes some unexpected turns to become something else entirely; I'll just say fans of home invasion films will be in their element! You can never go wrong with Billy Murray and he's on top form, but special word for his family here - curvaceous Jeanine Nerissa Sothcott and debuting Ambra Moore, granddaughter of Roger, who both impress immeasurably - and a delicious man-on-the-edge turn from Nick Moran. It's always good to see Julian Glover too, even though it's in little more than a cameo. You may not come away feeling you've seen anything groundbreaking, but you'll certainly have been entertained. And entertainment is what movies are all about!

A fun genre piece with trusted familiar favourites
WonderPug13 April 2021
I would suggest one disregards the negative posts. They come across like ill, bot-type comments than a review. As a creative, I'll not bring another's work down. I can be critical in a sense that as a fellow creative, I would do things differently. I've had work re-written and I have rewritten others. It is part and parcel of the game. I would alter and tweak projects I've painted, filmed and written myself. Director's cut, editor's cut, theatrical cut, when does one stop in order to satisfy everyone?

This is the first film to be release from newly formed Shogun. The logo is reminiscent of 80's and 90's production companies, Canon and Carolco, which I'm sure is intentional as I hope Shogun get to make a slew of genre pictures of their own like those powerhouses before them.

I know the difficulties in getting a film made, let alone for an audience to be able to see it. What's more, this film was made during a pandemic, so hats off to all involved and the hoops and stress everyone must have gone through when making it. It's tough.

Nemesis is indeed a genre piece, so fans of the 'We Still..' and 'Footsoldier' films will be satisfied, especially as it features go-to favourites Billy Murray, Nick Moran and Frank Harper.

Murray plays semi-retired criminal John Morgan, who along with his wife Sadie, (Jeanine Nerissa Sothcott), has returned to London from Turkey in a fleeting visit to announce some charity work and be spoken to by a 'boss', (Bruce Payne).

Murray's John Morgan is a charming villain and one wouldn't want him to perform it any other way. A character of that ilk would be. I've grown up knowing these people and many of the filmmakers know them well, too, so there's no need to note a tan or a behaviour-type from any of the roles. They nail them all.

Morgan is a family man and came across as a soft, loveable rogue. I felt for him; the old school criminal who appears lost in today's world and wants out of the game. It was probably not the wisest of statements to tell his dastardly boss, played by Bruce Payne. I would have liked to see more of him, though he might have been a costly addition. Just looking at him gave me the creeps.

Nick Moran was my favourite in this. He plays alcoholic police officer Frank Conway and portrays him incredibly well. It is the troubled Conway who kicks off Morgan's downhill spiral.

Frank Harper can do these roles in his sleep and plays Morgan's brother, Richard, effortlessly, chewing up his scenes wonderfully and whenever Harper is on screen in anything, you know something's going to turn out unpleasant.

There are double-crosses, twists and revenge throughout and it isn't long before people begin to turn. In fact, everyone turns and that's what makes this a little bit different from the rest in its genre. I wanted Billy Murray to remain the soft touch, but as previously mentioned, he's an aged villain and he hasn't got where he is by being a soft, doting father and husband.

Newcomers to watch out for are Ambra Moore, Sir Roger Moore's granddaughter, who has a great acting launch pad with this movie, as has Danny Bear, who I hope follows this with something polar opposite as I'm sure there's a decent actor in the making here. Another standout performance was actress Lucy Aarden, who - well, you'll just have to see.

A few have noted some scenes were long, but for me I liked seeing certain characters together and just talking with each other. Others have called out the twist. My goodness, has anyone seen a certain book-turned drama on a streaming platform? If Nemesis had the marketing budget of that!

People are often too quick to stick the boot in, especially with social media and a faceless Tweet here and there. Try writing a script, selling it, raising money to make a film, casting and crewing it, feeding them, producing and delivering it on time and then try doing it whilst a global health crisis is occurring and see how things go.

Would I have wanted for some things to be different? Yes, but that's with the majority of films I see, so with that, for me, 'Nemesis' is an enjoyable Friday night watch with a 'you won't believe the ending'.

Superb thriller that surely begs a sequel
tobygranville4 April 2021
Nemesis starts out as an outstanding British thriller in the mould of The Long Good Friday that ends with the "dinner party from Hell!" Never a dull moment the non-stop drama is led by brilliant Billy Murray in full underworld kingpin mould burning his enemies alive while being hunted down by Nick Moran's mad bad cop. Great support from the super talented Jeanine Nerissa Sothcott, Frank Harper and Ambra Moore (granddaughter of Roger) this is one of producer Jonathan Sothcott's best and - let's not forget - made during this last year's pandemic. How many other film-makers could pull that off? It should get an award just for that. My money's on this being one of the best British movies of the year. Can't understand the low ratings - they must be Guardian readers! A sequel must surely now be on Sothcott's to-do-list!
