A so and so film

The theme is comparatively new in Malayalam movie industry. But the script/story was not quite strong.

So many scary scenes were added just for the sake of it, which in turns makes them not so impactful after all. The script, to an extend, moves in a predictable manner. Funnily, one of the subplots felt better than the main plot. They should've made that subplot the main one.

Performance wise, everyone did a good job, but no one stands out.

Background music was ok. Some songs were not needed.

All in all, this is just a passable movie.

Not sure if it is everyone's cup of tea !

I can't decide if this flick is horror or thriller, it was blended around those two, felt it would have been better if they were stuck to one rather experimenting both. Even though the story was slightly different from the typical plots we see in movies, there was nothing special.

The narration was predictable and the twists and turns didn't work for me. Most of the characters including the protagonist couldn't bring much impact on the screen, except for the outstanding young girl. After all Mammootty is a legendary actor who could have done wonders, but in this film he couldn't do much.

Technically the film was remarkable in terms of cinematography and music. The only place where you can at least get the best of this movie is by seeing in a theater and no other place, I'm pretty sure it can't be enjoyed watching elsewhere and this is the high time we all support our industry so that we can get to see more good films hopefully.

Outstanding first half followed by cliché second half. Bgm at its top notch level🔥. International level quality. Interval portion was brilliant. Overall an average experience for me. If you can spent time and money, go for an multiplex theatre for better experience.

Mammootty's brilliant performance let down by poor writing, Manju Warrier under-utilised

With Mammooty essaying the role of a priest-turned-investigator, 'The Priest' had immense potential to offer something never before seen in Malayalam cinema.

But shoddy writing and a storyline full of cliches make it just an average experience, held together by the superb performances of Mammootty and Baby Monica (the daughter from Kaithi).

Except for a small additional twist in the climax, every other turn in the thriller can be predicted a mile away, especially for audiences familiar with top-draw Hollywood thrillers.

Exceptional sound design, background music and camera work manage to generate some chills if experienced in theatres.

The debutante director deserves praise for these elements as well as the fine detailing done in constructing Mammootty's lead character of Father Carmen Benedict, who dominates every scene with elan.

Manju Warrier is criminally under-utilised while Nikhila Vimal and Saniya Iyappan are adequate in their roles.

Set your expectations right and the film is a passable theatre experience.

A decent mystry horor thriller

The priest starring mamooty and manju warrier is a decent mystery horror thriller movie which can give a good theatre experience if you watch without any over expectation. The story revolves under fr. Carmen benedict who helps kerala police in some sort of mysterious cases. The major drawback of the film is its predictablity over the suspense and twists which was a key fact of a mystry thriller film. I think this film can satisfy the audience who sit to watch without any over expectation.

Watched after hearing few good reviews. I found it strictly average. Mammootty's screen presence couldn't help the weak writing.

The twists are very predictable. Manju Warrier's character is an extended cameo. Could have been given to some other actress. In fact no actors had any chance to perform a memorable scene. I don't know what was the intention of Saniya Iyyapan's role.

Director tried to make a James Wan style movie but ended up with a mediocre script with lot of cliches.

I am a Telugu speaking person (not the target audience). The highest positive thing is there is no lag in the movie and it is very crisp. That's the reason one can easily give it a try and maybe watch the movie till the end. The highest negative thing would be that there is no wow factor in the movie. Even though there are few potential wow factors, the makers did not properly communicated them. The main lead actor suits the character but for some reason I fell this is not tailormade for him. Overall, onetime watchable for sure if you love crime investigation/ horror/ dark movies.

The writers Shyam Menon and Deepu Pradeep devote an entire murder mystery subplot that takes up a chunk of the film's first half to put two simple plot points across. The first is that Fr. Carmen Benedict (the character Mammootty plays in the film) is a parapsychologist, and the second is that the bigger threat here is Ameya (Baby Monica), an 11-year-old orphan (which we sense the moment we see her!). Yet, I'd still say the first half is more interesting than the second. The latter half delves into possession, exorcism, and what-not in a manner that doesn't surprise us one bit. Also, Manju Warrier's role is terribly underwritten. It's difficult to categorize this film by genre, as it desperately tries to amp up the thrill factor but also focuses on predictable horror tropes. I don't think I'll fancy a second watch of The Priest ever, even if there are a couple of redeeming qualities like the watered-down superstar-isms and Baby Monica's creepy performance.

Just another horror flick with some good production value.

I had watched this movie with high expectations on prime video and was a disappointment. The 1st half of the movie goes great and the 2nd half becomes below average. Horror fans are bound to be disappointed.

If you've watched pretham (1&2), kinavally etc. Then you'll know where the story is heading & pretty much predictable storyline.

A one time watch if you really want to watch it. Or else you can skip this and save 2hr 30 minutes of your personal time.

Not up to the mark

A priest cum investigator or investigator cum priest? Confusing, huh? Yes, the movie plot was like that. It was a blend of horror-mystery- drama and thriller but can't be fall under any of them primarily. Mammotty starrer "The Priest (2021)" was a good anticipated movie for the Malayalam industry after the pandemic debacle. Star power might attract a lot of people into the theatre. The trailer and the ensemble casts made the audience expectation high. But, the storyline wasn't impressive as it supposed to be. It should be better.

Crime story to a Horror story

Carmen Benedict, a Preist join hands with police and used to solve criminal many criminal case giving credit to that police friend rather than taking it for fame. A girl came and ask Father for a help about a specific and honorable family and serial suicides of the family members who are physically and mentally disturbed after their daughter's death. All deaths seems to be suicides. But the girl who came for help says they are not suicides. Father solves the case and the wrongdoer got caught. Gradually the story turns in to a Horror genre of a 11 years old girl who got attacked by a spirit (low frequency energy) of a woman. Father solves the case and perform exorcism eventually to outcast the spirit to save the girl.

The story and screen play is good and contain many thrills which should not be missed. All the actors gave their best and involves us in story intensely. Even though the ending is not went as I expected, it's worth full to watch with family.

Mishmash of numerous horror flicks

Introductory case was laughable with poor dialogue delivery.the script was so poorly written that a great actress like manju was wasted in a flick like this.mamooty with his ridiculous get up and accessories was trying too hard to look like Sherlock.for two Stalwarts of malyalam film industry to come together,this movie was an extremely poor choice.

The Priest is not a bad movie by any means. The starting was a bit flat, especially cos of the role done by the police officer (Sivadas Kannur), who was atrocious. Also felt that his and Saniya's dubbing or pronunciation was terrible in parts. The story picks up steam though once the junior artiste's story takes precedence and daresay the middle parts were pretty good and intriguing. I was getting feels of the English movie Orphan at times, but the director wasn't that adventurous and went for a bland ending. Yea, and so the promising middle section is completely destroyed with a cliche and bland ending. Manju Warrier has nothing to do than play a totally undercooked character. And the director resorts to Deus ex machina techniques a lot towards the end to move the story forward and finish the movie (which was pathetic). It is definitely an okay movie, but the wait for a good paranormal thirller in malayalam continues.

This film is avg or below avg First of all the first have no connection with second half. The horror scene has no effect, the way horror is represents is in sold way(not too old) .The storyline is predictable,I think is pretty much messed up.camera is execellent and background music is also good.the revenge in the story is completely meaning less. Positive 1) camera is excellent 2)background music 3)acting 4)cast Negative 1)over drama 2)predictable story 3)horror scene are not good 4)most of the acting is done by child actor(she nailed it) 5)manji varrior is like a gest in this filim

The genre of this film is Horror, Mystery and Thriller. The 1st half of the film is all about the investigation of a normal suicide case, and the horror begins in the 2nd half. And that's why the ending of the 1st half is done very well. BGM should be and is very good here.

A Question may arise among many that why a priest is investigating a police case, you'll get that answer before the starting of the 2nd half. The ending of the film was really very satisfying.

Finally THE PRIEST is not new in terms of story but a very good compilation of some old stories with PERFECT STORYTELLING & SCREENPLAY.

Half baked in many ways..

Just a decent horror drama, nothing much to make thrilling, interval punch was superb, but second half was just average and climax was not that much acceptable.
