This is actually funny
jimamezaga30 January 2021
I went in cautious (cause I really like Alan Tudyk and I can't seem to find a good comedy nowadays) and I didn't wanted to be disappointed again ... but this exceeded my expectations, it's really good, and very original. Can't wait to see more!

So far it has everything you'd want! Suspense, comedy, plot. This could easily turn into a 10.

The start is great

Loved the first episode. There were few places that it was funny, all actors felt good in their roles. The twist at the ending twist could have been predictable, but for me it was quite a fun shock. overall strong episode looking forvard to next week

A Solid 10 Because Everything is Perfect
antonnym6911 February 2021
Tudyk is really in his element here. He's a master of sci-fi in general and beautiful as a fish-out-of-water alien getting used to how we do things in a small Colorado town. I love everything about his performance. Also, I'm from a small Colorado town, and they NAILED the look and feel. Just beautiful. Wonderful, interesting, exciting premise, the story here, the plot is absolutely ripe with opportunities that are not wasted. How refreshing and original! The dialog, the writing is outstanding. World-class. The special effects are so good, one tends to accept them as reality instead of recognizing them as special effects. I immediately enjoy the look, the feel, the pace. Terrific directing by David Dobkin, whose work I wasn't aware of, but it's clear he is hyper-competent. Supporting cast are excellent and interesting and in only one episode, seem multi-dimensional, each in his/her own way. To put it very concisely, this episode, and more generally, the concept and the series is supremely entertaining from start to finish. I can't wait to see the rest of it.

Episode 1

Warning: Spoilers
Syfy has had some intriguing shows over the years and I hope this is the next one. It is kind of a basic procedural if you take out the alien aspect, but the humor worked whereas with your NCIS or something that's not always the case. Maybe that can help this show take off.

A murderous but empathetic alien that embodies the best of humanity juxtaposed with characters embodying the worst of humanity. Dark, fast humour, reminiscent of Deadpool sparkles through the plot threads. Absolutely refreshing and watch worthy. Hope it makes many seasons.

Pilot
Prismark1031 January 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Resident Alien is billed as a comedy drama.

The pilot has some dark comedy but really it is more of a quirky drama.

Taking its premise from Mork & Mindy or 3rd Rock from the Sun or even maybe Starman.

This is a fish out of water alien adapting to the humans of Planet Earth.

Alan Tudyk is the alien who crash lands in Patience, Colorado and assumes the identity of a doctor who he encountered and killed.

Four months later the police come looking for Dr Harry Vanderspiegel, the man the alien is impersonating. The town's resident doctor has been killed and they need him to do an autopsy.

Luckily the alien has learned English by watching Law & Order. His species is also highly intelligent so he he can easily deal with medical matters.

It is just interacting with humans that he needs more work on. Pretty soon he gets drunk in the bar with the late doctor's assistant Asta and dancing to Nicki Minaj.

This was a pretty good opening episode. Tudyk adds a layer of comedy. The central arc is that there is a killer among the town's community.

Also Asta is dealing with an abusive husband. The alien wants to kill a boy who can see that he is not human. The alien's mission was to destroy all life. So it is not all a barrel of laughs.

I suspect the alien will soon appreciate that human beings have more to offer.

It's the Dodgeball movie pirate guy!! (Minor spoilers)
marskiz2 February 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I confess to not knowing much about Alan Tudyk, let alone how to pronounce his last name...

But this quirky show was eerily endearing, if that is an appropriate thing to say. A murderous alien on a mission to destroy the human species...played by an actor that has some really quirky faces and lines that just work.

My Dad was watching it first, so I stumbled across it randomly as I saw this alien headed guy, and thought, "Why is my Dad watching one of those cheap alien movies...groan...!" Then I thought, "Oh, that guy from the Dodgeball movie I haven't seen in ages. He was funny! He has his own show now?!"

I hadn't seen Tudyk in other stuff, but I did recall seeing glimpses of ads for this show...somewhere haha. I knew I recognized it, but I didn't have any intent to see the premiere, yet sometimes, that's when you find the best of shows... unlike my intention to watch The Walking Dead's premiere on Halloween 2010, or see Game of Thrones in the first couple weeks when it debuted after good reviews. I hope this show lasts, as it may go somewhere! Its not action packed like TWD, or GoT, but it is fun in its own way! Its been...well I can't remember I ever watched a TV show on SyFy channel! I don't have much time for new TV shows usually.

My Dad says he already has the 2nd Episode scheduled for recording on Feb 3rd, and I can't wait either. He usually doesn't record shows in advance like that, except for NCIS, and Fox News shows. So, if my Dad liked the pilot, then that may say something about the show. After looking up a bit more info, I never knew it was a comic as I am not into comics.

I hope this show does well! The Pilot episodes can be hard to do, but the show was reallllly well done, and has life to it!

The only other actor off the top of my head that can "maybe" pull off what Alan Tudyk is doing for this show is Benedict Cumberbatch from BBC's Sherlock fame. I'm sure there are others, Downey Jr. Maybe, but...I didn't know this Alan actor can do what he is doing.

Keep it SyFy!!!

pilot

Warning: Spoilers
Not bad for a pilot but not goof though. The alien and beginning of his connection with people could be take longer time and not in just a single day. Its like there is a rush to continue the storyline. I hope the next episodes be slower than pilot episode.

Dumb and cliche.
jeroen-1062 March 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Managed to slightly smile at some point, but it's not that smart and funny. The premise is a bit lame too. A terrible bar scene where a woman shows a lot of interest in the 'alien' based on interactions that normally scare away women. And then the absolutely childish dancing scene on auto-tune GenZ music that apparently is liked by the two women. A bar lady saying she likes "bad boys" and drinks like she's a customer. It's all so unrealistic and out of place, American cliche class-C writers room crap. And then the alien kinda wants to dance because of, instinct I guess? What is this, a children's show?

Can believe the ratings for this crappy pilot.

Very Funny
Littleman9525 February 2021
Plot: this introduction episode is very funny. The beginning is a little strange, you can't get where it want to get, but as much as you keep watching it became more and more clear and funny.

Actors and Actress & Acting: it's just the first one episode, but I have a good impression about the main characters.

Soundtrack: I liked it.

Visual Effects: nothing to say, they are well done (but maybe improvable).

Conclusions: if you are searching something to cheer you up this show will be a good decision. It also has that mysterious aura that makes it more intriguing.

Fun
cauldra11 March 2021
First of all, I don't watch many comedies. Secondly, I don't watch regular tv. However, I love Alan Tudyk so I wanted to see what he was up to this time. He is, as always, perfect. I laughed and laughed and I can't wait for next week. I'm already hooked.

I wouldn't say Resident Alien is too original, it's basically House, but it's fun and Tudyk can do no wrong.

Just 1 minor note - around 16:35, they show the mirror/true version of him, and his hand is human with 5 fingers.

Stereotypes are funny?
bigby-7847528 February 2021
The creators apparently never even read a single issue of the comic series this is supposedly based on. The main character is immediately portrayed as a murderer and we're supposed to relate to him?

The sheriff is the worst type of stereotype! He happens to be black so he calls himself "Big Black" and gets upset if anyone calls him by name. The mayor happens to be white so the sheriff calls him "Mayor Snowflake"!?! If the characters were reversed and the 'nicknames' were similarly reversed, the entire world would have immediately condemned it!

This has absolutely NOTHING to do with the comic series and if Dark Horse actually thinks that this abomination would actually get people to read the books, or get readers to watch the series, they need to reconsider their management.

Makes no sense to me
rich-1216911 March 2024
I'm currently reading a much better version of the same thing. A monster tries to fit in with humans.

But in the book at least the rules are set. How can a little boy see through shapeshifting? Wouldnt that imply that the alien is using mind control to trick everyone into seeing something that isnt there?

Well I see no evidence he has a huge body that is mentally projecting a smaller one. So that makes no sense. Can the boy see through time?

So in a small town the police can just force you to look at dead bodies because you are a doctor? What kind of doctor does not seem to matter.

See its the little things that bother me. I guess the show isnt bad. Seems like it might be funny. But if only 1 out of a million people can see him then how come that in a small town they have the 1 out of a million hot single female bartender that wants to get crazy with every guy she meets?

Resident Alien.
bombersflyup29 January 2021
Warning: Spoilers
A weak and empty foundation laid to start a series, it may improve upon that in later episodes, unlikely though. No intro or song, with poor secondary characters. Mildly interesting in amusement, but disappointing.

Alan/alien ruined it.
ismaildansadiq29 January 2022
Am supposed to rate it an 8 or 7 out of ten bit am only giving it 5 mainly because of the alien/Alan. The dude that plays the alien is awful his facial expressions, his speech, his laughs etc. Alan as an alien is awful. Now I know the director told him to act weird for the alien part but he is acting a bad weird. The people in the show would not go near him with his facial expressions, laughs, speech etc. DArcy would not like Alan. Asta would not Associate with him. The alien costume is silly looking. Not good to look at. These two things ruin it.
