Let's be honest..
brandonsmuxx29 January 2021
Is this a good movie? Not really. Is it as bad as the reviews suggest? Absolutely not. So what is it? It's about as average as average gets in found footage horror. The premise is great if you are one of the few who enjoyed the 1st, like myself. It has some pretty good moments, just too many BLAH moments. Will you revisit it or even remember it a month from now? Probably not. But 1 star? No.

Not a good movie, BUT...
kmashburn-000439 May 2021
Dumbest (and most annoying) lead character imaginable, terrible acting, infuriating plot contrivances. BUT...this film has a lot of jump scares, and it does them quite well. Yes, I know the jump scare is the lowest common horror denominator, but I still have to give some credit for timing and creepy visuals. Even as I sat rolling my eyes at the stupidity of everything, the next jump scare would still jolt me right out of my seat. I'd watch it again just for that. And while the cheap thrill is not my end game, you have to kiss a lot of horror movie frogs to find one you *might* go out with once just for coffee. So I'm semi-satisfied when an otherwise crappy movie pulls off one or two decent scenes, and this one definitely does that.

Unnecessary sequel
haskel-729512 April 2021
The Fear Footage was an unexpectedly fun ride. It renewed my waning interest in the found footage subgenre. The sequel, as is the case with many sequels, does not live up to the original. This one is not an anthology, and it falls prey to the trap that many found footage films fall into: a loooooooong buildup. The tension was the key to the original's success - there wasn't a single wasted minute. We waste many minutes here. Decent once it finally gets going, but that isn't enough to make it recommendable.

Oh dear oh dear oh dear oh dear

A couple of years ago I watched a movie called the Fear Footage and it became a bit of a running joke between me and my friends. We'd say that the movie scale was Fear Footage to Shawshank Redemption, that it was the movie all bad movies should be measured by and made the Sharknado films look like the Godfather series.

Well because it became such a big deal for us we all tracked their being a sequel and laughed in awe at the trailer, when my man pal Jason bought it for me as a joke present we excitedly sat together to watch this inevitable masterpiece and laughed from start to finish.

Like the first one it looks awful, the whole thing is so amateurish it makes Birdemic look like it had Hollywood level special effects teams. The sound guy must have fallen asleep because there was no consistency there and the story? Well I'm being nice saying there is one, this is an unintentional comedy almost like a two Ronnies sketch show but with bad lighting.

Is it worse than the first? I'd say they're on the same level and arguably the same film really. I'd like to thank Ricky Umberger and the whole team behind these movies, I haven't laughed this hard in years.

Keep your awful student looking films coming!

Again?
BleakDestiny14 March 2020
Fear Footage (2018) is certainly not the kind of movie you'd expect to get a sequel. I stand by this due to its budget, its obscurity and that it was 17 shades of terrible. Easily the worst movie of that year it was a cringe worthy attempt at a horror that had me wincing face palming and angry that I'd given it my time. For some reason I gave this second attempt a try and once again I'm angry that I did and even more angry at the creators for thinking this constitutes as a horror movie. Badly made, badly written, badly acted, there really is no excuse for this. For the love of everything that's good in the world lets not see a third part.

Not solid found footage
phokebocli17 March 2020
Have you ever seen a found footage movie before? If so you'll know they follow a strict formula.

Introduce the characters Take them to a haunted location Weird things happen People go missing They justify why they're still recording Running, screaming, night vision Camera falls to the ground, credits roll

That describes easily 99% of found footage features, they're cheap and cheerful to make therefore indie filmakers with zero money or talent pound them out like hotcakes. The first Fear Footage movie was a great example of this, non-existent budget, zero enjoyment and an all round awfully made movie brought to us by people with no imagination or skill at crafting a story.

Fear Footage 2 is almost the same movie as the first just with minor tweeks. Regardless it still ticks the above boxes and is yet another found footage movie that can be dumped onto the pile of forgettable awfulness with all the rest.

Until this found footage phase ends I suggest you avoid them and watch something with more substance.

Not awful
salloyd-924676 November 2022
Not an academy award winning movie, but not understanding the overly harsh negative reviews. Also it them read as being personal or written by people who don't enjoy found footage. If you wanted the first movie, and don't like found footage as so many others here have stated, then I would not reccomend this for you. Otherwise, it was entertaining, and very low budget. I don't consider low budget to be an insult though. Most of the interesting movies I've seen lately are low budget and this one is no different. Better than the first one. Only didn't give more stars because it really isn't that phenomenal. Just a good movie to pass the time.

Pulling teeth
fricruphic18 March 2020
I waited for something to happen, I assumed the film was a slow burn to some incredible payoff then after little over an hour the credits rolled. Where was the film? Where abouts was the content, the horror, the storyline? It has none of these things, it's a series of laughable attempts at horror imagery with little to no connection. There is absolutely no story here, it's just mess.

A Sequel That's Better Than the First
jsimpson-6764218 March 2020
A lot of movies fall into the trap of hitting a homerun with the first installment, then attempting to do too much in the sequel that leaves a bad taste in your mouth. The Fear Footage 2: Curse of the Tape found a way to make a clever sequel that stayed true to the Found Footage genre. As a huge Found Footage fan, I've been disappointed in sequels to some of my favorites. (I'm looking at you Blair Witch 2) TFF2 did the opposite in my opinion. It took an anthology and turned it into a full film. I have to admit, as much as I enjoyed the story, the characters, and the originality of the dialogue and interactions, I found myself thinking "where are the scares?' Don't get me wrong, the movie is creepy from beginning to end, but as many jump out of your seat scares the first had, I was missing them. Then, the final 20-30 minutes came...and it was awesome. I know its so cliched, but there was so much suspense, I literally found myself not breathing...yes, had to remind myself to breathe. I truly respect Mr. Umberger for his passion and execution of the genre, and really hope he continues making more. Whether it be a Fear Footage 3, or just a new story to focus on. He's definitely doing something a lot of people would love to do but don't have the courage to do it, me included. Cheers Mr. Umberger on another homerun!!!

You didn't listen
CameronDMeister14 March 2020
I watched the first movie shortly after it came out, I ended my review with the following.

"Please don't make a sequel or anything else unless you're going to go to film school and more to the point stop drowning in shill reviews."

Yes I hated it, truly hated it and was angry that I'd just watched yet another copy and paste clone found footage movie like hundreds of others. It frustrates me that people don't try with new ideas and essentially just remake other peoples films which were bad in the first place. Curse of the tape makes all the same mistakes, of both the first movie and the hundreds of other ghost/haunting found footage movies. It's just SO bad, SO unoriginal and SO much of a slap in the face to movie fans who expect a degree of originality and flair to the films they watch.

If I could rate it lower I would, this is a 0.3 at best. I said it last time and I'll say it again, "Please don't make a sequel or anything else unless you're going to go to film school". At least this one hasn't been drowned in shill reviews all with the same wording and fresh accounts YET.

A honest but critical review
tromimebib20 March 2020
I rented this because across social media I'd seen the movie advertised as scary, creepy and I'll have trouble sleeping afterwards. Having now seen it I can tell you those words don't describe the film at all, words that do are boring unoriginal and feeble. It's as scary as Zombeaver and as well made as Birdemic!

Found footage, shaky camera, screaming, running, night vision, sound familiar? This is like every other movie of its type and bored me to near tears, I almost turned it off as I was drifting off.

Terror.....ble.
LordDerpofDerp7 April 2020
When you go into found footage you should rightly keep your expectations low as it seems to be a type of movie that folks make when they have no money. They look cheap, sound cheap and simply are cheap and Curse of the Tape is a fine example of this.

The first thing you notice is how ugly it is, Blair Witch is decades old yet still looks professional by comparison. The second thing is that you'll have seen it all before! It so badly wants to be V/H/S but instead comes across like the dreadful ABC's of Death if that had been made by nursery aged children.

Those involved should be ashamed for the blatant recycling from other movies and lazy filmmaking. I'm not saying this is bad I'm saying it's terrible and should be avoided at all costs.

A great follow up sequel
jjbreon-8165127 March 2021
Again I don't understand the bad reviews. Clearly most reviewers aren't familiar with found footage movies. This was a great follow up to the first film and the plot thickens with this sequel. With a great story line and plenty of jump scares this sequel delivers.

Worst found footage ever?
zebediahrain16 May 2020
Story: 2/10

There really isn't one, it touches upon the events of the first movie but lets be honest that barely had a plot anyway.

Visuals: 1/10

Standard ugly found footage format but with an ultra low budget and trying things they just couldn't pull off well.

Cast: 1/10

Alike the first film Umberger doesn't even have the decency to have the films cast on and to be fair I wouldn't want to be connected to this mess either.

Audio: 2/10

Scratchy quality, worse than before.

X-Factor: 3/10

Very little going for it in this regard and everything is so dark you can't see anyway.

The Verdict: 1/10

Actually manages to be worse than the first film and I didn't expect that! Let's just hope it doesn't become a trilogy.

Solid found footage!
rejenkin17 March 2020
After seeing the first Fear Footage and loving it, we watch the sequel. My only single complaint was that it takes a while to get really going, but once it does, holy mackerel! Last 15-20 minutes will getcha! Really really enjoyed this one. Hopi Nd there is a 3rd installment in the future!!

You're joking, right?
anarchystevens16 May 2020
How does this pass as a film? No really, how is these allowed to be considered as such? When does the line between student film and actual movie end? This is the kind of thing you'd imagine your 14yr old son making with his buddies and being proud of but you don't have the heart to tell him it's awful. It's dark, it's badly made, it's just so very very bad.

Garbage
HeyHay3720 March 2021
Horrific acting. This movie actually seems to steal from other movies such as the Blair Witch (standing in the corner in a basement), the Ring (cursed video tape), Hell House LLC (creepy piano tune), Sinister (video tape again). I have seen my fair share of derivative horror movies, with things that have been done before, but still have some sense of individuality which makes it worth a watch. This trash, however, was not. Why a sequel when the first was so bad?! I hate plagiarism-even more so when it is blatant and poorly attempted.
