Good idea. Stupid everything else.
stevelivesey6712 May 2022
Not as bloody as Saw. Not as clever as Cube. Not as inventive as Escape Room. Not a good film.

Badly directed and edited, bad script, stupid ending, 'seen it all before' plot, mostly poor acting.

The black actress wins an award for the most annoying person in film...ever.

Avoid.

Should have learned from "In the tall grass" or written a better ending.
edjehunter8 May 2022
There is no better way to say this than, it's impossible to enjoy this movie that leads to a non-ending with no conclusion, no revelations, nothing noteworthy explaining the mystery. And that's a pretty cardinal sin in a mystery movie.

I would say watch "Into the tall grass" instead, also not an amazing movie, but better than this.

I actually really enjoy movies like "Escape Room" and "Tournament of Champions", the cube, squid game and it feels like this movie wants to be one of those, but ends up being none of those.

It's too bad, because the actors are working hard, it's shot well, effort has gone into this, truly. If you could reshoot the ending, make it a little longer, give it an actual ending, than it would work. But it's simply horrible in its current state.

I'm kind of hoping this was a case of the studio or producers screwing this up, which still would be horrible, but then at least it wasn't the fault of the writers/director and the actors.

Just Ok

Warning: Spoilers
This movie was not great, but also was not the worst film I have seen either. Think of Escape Room with corn instead. It was at least half good so hence the 5 stats. I do not think it was worth just one star though. I am not sure why now a days ppl will ONLY dub movies with a score of 10 or 1. Like there is not an in-between. I do NOT think they should make a pt.2 like the movie suggests, but who knows, maybe pt. 2 will be better.

This movie was predictable and the acting was FAKE af. The whole plot was generic and you never found out what was the point or what was going on. Ending was hollow and not worth the time they put into making it. I will not be seeing this one again or suggesting it to anyone that I know.

Absolute idiocy
aelthric8 May 2022
Warning: Spoilers
The storyline of a group of people with little in common having to work together toward some ultimate goal is a well trodden road, many films do this really well but this review is not for them it is for "Escape the Field" which I had the misfortune to sit and watch all the way through to the ridiculous ending.

At first it showed some promise but when will bad film makers stop hanging their storylines on stupid decisions by stupid characters?

At a time when one of their number has been attacked and dragged off by something unknown they all decide to scatter and run in different directions because they think they hear her screaming from those directions.

Then we have a compass that points to a water tap (Would love to know how that compass is supposed to work).

Then we have a mysterious map under the bark of a dead tree for these idiots to find, well I say map but in reality it is just a checkerboard.

But the thing that really REALLY annoyed me was the final scene where a team of what we are to believe are soldiers wearing gas masks (With British Accents) move in on the last remaining person (Although what happens to the English Girl is not explained, maybe she is one of the Soldiers With Gas Masks???) and as the camera draws back into the sky you see that the field is in a huge under ground chamber with huge closing doors but as the camera pulls back even further you see that this SECRET underground field in in the middle of SUBURBAN LONDON yes that's right the camera draws back to show that this field is roughly in Peckham... One of the most populous areas in the World and we are to believe their built this Under London???

So recogisable is the River Thames I was expecting the drum beat intro to the Eastenders Soap Theme...

This is just the final nail in the coffin of credibility for this terrible movie...

Absolute fluff
bangel33227 May 2022
A film that teased us in the beginning with mystery, intrigue and interesting puzzles turned out to be nothing but 90 minutes of wasted time. The film made no sense and went absolutely nowhere. How films like this are given the green light by studios boggles the mind. Awful, just awful.

Stupid
Draysan-Jennings7 May 2022
I could tell after watching the trailer this film had the potential to be pretty bad. But because I like some of the actors I decided to give it a shot. Bad idea..That was a total waste of time. About an hour in I couldn't take anymore and turned it off. Dont make the mistake I did. Watch something else.

I didn't hate this
smoke011 June 2022
I actually enjoyed this more than In The Tall Grass, which isn't saying much, but I had read the story that was based on and was disappointed in the film adaptation.

This was more interesting to me and just isn't as bad as a lot of these reviews claim it is, so I felt the need to give my two cents as a counterpoint to all the undeserved negativity. This is no masterpiece, but it kept me entertained and watching till the end.

Entertaining but derivative

Ever seen the Canadian cult sci-fi thriller Cube?

How about Netflix's adaptation if the Stephen King story In The Long Grass?

Well, imagine the story of the first, but the setting of the second. That is what you have here.

And that's it. There's nothing new, nothing imaginative; just "Cube, but in a field".

Don't get me wrong, I wasn't bored at all, but everything just seemed too familiar. But there were other problems.

Some parts where painfully predictable. Others where the most over-played of clichés (the ex-soldier still haunted by how he let his platoon down, anyone?).

At one point, a character makes reference to something they couldn't have known about. It seems like a really clumsy hint that this character is not to be trusted, but it's never followed up, so why include it? Either the film-makers thought it was a clever way of second guessing the audience (it's not, because it makes things even more nonsensical) or they were not aware of their own continuity.

How about the "Impassable door" that totally blocks our heroes, only for one of them very shortly later to pass through (off camera and without any explanation or reference) with no apparent difficulty. Twice!

As I said, despite all the criticisms, I can't claim I wasn't entertained. The pace was good, and the acting largely fine (though a few of the characters were so 2D they would hardly have been missed however well acted).

It's just that, at best, it offered nothing new and, at worst, fell prey to all manner of clichés and plot-contrivences.

An interesting and promising idea.
stylss15 May 2022
An interesting and promising idea. Enjoyed the basic puzzle aspect of this at first. There were a few mildly predictable twists, some jump scares but the acting is kinda annoying and bad, the CGI effects laughable, but worst of all is the frustrating and unsatisfying ending that doesn't provide any explanation or answer any questions.

Basically felt like if Cube (1997) or Saw (2004) were set in a cornfield and not as good.

Actually not bad, for a newb filmmaker.
Top_Dawg_Critic25 July 2022
This is newb producer, writer and director Emerson Moore's second film (with only one prior short), and it wasn't as bad as all these wannabe critics and their one's. Clearly it was a low budget B film, and all things considered, I've seen worse big budget Hollywood A-films lately.

Moore's directing was actually impressive, with some great aerial shots, unexpected jump-scares, and fairly decent cast direction. Cinematography was spot-on, but it was the score - especially for a B film, that was perfection. This is a rarity in B films, where the score is always loud, overbearing, constant and unfitting. Even the pacing was decent for the 89 min runtime.

There was however a huge missed opportunity with the writing; of the three writers, had one of them been somewhat a seasoned writer, the story could've been more cohesive. Although a refreshing and original take on the "escape room" genre films, there were some elements that could've been omitted, such as the red vile-filled dart and what followed, and other elements than needed more attention, such as a better narrative structure and more character development. I don't mind films that leave unanswered questions, but a little more clarity would've gone a long way. The ending wasn't bad either, but also had potential to be much more.

Rookie mistakes aside, I still enjoyed this one, and it's a well deserved 7/10 for the newb filmmaker. I hope Moore takes advantage of the door he left open for a sequel.

Just another dubious cornfield movie...
paul_haakonsen7 May 2022
Had I heard about the 2022 thriller "Escape the Field" prior to watching it? Nope, not even as much as a single word. But I have to say that the movie's poster/cover was actually interesting enough to catch my attention.

Needless to say that with "Escape the Field" being a movie that I hadn't already seen, then of course I would find the time to sit down and watch what writers Emerson Moore, Sean Wathen and Joshua Dobkin had to offer.

However, I have to say that director Emerson Moore just failed to deliver a movie that provided me with much of any entertainment or enjoyment. In fact, "Escape the Field" turned out to be a rather mundane and generic stuck-in-a-corn-field type of movie. Yeah, this has been done and seen before, and with more enjoyable results. So "Escape the Field" just wasn't cutting it for me.

The storyline from Emerson Moore, Sean Wathen and Joshua Dobkin proved to be insanely mundane and didn't have any thrills or excitement to it, which made for a very dubious viewing. It was a real struggle to sit through this movie and feign interest in it. So yeah, best not waste your time, money or effort on this one.

I wasn't familiar with the cast ensemble in "Escape the Field", but they put on fair enough performances actually. Just a real shame that they had next to nothing to work with in terms of script, character and contents.

My rating of the 2022 thriller "Escape the Field" from director Emerson Moore, whom also had a playing role in the movie actually, lands on a generous three out of ten stars.

Worth a watch.
SamWizeGanji23 July 2022
I don't understand the people who down vote new movies immediately.

I had a fun time and didn't make an instant connection to movies that I already love, such as "Cube".

This is worth watching, great acting and mystery. An hour in, I had assumptions, but didn't know exactly where it was going.

I've had more fun watching Escape the Field than big "blockbusters" recently. The only exception I can make, was watching Elvis (2022).

The only rotten tomatoes I see, are the early reviews! Too many people rate movies with ridiculously low scores. I'd probably rewatch this movie again. Here is my personal rating system for movies:

1-Won't watch again 2-Horrible, but I've seen worse 3-Didn't like it, may have something decent 4-Bad, but not terrible 5-Indifferent 6-Good, I might rewatch it 7-Solid, probably going to it watch again 8-I liked it, will watch again 9-Loved it, will recommend and watch again 10-Favorite of all time, will watch again and again and again and again and again.

Kept my attention
I would probably give it more of a 5 to 6, but I rated higher to compensate for some of the terrible reviews. I actually found it interesting. It reminded me of a dangerous outdoor escape room. The main issue I have with it was the ending. They could have done so much more with it. If you do watch it, be aware that there is one of those hidden final scenes at the end after a few credits. I could tell by some of the reviews that not everyone stayed on and saw it.

What the heck just happened?!
LobsterTailsWithButter17 October 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I personally enjoy B movies and can usually tolerate some of the lower level plots but this one was a major fail. Basically an escape room flick with no way to escape, filled with idiotic characters that don't use common sense and that you hope die as soon as possible. And that horrid lame ending with zero explanation?! What was that? I literally said out loud "What the h*ll?!" and my dog just stared at me. Total waste of my time that could have actually been spent watching something worthwhile. Any person who is rating this over a 4 is full of manure. Take my advice and avoid this one like the plague.

Don't bother....Total Crap!!!
5eriously10 May 2022
I thought the movie idea started with promise, the trailer looked interesting, and it went downhill from there. Originally I thought was this set on planet earth? Then I thought WTF is going on and why, then I thought well maybe I'll get some answers, but no it totally failed to deliver.

Without any background or wrap up the film basically takes you nowhere, so then you ask why have I spent the last 1 hr 20 mins of my life on this in the first place?

This really is not a great film, I think the one star rating is probably to much, if director provided some payoff at the end that would have lifted the whole movie........ sadly no :(

The fast overview, people wake up in a field, no explanation, people start dying, some explanation. There is no escape and at the end there are no answers to what you just watched! The End.

reelmuzikfein7 May 2022
Absolutely horrible. I know some movies ignore logic but this movie just ignores everything. Literally a waste of time. Please don't watch this movie. Nothing about it is good. Half way through the movie. I had way more questions then answers. It just seems like they just made the movie just because they could make it. This is why I don't like watching movies. I wasted my life watching this movie. Don't be like me. Skip this movie.

Who writes this crap?
wormsoftheerth10 May 2022
It never ceases to baffle me just how bad most movie writers are and how someone could sit back after writing something like this movie and think "yeah that's a job well done". Ugh.

This is such an incredibly bad movie; it's basically a Cube knock-off (actually it's more like a knock-off of a Cube knock-off) that takes place entirely in a corn field and whose writers don't understand any of the things that made Cube a good movie. The movie fails on just about every level; it wants to mimic cerebral puzzle movies but the writers either don't understand the fundamental concepts behind those movies and/or they are just inept. There is no plot here other than "we need to escape", which would be ok if the journey was at least entertaining but it isn't. The "puzzles" and the "traps" are all completely arbitrary. Things only tie into one another on the most basic and forced level. Nothing makes sense and they don't bother to offer any kind of explanations. The writing is braindead. The writers simply don't understand the fundamentals that make a convincing/meaningful puzzle/escape room scenario - in Cube, for example, there are strict environmental limitations which force the characters to have to do certain things, (being trapped in a impenetrable cube where the rooms shifted at intervals so there is no obvious path out nor any way to "cheat") therefore they had no choice but to go from room to room and try to figure out the mechanics of how to escape. Or like in Saw, characters have a story which explains why they are there and generally have specific skills which must be exploited to beat the puzzle(s). Here there are no such constraints, nor skills necessary. They could have just lifted someone up to easily look over the corn to see where you need to go, or climbed the giant tree which is easily visible. Or hell, they have matches (which they used to somehow make a torch which appeared for 5 seconds and was neither explained nor mentioned again) - just burn all the corn down! Or just walk directly through the corn to avoid all the traps which only show up on the paths. I could go on; it's just so stupid and insulting to the audience.

The characters are all 1D and don't matter. The script is infuriatingly unrealistic - nobody asks any questions or tries to figure anything out, they just sort of plod along from random thing to random other thing while pointlessly bickering. They're all equally bland and worthless. No one knows anything, no one's backstory matters, and no one seems to have any useful specialized skills. The deaths are just as vapid; characters get killed in the most boring ways and forgotten about immediately.

The only things that stand out in this movie are those which are super derivative of other movies. Nothing is explained or delved into in a meaningful way. I will admit that a couple of the puzzle elements were decent, but ultimately it doesn't matter since everything was so arbitrary and pointless anyway. Don't think you need to hold out with this one because there is no great reveal or explanation. The end is super lame and CRINGINGLY derivative. Avoid this movie and see any of the myriad Saw, Escape Room, or Cube (even the godawful Cube 2: Hypercube is better than this) films instead. If you have a podcast or youtube channel where you make fun of bad movies this would be a great choice.

The compass always points here.

Warning: Spoilers
Six people attempt to walk out of a corn field. Sam (Jordan Claire Robbins) is to first we see waking up in the field. Hint: final girl. This is similar to an escape room film, except it is a corn field with green stalks and rotting corn. They are also being hunted by a creature. There is a siren that goes off like the first "Time Machine" film. Ending was a bit hosed.

Guide: F-word. No sex or nudity.

Worth a Watch
audreyniewinski10 October 2022
I had no idea what this movie was about besides the information from the tv. I decided to give it a try and it wasn't a bad movie by any means. I'm not sure why all the negative reviews, people needed to be more open minded to the fact that everything was shutdown bc if CoVid when this was filmed. Nobody was working let alone making movies I think for the capabilities at the time it's a decent film and it has plenty of potential for a second film. The idea of dropping people off in the middle of nowhere and having them find their way out is definitely not new but the acting was good and there was plenty of mystery left if they wanted to pick things up again.

Unsatisfying Scifi Mystery
jollyjumpup7 June 2022
Warning: Spoilers
The best mysteries build a seemingly unsolvable puzzle that begs to be solved, keeping the audience guessing until the final big reveal that lets them in on some tantalizing secret that's been taunting them from the first act.

"Escape the Field" is not one of them. It's a sci-fi mystery that owes a lot to "Cabin in the Woods" and "In the Tall Grass" - but it's annoyingly muddled. What's frustrating is that it sets up plenty of intriguing puzzle pieces that starts you guessing about what's going on but never lets you in on the secret.

The many "clues" never add up and the ending is highly unsatisfying, obviously designed to set up a sequel while failing to resolve the mystery. After dragging you through 90 claustrophobic minutes it just leaves you wondering. And what it left me wondering was who after seeing this would want to see a sequel?

Spoilers -Watch the end scene after credits
DreamVividly4 January 2023
Warning: Spoilers
This was not as bad as so many are saying. I have teenagers & preteens that love thrillers and scary movies and this worked out great for them to watch. There was no nudity/sex scenes and just mild gore, but yes people do get killed. This probably should have been rated PG-13 in my opinion. If you are looking for something to watch with your older kids this is not bad. Aside from the many F bombs, it's pretty mild. There are a few jump scares and intense scenes which was exactly what we wanted to experience. The mystery of it kept you guessing. The acting was good but not great. I think the movie could have used at least one character that stood out more or made you root for them more. The character development was just not there. A back story on how they got there or what they had in common or why they were chosen would have been a good subplot.

So anyway here are the spoilers : I had figured this movie out as soon as Ryan gets injected with something and gets stronger and starts to change. I called it in front of my family and I was right.. Most people who are giving the bad reviews didn't watch the scene right after the ending credits which reveals what I was right about.. The whole thing is an experiment to see who can survive and it all revolves around what Ryan gets injected with. All the clues and the maze is just a distraction to wear them down. The experiment is repeated with new subjects until " they " get the results they want. Each new group goes through the same ordeal until one gets injected with the mystery concoction and goes crazy & changes and then that person hunts the new group until someone survives the hunter, then they get ready for " Phase 2 " which I assume there will be a sequel : maybe / maybe not.

Overall I give this movie a 8 to help with the bad ratings but really I'd give it a 6 . It was different and entertaining and kept you guessing. The teens liked it.

If You Build It, They Will Come...
deedee_2000-985-3416351 November 2022
And they will.

The trolls will flock in droves to bash and complain and whine. Some of these reviews are ridiculous. Worst movie ever? I challenge any of those reviewers to sit through the entire screening time of Amityville: Mt. Misery Road. Omg, my eyes were bleeding after that turkey. End of rant.

Escape The Field was a fun, suspenseful new entry into the horror genre by a promising, up and coming director. The plot held my interest and was cohesive which is more than i can say about Amityville: Mt. Misery Road.

So, to sum up. It's not Shakespeare. However, to horror fans, Escape The Field is worth your time. I'm eager to see what comes next from Emerson Moore once he has a little more experience under his belt.

7 out of 10 stars.

What a waste of time.
ed-503-46518311 May 2022
I don't think they had a screenplay for this one. Someone pitched an idea to the right person and got a green light to film this idea.

After watching this film, I expected the film to answer the mystery it set up, but it didn't. It just meandered, and the ending was very unsatisfying. It wasn't deep, didn't suspend my disbelief. It wasn't particularly scary, I never cared about any of the characters, and their dialogue was painfully awkward.

There isn't anything good I can say about the film, except I watched it until the credits rolled and wish I hadn't.

This tries to put a unique twist on films like Escape Room, Saw and Cube but fails
kevin_robbins10 October 2022
Escape the Field (2022) is a Lions Gate Picture that was exclusively released to Peacock. The storyline follows a group of people who mysteriously wake up in a corn field. The cornfield is a maze/puzzle combination the people need to figure out before something in the field kills them. Meanwhile they will try to figure out if any of their last memories can explain how they got here to begin with.

This movie is directed by Emerson Moore in his directorial debut and stars Jordan Claire Robbins (The Umbrella Academy), Theo Rossi (Sons of Anarchy), Shane West (The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen), Tahirah Sharif (The Haunting of Bly Manor) and Elena Juatco (Schitt's Creek).

This movie felt like Escape Room without the cool effects, interesting subplots and unique settings. This picture thought the corn field setting would be creative and creepy but it didn't work. The cast delivers solid performances and tries to carry the movie, but there are no good kills, no quality gore and no real memorable circumstances or scenes. The ending twist isn't as creative as they hoped and there's definitely no need for a sequel.

Overall, this tries to put a unique twist on films like Escape Room, Saw and Cube but fails. I would score this a 3.5-4/10 and recommend skipping it.
