An ok movie

Warning: Spoilers
"Defunct" is one of the best greek productions the latest years. The acting is great, the audio is stellar, in contrast to most Greek movies where you cannot hear the actors talking, but it falls very short in the story department.

The movie takes place in 2011-2012, during the economic crisis, where the grandson of a dead major moves to his grandfather's house, in Papagou, a post-WW2/Civil War suburb which is forgotten in time. There, he tries to make some money, while learning some dirty secrets about his ancestor.

The ending was, unfortunately, very abrupt and we never learn how the protagonist is going to survive, although the majority of the film was his story, with some fragments of grandpa's story.

A movie that stays with you

The movie is well written, well directed and the acting is really good. It depicts in an excellent way how life was (and still is) for Greeks during the economic crisis without having to show homeless poor people starving. The fact that it is full of images that every 30 - 40 year old has from his childhood makes it familiar and cosy. In addition the information given about the civil war and it's repercussions are given in the exact same way as you would get it if you were raised in Greece (scattered fragments of each individual's "truth" now and then during family dinners ). Plus there is a plot twist in the end.

Above all it is a movie that you don't forget and that it stays with you.
