kinda disappointed
BABSBunny2426 November 2019
I've loved Iliza's previous specials, but this one just didn't stand up to the bar I had set for it. I'm all for political jokes, feminist jokes, social commentary, etc (even if I personal disagree with the point being made) when done well but a lot of the material for this set fell flat. Like, some of it was just observances without an actual joke. Idk, it wasn't terrible but not as good as I was expecting.

British man approved
thekarmicnomad22 November 2019
Being a Brit I often cannot get my head around a lot of the US comedians, sometimes because of references but mostly I can't seem to spot the jokes.

Iliza has a very snappy, sharp wit that she backs up with an amazing capacity for vocal skills and a great physicality; managing to contort her body in strange ways and pop poses to increase her satire. OK sometimes she does stagger around the stage making goat noises but even that eventually got endearing.

The material does have a political edge to it and does lean on gender politics. But Iliza is very even with her jokes and put-downs and is not afraid to point out some of the crazy things women do or expect.

Sadly, in a climate where just wandering on stage and declaring that men suck because they earn more than women qualifies as a joke now - Iliza's decision to not be overly anti-man has defecto made her a pro-man comedian in my eyes - a badge that I am sure she doesn't particularly want.

But all that aside the show is very funny and mainly pokes fun at stupid wedding traditions - many that we don't have in the UK but are on Youtube often enough to be relevant.

All in all a very funny show

Brilliant commentary on womanhood in the modern age.
andrewjfarr20 November 2019
I laughed out loud and I'm a sad, bitter person. She is extremely smart, mean and fantastically aware of the absurdity of the human experience.

She is not even real! And yet audience gasped.

Warning: Spoilers
For me, not many punchlines make me laugh in this show, it's funny several times, could get a score of 6.

But it has a lot more to offer (deserve a score of 7). Help us understand what's the right way to be a feminist. Learn the fact that man are visual animal while women are cerebral one.

Watch for yourself, it's a nice show after all.

Hilarious athlete, err, comedian. And
henry-755-95724227 January 2020
She's getting better with age. Each show a spot check on reality through the years. She's 30 something now. Her facial expressions and agile energetic performance are worth watching with sound off. Let me rephrase, one needs to watch the closely. Her presence amplifies the power of the jokes.

In love
SureCommaNot28 November 2019
Iliza is my kind of woman, in so many ways.

If you don't like her other specials, you probably won't be swayed by this. But I love everything she does.

I finally figured out why I didn't love this
heaviestluv22 November 2019
Don't get me wrong it's decent but not her best. It's important that we all be able to laugh at ourselves and this special certainly spends a lot of time pointing out all of the absurd things women tend to do, especially all of the over-the-top wedding related situations we put ourselves and our loved ones through. While I definitely chuckled at some things, I found myself kind of apathetic through most of it.

Finally it hit me why I didn't love it: laughing at ourselves is often the best medicine but in this special the jokes are structured in a way where it seems like Iliza is mostly laughing at "others". Most of her jokes seem to observe other women as the ones behaving absurdly with the implied premise that Iliza herself is an exception to this behavior. It felt a little bit like an hour of her desperately trying to prove what a cool girl she is putting other girls down. Maybe a touch holier-than-thou?

Don't get me wrong, it's a comedy special not a speech to the United Nations. No lasting harm to womanhood is done, no protests will occur and no grudges will be held. It's just a bit one-note and not particularly compelling or nuanced. I found that with topics at hand, I was expecting some more layered, introspective, and self-aware jokes.

I've watched it twice
mooremo3 December 2019
Im surprised there's so many negative reviews on here? I understand where some people are coming from, but I think stand-up comedy is truly a personal preference based on comedian. It's obvious Iliza is not for everyone nor do I think she intends to be.

I enjoyed this special so much I watched it twice. I think people giving negative reviews are not understanding the messaging that's coming through from Iliza. Well I got it and loved it.

Loved her before her ego got the best of her
jlcp-photo22 November 2019
Freezing Hot, War Paint, and Confirmed Kills were awesome. Iliza made some great jokes and they were often layered with her own political/personal views, but it never felt overbearing. I laughed! I rage-quit Elder Millennial and Unveiled because, quite frankly, Iliza has got too big for her boots. She is Ego dressed in tight high-waisted pants. She's not funny any more-she's an angry political stance that doesn't give any air time to jokes, but plenty of time to her own self-indulgent opinions about "a woman's life" in 2019. I'm a feminist and I'm a millennial woman, and somehow Iliza fails to resonate with me at all. Her ego is larger than her ponytail, and-to be honest-her act is getting old.

One of the best comedians out there
dschlatter2 July 2022
I watch a lot of Netflix specials and I don't always understand why or how somd names made it to the top. With Iliza it's very easy: She's got it all. She is an observer, she is smart, she nails physical comedy, she works with her voice... She just delivers the full package. Plus, her comments on society may sting a little (as they should), but they're never gross, crass or truly hurtful.

So far I've liked all her specials. Keep em coming.

"Heterosexual, white girl comedian made me feel icky and uncomfortable, with so much UNFUNNY truth, that it made me sprint home and downvote her special, while keyboard warrioring all over myself, leftist unicorn juice!" #Mermaids #UnicornJuice #TotallyNotBrainDamagedGeneration

New material that feels old
mariellealien19 November 2019
Sure, the material isn't old, but it feels old. It feels overused and while her schtick hasn't changed much over the years, I guess it's just not as on poin as it was? I expected the punchlines, and the voices and the "twists" in her jokes,so I was .. at best, mildly amused, at worst, I started playing candy crush. I guess it's worth watching, but that's the most I can give it.

She is the all American girl! I know most women can relate and laugh but I think it gives guys a peek into female minds. So funny.

Cringe
airborne_trooper20 November 2019
I'll admit that she's not really my style of comedy, but I was bored and gave it a try. Her voice impressions are cringey and some of them go on way too long. There's no real flow to her jokes. It's just one political statement disguised as a joke to the next. Generally I don't have a problem with political jokes, they can be REALLY funny when done right, but when you're just virtue signaling to a favorable crowd that'll applaud anything you say (especially one obviously full of women) it just comes off as preachy and eye rolling.

I'll also admit I was only able to get about 15 minutes in, but that's all I could take.

She is awesome
mariadoloresmolina8 December 2019
Again, most female stand up comedies have worse reviews than men's because MEN DON'T LIKE FEMINIST JOKES. Get over it, guys.

I think Iliza has arrived
Brad_G3525 November 2019
I used to watch Excused and I loved it! Iliza made that show tolerable and hilarious. Because of that show, I always watch Iliza's standup specials. Unfortunately her first four specials just didn't land with me. They had funny moments but cohesively they aren't specials that I ever rewatched.

This special is different. While some of the special focuses on her wedding and the industry, overall it's funny. There were multiple laugh out loud moments where it was impossible to hold back a laugh.

I think part of her charm is that she just doesn't give an eff but she's not obnoxious about it. Excused was a long time ago but as the years have went by her level of just not caring what people think has increased. I think that makes a great comedian.

It'll be interesting to see where Iliza goes after this.

Made some good points
whatithinkis19 November 2019
And sometimes funny and/or ironic BUTTTT delivered with W A A A A Y too much energy. Trying too too hard. At five minutes in I felt exhaustion and annoyance.

Too bad 'cause, as I said, she makes some good points. I just can't stand to watch her.

Another solid special
fischer_patrick15 February 2023
Iliza Shlesinger once again was exceptionally funny in this special for Netflix. Covering topics ranging from weddings, wedding preparations, garters, veils, bachelorette parties, and long standing traditions; the special was a fast paced roller coaster of laughs. Iliza's humor is a often biting send up of adult friendships and relationships. I was really impressed with her intensity throughout. The way she punctuates her jokes with screams at just the right moments reminds me of Sam Kinison. Her use of exaggerated body language and frequently acting out her jokes reminds me of Sebastion Maniscalco. She is a commanding comedic performer and I look forward to watching her other specials. Her humor is definitely more in tune with female life experiences, but her material is relatable enough for everyone. She is my favorite comic out there right now.

Hadn't heard of her until now..
Sjark23 November 2019
And got a big fat downvote from me. 1h 15 minutes, I smiled 6 times, snorted a laugh twice. It lacks edge, and reeks of stuckup moralism. If that's what I wanted, I'd call my parents, not watch a netflix comedy special.

Get off the soap box and tell jokes. Not even funny. Actually quite annoying and I couldn't even get 1/2 way through it.

Worst. Audience. Ever.
emree-tprk10 April 2020
I love iliza, she is always hillarious but that stupid crowd kept cheering and screaming every 10 seconds. It's not a damn town meeting people, how about laughing but not screaming for ONE FUCKING MINUTE. Iliza should have stopped them after a while. I had headache after wathing like 20 min.

Disappointing and out of touch
alexlaurel26 November 2019
I have been a long time fan but could not make it through this special. I was not upset that Iliza was making political commentary, but I was upset that she seemed to be using politically charged statements to judge other women. For example, using feminist political movements to mock other women in ways that didn't make sense but seemed like they were just supposed to ~feel~ true.

Comedy is a very important form of political expression, but this came off as using politically charged yet ill-informed statements just to be edgy. Iliza is smart enough to articulate herself well on her own and I am disappointed that she uses an out-of-touch perspective and Twitter-level understanding of politics to continue to shame other women. Iliza gives pep talks to women about empowering themselves while spending the rest of her time tearing down women's efforts.

Same old shtick overshadows some good points
foghorn_clj24 November 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Look Iliza's good for the occasional laugh but there's 3 big problems in this special

1. She spends the whole time making fun of other people but then tells the audience that's not her intention. Never does she turn her "razor wit" on herself. She seems to be "above it all".

2. She drags out her jokes FAR too long. The Bachelorette bit could've been cut in half and still be just as funny

3. She overuses her "wicked witch" and "screaming banshee" impressions to the point that they become horribly irritating

Honestly, I didn't expect much and was still let down
jonasleaparis23 November 2019
I went into it with an open mind, but I felt like I was just getting yelled at the whole time. I was seeking any sort of humorous substance and I guess some of her sentences mildly amused me, but in the end I felt like I came out of it disappointed and has given more confirmation that female comedians are usually not going to be funny, with a couple of exceptions. I know This might not be a popular opinion because of the gender thing, but honestly, Whitney Cummings, Amy Schumer etc all have the same problems, and this is just like their specials. Take it as you will

Coming Out to Rock Concert Flames? Tells You One Thing:
genious-3541326 November 2019
It's going to be all flash and no content. Beginning with a dog having to be on a stage, wearing a wedding dress in front of a bunch of rabid, screaming sycophants - the same way Oprah's studio audience scream like irrational maniacs was bad enough but the flames and the noise... Is THIS what comedy has become? I will admit, I'm not a huge fan of her but my GOD, it's painfully unfunny. I tried to have an open mind and her opening bit (after pandering and soliciting applause because OH MY GOD! SHE GOT MARRIED!) was amusing: the constant calling of everything 'amazing' by girls. It was good. Then it went downhill fast. I will also admit that I didn't watch the full show - there just becomes a point where you realize you haven't even chuckled in over 15 minutes... what's the point? It's simply not good. Seek out someone who doesn't feel the need to go so bombastic. Maria Bamford. Nikki Glaser. But the hollering of Iliza or Whitney Cummings... I'm never in the mood to have comedy hurled at me.
