The B Side! The B Side, Dude!
cahidi4 August 2022
Warning: Spoilers
This movie reminds me of The Butterfly Effect. Only less dark and more romance. The only way to gain is to lose. You'll understand what I'm saying once you've watched it till the end. Don't worry, it has a happy ending. Even though the road was kinda rough and painful. But the ending makes it worth the wait.

Interesting premise but sooooooo many holes.
mrglenngrant30 June 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Not to blow my own trumpet but I saw the time-travel element coming a mile off - where she's only back for the duration of the song and it's where they first heard it. Guess I've seen too many time-travel movies.

As stated, this is a very cool premise and should have been really good but it's badly handled and could have been fleshed out some more. It was less that 90m long so maybe it should have been a bit longer to put some more meat on the bones a la Butterfly Effect.

The acting was not the best.

Mike from Veep was in it.

Now for the issues ...

Only 5 songs on a side of a tape? For those that remember, it's plenty easy to have 10+ songs on one side.

Can't rewind? Why not flip it over and fast forward?!? Even if this wasn't possible, it wasn't even addressed in the film.

Why was the first song they ever heard together the first song on side B once side A had been "filled up". It seemed like they were making this tape in chronological order.

So I love a good time-travel movie ... but this one was quite disappointing, despite the great idea.

61/100.

A sweet romance with an unexpected twist
danliftman2 July 2022
Press Play is a delightful story of young love. There are reminiscences of The Lake House, a movie I loved. I enjoyed watching the two leads fall in love. The main plot device is unusual and played out in a very enjoyable way. Danny Glover is perfect in his role. The sound track is great. I really liked every song as they were woven into the plot. Press Play made me very happy. It's a fine "date night" film.

Do you remember music cassette?
alessiopriuli30 September 2022
So at the beginning the story is (almost) pretty normal.

Laura,a talented painter,meet Harrison,who's working at a record store.

They fall in love, he teach her how to surf, she shows him her painting.

Pretty normal,right?

BUT.

Even if the movie is (apparently) set in present day, they star to make a mix tape.

Yep,that thing that we born before internet or mp3 used to do on music cassette.

They don't make a spotify playlist or something like that.

Nope, they record songs on a music cassette.

It's kind of weird but nice,i guess?

Well, that the "plot device" that the movie use.

Because when he tragically dies, she discover that when she listen to that mix tape she can travel trough time.

And she can try to save him.

I will not tell you where the movie goes from there, but you should know that it shows how time travel can mess up your ad others lives.

Overall a pretty good movie, not a masterpiece but a nice story with a lot of heart.

middle is slow
SnoopyStyle21 May 2023
Laura (Clara Rugaard) falls for Harrison (Lewis Pullman) who works at a record store. Store owner Cooper (Danny Glover) has put up all the lost mixed tapes on the wall. Harrison makes his own mixed tape for Laura. After a tragedy, Laura discovers that the mixed tape can time travel and she tries to fix history.

The concept is good, but there isn't enough material for a full length movie. The movie is already short and the middle drags. Once the first time travel fails, all the other failures become repetitive. That's the slow part. This is a Twilight Zone episode for about forty minutes. The story needs another layer. The ending is poetic and that saves the movie.

Poor direction is the only thing wrong with this film.
Boristhemoggy24 July 2022
I first saw Clara Rugaard in I am Mother. I thought for her age she turned in a great performance, especially being the only other human in the film except for the fabulous Hilary Swank.

I've not seen her since so when her name was on the credits of this film I decided to give it a go.

The result is that Clara needs a much better director to thrive as an actor. The story is great I love it, but the direction and sound track is appalling. Also I felt that the dialogue for 2 people so much in love was rather weak, and the leading man was a weak actor although that also could be attributed to poor direction.

There was a chance here to make a great film, and allow Dugaard to shine as a great actor, neither happen un fortunately but I gave it a 5 for Dugaard trying hard anyway.

I should make it clear it is still a watchable film and I did enjoy it.

Illogical romantic-like "thing"
gja82230 August 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Have anyone of writters used audio cassettes? Probably, but then they think facts and logic don't matter. Some "teachings" used to make such statements.

To name a few.

If one can play side B, don't you know that this rewinds side A?

The idea of a giveaway to get something eventually is quite religiously popular, there's no doubt in that.

Portable cassette players that automatically stop after each song?

Cassette players time and big smartphones time just four years apart?

After previous songs the main character (and her loved one??? Since he disbelieved her only before an earthquake) remembered perfectly her timeline, but after "side B" she forgets everything just like everyone else did.

Well, all this could have worked out if you didn't care of real world and its rules. Acting is good, music is nice although it could be much more of a character in a film about musical cassette.

But to make this script more logical and realistic is more difficult, I think impossible. Too many keypoints hang on such illogical stuff.

Disappointed
Samidigz_gc22 January 2024
As someone who had a fiance' that died 18 years ago and is still dealing with the pain, I wanted to like this movie so bad. Anyone who has lost a loved one would give anything to have to see them again, even for a moment. I guess I should not have had such high hopes for it.

The premise is cool. Although any old head who had cassettes knows about the B side and how that works.

Aside from that. Idk who the lead girl was but she had the emotional range of a leaf. The guy and girl had no chemistry and it was hard to believe they even fell in love. I know it's a 1.5 hour movie and showing that kind of passionate love could be tricky in a short time frame but it can be done. Plus I was highly distracted by the main guys Adam's apple. That thing did better acting than the two leads.

I wanted more for this movie but it just didn't cut it.

A great movie on the wrong platform and in the wrong category...!
jasmin-885934 July 2022
Warning: Spoilers
This movie was a breath of fresh air compared to the usual Hollywood/Netflix commercial films, especially for something that's pushed on Amazon Prime.

I really believe the bad average review is caused by the fact that people expected this to be something it's not because of bad distribution and marketing choices.

In fact, Press Play is an anomaly on such streaming platform as Prime Video to begin. Why? Because it has much more in common with indie movies such as Red Rocket or Call be by your name than what you'd expect to see there!

In essence, it's the story of two normal teenagers falling in love with each other; one of them die in a tragic accident and the other try to keep on living. We've heard this story 1000 times.

Where this gets interesting is how the film excites our sense of wonder and romance through the very clever use of magic, taking a supposedly standard item, a cassette player, and turning it into a time machine.

It's therefore not much a sci-fi movie as it is a fantastic movie (as in soft-fantasy, not hard fantasy with dragons and wizards), so I don't even know why it says "sci-fi" in the résumé in the first place.

No, this movie doesn't use it's budget to explore crazy quantum theories; No, a lot of things in this movie don't "make sense" (and that's okay, it's wrongly classified as a sci-fi movie anyway!); No, this movie isn't going to fulfill your expectations if you expect time travel to other eras or laser shooting aliens or whatever "hard sci-fi" thing you might think this is going to be.

But what this movie does, it being more human than most. I've read someone who said that the love story was "unmemorable" - I couldn't disagree more.

Characters don't have to be famous, special or idolized for a story to be great. I loved this movie because it's relatable. I loved it because the budget was spent on a perfect cast, gorgeous locations and set design, and just the right amount of VFX, which happens to be very little.

Even the crash scene isn't shown, simply suggested - and it works! It's doing so much with so little : a little cassette player with the mention "auto-rewind" on it (very clever double-entendre considering it's time-machine function in the movie!), a wall of lost and found tapes in a small record shop, some summer love vibes, some hidden symbols in a wall-painting becoming clearer as the film advance; whatever budget this had, they did the right choices and told the best story they could.

The photography direction is absolutely gorgeous as well, with beautiful, bright colour schemes, and a beautiful break from the usual bleak images we see all the time.

We got used to insanely fast-paced scenes with crazy drone sequences and VFX every 2 minutes and dark storylines, so much so that we forgot about the importance of slowing down and watching such movie.

We need more movies like this.

The marketing for this movie is a sin, and I truly believe it would've done so much better had it been marketed to the proper audience, because this is not a sci-fi movie, it's a Big Fish 2.0, NOT a "millennial back to the future"...!

Oh and one last thing : please refrain from telling everyone how you hate the soundtrack. While the songs might not be relevant to you personally, it's not about how good they are but the kind of feelings they evoke (which obviously is subjective anyway). So there's a definite generational gap thing going with the music where this is going to appeal to younger audience.

A mopey love story with a forgettable soundtrack.
joker-423 June 2022
Press Play has a fun set up. Yet it is all a tease.

Director Greg Björkman and co-writer James Bachelor could have played loose and fun with the temporal proceedings and made a Millennial Back To The Future. Laura's tampering with past events could have gotten all dark like The Butterfly Effect. Alas, none of that happens. Instead Laura cries about her lost love following every time jaunt and listens to terribly-forgettable pop-music.

The dialogue, and the situations themselves, become annoyingly repetitive, disconnecting all intrigue and struggle from her quest. Even Danny Glover, whose talents are wasted as the story's wise counselor, has his fortune cookie idioms promptly ignored.

What started out as a clever time travel movie quickly devolves into a mopey first love movie with a mopey soundtrack.

Novice director and writers make a messy mix of familiar copied elements.
movieman6-413-92951022 July 2022
Press Play is a new romantic science fiction film directed and partly written by Greg Björkman. This is only the first film he has directed and written for him.

The film is about Laura (Clara Rugaard), who starts a relationship with Harrison (Lewis Pullman) after they are matched up by their stepsister and best friend. When Harrison dies in a car accident, Laura finds herself in a dark period where she doesn't know how to move on with her life.

Four years after Harrison's death, Laura discovers she can go back in time with the mixtape they made together. She then travels back to the moment where they first heard the songs from the mixtape together. So she tries to inform Harrison and save with the information from the future. This is what she must do before she has played through all the songs on the mixtape and gone through her chances of saving him.

Greg Björkman and his co-writer James Bachelor are both on the novice in the movie world and seem to be inspired by the Back to the Future movies for their first film project. So they put this film in a lesser, but still somewhat similar way. Furthermore, this film also resembles the video game Life is Strange. Because of these comparisons, the movie can quickly come across as predictable to those familiar with these movies or video game.

In addition to the ideas and storylines that the writers have adopted, their own story is a bit on the messy side and lacks, for example, clear explanations about how certain things are possible in the film. The film is also somewhat repetitive due to all the time travel scenes. This can make the film a bit more tedious for older viewers.

Thanks to the rushed pace in the beginning of the film, the relationship between the two main characters also comes across as a bit too rushed and as a viewer you miss real chemistry between the two.

Clara Rugaard, like the writers and director, is also at the beginning of her acting career and because Lewis Pullman is quickly outplayed in the film, she has to keep the film running largely on her own. Unfortunately, she does not always succeed in this very well and sometimes comes forward with a bit of hesitation or stiffness. Fortunately, she sometimes gets help from Danny Glover who delivers the best acting in the film. With a bigger role, he could have helped Laura and the story more to move forward.

Meh
publicemaildump25 June 2022
A slow, indie version of About Time / In Time, and with a stupid and pointless ending. If you haven't, watch those two movies instead.

If watching with a girlfriend, guys you will be bored very quickly, so start grabbing parts of your gf that stick out, and start making out. To sit thru this on a couch would be too much to ask for.

a sugarsweet *100...
ops-5253524 June 2022
Toothclenching lovestory, stealing ideas from ''always'', ''ghost'' and the latest newcomer on the mixtapefront , namely ''mixtape'', even though it happens in the hawaiian surf, at a cool vl record shop, and use danny glover as a filantropic flypaper...it is not the same...also a musical score chosen to sound the love on the infamous mixtape may just interest 5 % of the audience and sounds no kind a reckognition in a grumpy old mans quite music filled memory.

The plot says that the mixtape can reviwe the past, so if you have lost a loved one through the years, it might bite on you, i was just not bitten by this ''no no no'' search and research cryoutloud lovesteemer, i give just a 5 for the thought not so much for the performance.

In the first quarter, completely disgusted
cristian-pataki25 December 2023
Normality! The first twenty seconds of pleasure in a relationship, stereotypes and other nonsense that makes you feel to vomit.

I had the same feeling like watching someone killing a dog to rip open its stomach, eating the intestines.

Normality means the habits of the majority - flags, national anthems, borders, overjoyed to be born somewhere, proud of the team you support, of the street, the neighborhood and the city where you live, super excited about the lack of the education held.

This is what I felt seeing the frequently bad taste ritual of normal people.

I wrote the review because I was away too disgusted. Usually I ignore bad movies, but the beginning of this one was beyond measure.

really good
dollfacecrafter27 October 2022
I Loved this movie, it was touching and sweet, had a bit of sci-fi magic in it and I love stuff like that, super romantic, and yes, to gain you got to lose. The main character did a good job IMO, I liked that they didnt have to go into great details about a lot of things, yes, some plot holes, but a good vibe and good ending. Moral of the story, enjoy the love and life you have, might not get a second chance.

I dont know what else to say, but it is making me write more, lol, so i guess I will think of some more things to say

fyi: very PG-13. Nothing graphic or terrible in this

Her Asian friend is good in this also

Danny Glover is good.

The Universe conspires to give you what you asked for...
katrisharossi27 June 2022
This movie wasn't made just to be made. I believe many people needed to see this film, hence the reason it was created. Maybe for them to appreciate and validate the connection they have currently or have experienced in the past. Maybe this film will finally get someone to realize that the relationship that they're in isn't what's best for them, or just maybe this film was created to get you to believe that love is real and to understand the transformative power that it brings. I absolutely adored this film. The obsession with trying to fix the main problem by somehow trying to cheat him out of death, doesn't work no matter how hard she tries. The minute when she accepts and surrenders the answer comes. Press Play will teach you to value the now and to live in the present moment. It will teach you that we are all literally a decision away from a different life. Can we change fate? Maybe. Can we change our destiny? Maybe. Most importantly, what is meant to be, will always be. This movie shows us to stop, stand still, surrender, and get out of our way. I do believe that souls are constantly striving to find each other. Just the way that these characters were. They believed in love and loved each other in a way that was admirable and pure. My hope for everyone who is reading this review and has the opportunity to watch this movie, go in with an open mind, open heart, and no distractions. Let whatever message that is intended to come to you, do just that. Most importantly, don't stop believing on the love that is meant to find you and be yours. You may not get the opportunity to go back in time they way that she did, however, you'll be wiser for recognizing love and choosing not to let it go.

butterfly effect but in a more romantic tone
hornyguys9 September 2022
I mean there are humongous amounts of plot holes on the travel through time element but.. BUT.. it is still a (kind of) original romantic comedy, with really relative characters and very good acting without any political message that all's s out love through the perspective of 15 and 20 year olds.

Storyline is heavily inspired by the butterfly effect.

Vfx have been used on minimum and very cleverly so there is no distraction from the story

you can relate to the characters and you do actually see their relation growing. The film actually took it's time to make establish their relationship and thus made the second part even harder. The finale was both expected and foreshadowed through the film.

As jeremy would say (i hope) good time no alcohol required. Now i am going to copy and paste all these since amazon believes a review needs to be 600 words minimum and i don't have anything more to say apart of, if you like a classic love story with a hit of time travel you not going to be disappointed..

One of my favorite movies
Lizard111828 October 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I absolutely loved Press Play. I had no idea what the movie was about when I watched it the first time, only that it had Lewis Pullman in it and he's my favorite actor. Time travel and mixtapes were not what I was expecting, but I was pleasantly surprised. I want somebody to make me a mixtape! Anyways...I wish he didn't have to die, but that's ultimately what the movie is about: you can't control what happens, only what you decide to do. When Laura (Clara) realizes she can't save Harrison (Lewis) she finally accepts it tearfully. She then ends up "meeting" him again for the first time and he says "maybe we're soulmates." You will definitely cry watching this by the way! I want a sequel!!

I CAN'T STOP WATCHING
rachaelitch16 May 2023
HOW HAS THIS MOVIE NOT GOTTEN MORE RECOGNITION???

Surprisingly, I watched this movie while throwing up on a cruise ship. But let me tell you, this movie made me forget about all the pain in my stomach. The only pain in my stomach after this movie with the ache for wanting to be in love.

I know that sounds cheesy, but for me to want this feeling of love, is extremely rare for me. And only a select few movies can give me this feeling. This one gave me this feeling within the first 30 minutes.

I'm going to give zero spoilers away because this movie was such an experience and one that I will not be forgetting for the longest time. Go into this movie with zero expectations like I did and you'll be pleasantly surprised. It is different from any romance movie I've ever seen in my life. And everyone that I've shown this movie to recently has been obsessed with it.

If you want your love and adoration for Lewis Pullman to get even higher and bigger, then watch this movie, because holy crap is I in love with him.
