Ça va, Poepie?
Coventry26 April 2020
Since a few years already, I deliberately stopped watching zombie comedies, simply because there are too many of them and the vast majority aren't very funny. Of course, I had to make an exception for the very first zombie splatter comedy produced in my home country Belgium! Admittedly it isn't much better than the rest, but at least it also isn't worse, the cast contains a bunch of familiar faces (if you're from Flanders, that is) and there are a handful of deliciously absurd and grotesque gory sequences, which we really aren't used to seeing in Belgian cinema. Seriously, I'm still surprised this film received funding from the VAF (a Belgian governmental institute that decides which cultural projects receive financial support), since usually only stern and tragic family dramas receive funding.

The set-up is very light-headed. The gorgeous but insecure Alison is on her way to a dubious plastic surgery clinic in a non-specified Eastern European country to get a breast reduction. With her are her surgery-addicted mother Sylvia and her clumsy and geeky boyfriend Michael who spontaneously starts vomiting when he sees blood. At the clinic, things go horribly wrong since the head doctor's experimental rejuvenating serum actually turns people into zombies, and Michael unknowingly lets patient zero escape. What follow is a rundown of typically cliched and derivative zombie situations, while the lead characters get munched in order of obnoxiousness. There are a handful of inventive death sequences, but that is a requirement in every zombie comedy, I suppose. The funniest parts include the OTT Slavic accents used by renowned Belgian actors, and the fact that Alison repeatedly asks "ça va, Poepie?" (roughly translated: "Are you ok, sweetie?") every time when her blundering boyfriend hits his head, trips over his own feet or accidentally injects himself with needles.

PS: yes, that shoddy surgeon operating with extremely loud music in his OR is the world-famous DJ Dimitri Vegas.

Belgian zombie gorefest à la Braindead.
deloudelouvain22 November 2020
In the zombie genre Yummy definitely has its place. There is a lot of gore, a lot of blood and guts spilling out, and the make-up artists did a good job with their creations. As for the story it's just what you could expect when watching a zombie movie, nothing too serious, just endless bloody fun. As a Belgian I was surprised they made a movie like this one. Belgians don't make a lot of movies but when they do it's most of the time good if not excellent, and so is this one, a good fast paced gore movie à la Braindead. Gore and horror is certainly not the kind of movies that gets sponsored in Belgium so it was a nice surprise they gave it a shot. A good movie with unknown but decent actors to me, that is if you like this genre of entertainment.

A fun Zombie Horror
nashw827 March 2021
A young med schools dropout takes his lovely and well endowed girlfriend to a dodgy hospital for a breast reduction but things don't go according to plan. This is a fun zombie horror set in an Eastern European plastic surgery hospital but thats about the extent of it. If you go in expecting nothing more then you'll have fun. Think Dead Snow but set in a hospital and with patient zombies instead of nazi zombies and you'll have a fair idea of what you are getting yourself into. The young male lead and his aversion to blood makes him a fairly useless hero in this situation and so we get something different from your usual lead male heroics. A wide range of characters including the girlfriend, her superficial mother, some creepy doctors and sleazy medical personnel keep things interesting but it still never reaches much higher than can be expected from the premise.

A Belgian zombie movie with a very infectious bite...
paul_haakonsen3 July 2020
Well the movie had 'Facelifsts, boob jobs and zombies' brandished on the cover, that alone was more than enough to catch my attention. Anything even remotely zombiesque and I am there like a gorehound.

I hadn't heard about this Belgian zombie movie from director Lars Damoiseaux before now in 2020, when I was presented with the chance to sit down and watch it. Needless to say, that with my admiration of the zombie genre and craving for gore, that I immediately sat down to watch "Yummy" without any questions asked.

First and foremost, I must say that "Yummy" most definitely put Belgium on the zombie movie map. Without a doubt, because this movie was surprisingly enjoyable and very watchable.

The storyline was good, and actually managed to be original enough to make itself stand out in the sea of zombie movies that are readily available. I particularly liked how writers Lars Damoiseaux and Eveline Hagenbeek managed to incorporate comedy and subtle jabs at today's insane obsession with achieving the perfect look by cosmetic surgery. It was just glorious and worked out so well.

"Yummy" was exactly that; yummy! Well, for a gorehounds perspective - or from a certain point of view if you want to make a pop culture reference to another movie. There was a great amount of blood, gore and mayhem throughout the movie to make even a seasoned horror veteran such as myself happy.

The character gallery in the movie was also good, there was a good mixture of various characters, some stereotypical and archetypical for zombie movies, while others were quite original. And that definitely added a good layer to the movie. And the fact that they had a great cast was certainly also bringing more conviction to the movie.

I enjoyed the cast in the movie, as they were all unfamiliar faces to me. I enjoy watching new faces in movies, as there are no associations to previously portrayed characters in other movies. And the fact that the actors and actresses in "Yummy" were all doing good jobs with their individual roles and characters was just such a good thing.

And on to the good part; the zombies! Yeah, this being a zombie movie, of course there was bound to be zombies. Duh! Now, let me just be the first to applaud the special effects and make-up teams here, because "Yummy" had some very yummy zombies. I mean that in a sarcastic way, of course. The zombies were great in the movie, lots of variation to the individual designs, and the zombie make-up and prosthetics were just great. And as a zombie movie, then having gory effects and realistic gore is a must, and they definitely managed that here. So two rotting thumbs up, way, way up here for the special effects and make-up crews.

"Yummy" was a nice surprise of a movie, and a much welcomed addition to the zombie movie collection. If you haven't already seen this 2019 movie, I strongly and highly recommend that you do so, because this is how you make a good zombie movie.

My rating of "Yummy" receives a very well-deserved seven out of ten stars.

Definitely worth a watch.

One of the better comedic zombie movies to come out lately. Not plagued with the rapid-fire, snarky, annoying dialog that America has been putting out. Fun, well acted, well directed.

Excessive gore does not improve a bland zombie movie
capt_snowflake30 June 2020
Wow, this movie is so abysmally bad, I'm not even sure what to say. It's not shy about the gore, but that's about all it has. There's no plot, just a bunch of people running around getting chased by zombies. The raunchy humor is at roughly the 8th grade level. It's a basic zombie film, like countless others before it, that brings nothing new to the table. Which is sad, considering how great the genre can be. Consider Train to Busan, 28 Days Later or even the low budget Contracted; they took the traditional theme and made it into something fresh and horrifying. If you've seen as many zombie films as I have, Yummy is a snooze fest, a bland clone of so many others.

Zombie outbreak in a less than ethical eastern European cosmetic surgery center... what do you expect?
s-stetsko15 July 2020
To be honest I anticipated less, and got more than I could have possible been led to expect. This movie is actually pretty solid and entertaining. The acting is better than expected, the premise is better than expected, the characters (while flat) are better than expected, and the effects are pretty well done. The humor is generally low brow and bawdy but even that is not too bad for what it is, and the ending is actually pretty good even if somewhat implausible. I picked this flick on a whim expecting a truly trashy zombie romp, and instead found a serious genre zombie comedy that was a good cut above much of what is released all too often now.

If you want good old fashioned zombie gore with some cheap sex jokes, some over the top absurdity, and even a reasonably decent premise to be made into a movie, then you can do much worse than to give this movie an hour and a half of your time.

Started well and got very dry
movie_ape20 October 2020
Not sure about this, it is that odd horror / comedy genre that I feel is very difficult to pull off.

In any case they were close here, some parts were alright but really most of the jokes were on the juvenile side. I think what made this poor however was the lack of any sort of plot direction. I mean if I look at a great zombie film 'World War Z' there is a distinct plot and goal for the protagonist.

This move sets up as a zombie flick but in reality is a slasher movie, one of those really dumbed down ones where the crazies chase the stupid teens around until they all die. Because of that I got bored very fast.

4/10 I think with some work they could achieve better, just add some actual story beats and character details.

It's alright but certainly not among the best
Jerghal25 December 2019
The movie is pretty much what I expected: a horror movie that doesn't take itself too seriously. There is humor in it that works most of the time. Though for a horror movie it's actually not that explicit: real gore is off camera mostly, you actually don't see that much. At a certain moment a head is bashed in with a fire extinguisher, but you only see the blood splatter, not the head being bashed in. They should have gone the 'braindead/dead alive' route with much over the top gore, that would add to the comedy and make it funnier. The 90 minutes go by smoothly and it's a decent watch but don't expect it to be a horror classic.

Could have been decent with a better script
sshs7213 July 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Main review is that it's a mildly passable gore fest zombie flick that holds your attention for a few minutes but then the writing issues got in the way for me and I kept having to pause just rub my temples at how annoying it was. If the issues below weren't there, I'd have probably given a 6.

The average "great" guy with the beautiful, insecure, big-breasted, vain girlfriend soon turns into a complete loser that constantly bangs his head on things, knocks himself out, faints or pukes and can't even open a door. And the girlfriend naturally begins to degrade him and overcome the situation despite her sudden loser boyfriend and not because she does anything great but just because she now looks great in comparison. That get old quickly.

Minor characters that get saved from a tense situation one minute are immediately killed right off. By the end, I was pulling for everyone to die.

Spoiler part here: they all did die and even the way that happened was so completely unsatisfying.

I really enjoyed it. I have seen a lot of zombie movies, but this is totally different. A comedy, horror and lots and lots of goor. Loved it. This is the first time that I nearly puked, the scene with the liposuction, the idea of returning the fat to to the body, gross !

Is there still life left in the undead?
pseawrig12 July 2020
When I sat down to watch this movie, I thought that surely by now the zombie cycle has completely played out. There can't be even the faintest possibility that a zombie movie will do anything new. After all, every possible zombie manifestation, zombie situation, and zombie kill has been thoroughly explored, repeated, and exhausted. Even, I thought to myself, every ounce of zombie related black humor has been squeezed from the genre, so that there is absolutely nothing left to be done with it.

After watching this movie, I now know that I was right.

More like Yikes
kosmasp16 August 2020
Suspending your disbelief is one thing (it's zombies for crying out loud), not caring about cliches another. Also apart from this being horror it also is a comedy. A mixture that doesn't sit well with some people. So if you have a problem with that, don't even bother to watch this.

Otherwise it is a fun watch, with plenty of blood and some nudity too. It is silly and it does delve into cliches from time to time. But it's just here to entertain and let you have fun. Relax, sit back and enjoy it

Lars Damoiseaux is on my blacklist
bradley-g-lang3 September 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Never again will I allow myself to be insulted by this twerp.

The boyfriend character was killed off early, which I thought was a strange move. But he was definitely, completely, undoubtedly dead. Brain dead, no life, wide staring eyes. Yep, dead as a door nail. But of course he wasn't. He spontaneously comes back to life with no medical intervention. Not as a zombie; just a regular guy with a sore head.

Then throughout the rest of the film, any character with even the most slightly interesting character arc gets killed off. Even our two leads in the very final scene. After they've escaped the zombie carnage.

So f you Lars. What a waste. You've sullied the entire Belgian film industry.

She is a danger to us all
nogodnomasters30 October 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Alison (Maaike Neuville ) is going to a run down Eastern European hospital that does free abortions and uses experimental treatments. She wants a breast reduction. It looked better on the Internet. Michael (Bart Hollanders) discovers a topless woman (Camille Vanlerberghe) tied up who has her mouth restrained. Michael does what he thinks is right and viola! we have an infected hospital as a small group of folks play run and hide from zombies. Bad News. If you go outside the cops shoot to kill everything.

The plot was typical, ending slightly different. The blood and gore effects were excellent. Bright red blood splattering everywhere.

Guide: F-word. Attempted rape. Nudity (Camille Vanlerberghe , Cindy Derenette )

Peter Jackson did it better - more gore than story - valiant effort, nevertheless - just have to numb your brain for this

Entertaining - Watchable
ggcarbone20 June 2021
It is a good zombie movie, the production is good, the acting is acceptable, the gore scenes are very impressible and very realistic, much better than some Hollywood movies. What I didn't like and the reason I don't rate this movie 8 is because the unnecessary scenes of comedy, if you produce a horror/comedy movie you have to make sure it works throughout the movie (like Zombieland, Scout Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse etc), that bits of comedy ruined the movie, because it is a serious and nice zombie movie but getting rid of those unnecessary comedy could make this movie even better, it is like the director's sons wrote in those part of the plot. Congratulations to Belgium producers, it is a watchable movie for a raining weekend.

The car that crushes a dead animal on the start: PATHETIC.. The hot girl with the lame boyfriend: PATHETIC!! The boyfriend who gets crushed by the girlfriend after that much struggle at the end of the movie: SUPER LAME!!! overall the lamest movie ever.. Thank you for wasting my time

Very enjoyable
peterrradkov-549452 July 2020
I enjoy watching movies of this genre, and it was quite a pleasure to come across this gem. The plot is interesting and has its many brilliant moments, camerawork and CG are good, acting is also excellent, as well as the eastern European setting in its concrete grittiness and music - aah the music is also brilliant and quite on pont - not sure if its Macedonian, or Bulgarian - but quite on point. All in all - very enjoyable movie - Kudos! Will watch again.

So so zombie flick
tvcarsd26 August 2020
Personally I'm finding it very difficult to find a really enjoyable movie made in 2019 as they are all too cliche. Yummy has is just so bland. Boobs and blood are pretty much the high and low of this zombie flick, I don't think there was actually a truly amusing moment. None of the actors were in any way funny.

Die Hard: not the Zombies but Michael
samleejb30 October 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Into the first hour of the movie, I had to scroll down for the timeline wondering how much more of the dragging.

Plot is simple, get a few sexy faces and breast and topless and that's all....wait, don't forget to write about a "main" character who turned out to be so clumsy whom so bad at everything including getting himself killed at the end.

Throughout the film, zombies never the concern, I was busy waiting for scene on Michael. "Is he next?"; "so that's what electric shock one self looks like"; "Is he going to kill himself, again?".....

Gist of the movie: don't do breast reduction and most importantly, dump that laughable boyfriend and lastly learn how to make a bomb that will only creates blast through walls but leaving leaving creatures unharmed.

Delivers what you would expect. Worth a watch.
frankblack-7996115 August 2020
Decent little zombie flick. Not the best, but certainly not the worst by a long shot. You get a good dose of zombie gore and all that goes with it. In a small way it reminded of Dead Alive. Just way darker in charachters and ending. I would recommend it to any who enjoy rip'em up zombie flicks.

Silly but entertaining
jmerlino28 October 2020
This movie is a primer on why you should never get your breasts reduced.

No seriously, this movie is your basic zombie movie set in a semi-sketchy clinic in an unspecified eastern European country.

There are a few of fun kills and some well-rendered suspenseful sequences, but basically, there's nothing here you haven't seen before. It's free on Shudder right now, so if you're a subscriber, it won't cost you anything to watch. That's good. If you've got a couple of hours to kill, watch it. Don't pay to watch it.

And never make your boobs smaller. You'll just end up initiating a zombie apocalypse, and ruining the fun for everyone.
