Better Than Expected
Supermanfan-1325 September 2023
I had huge reservations about watching Power Book II: Ghost because (like everyone else) I hated Tariq's character on Power. I even started off with a low rating at first in Season 1 but the more I watched the more I came to really like show. I just finished Season 3 and found myself really enjoying the show a lot more than I thought I would, to the point where I was looking forward to the next episode. This is not the same Tariq from the original Power, he's becoming much more like his dad and you go from hating this kid to actually rooting for him. I can't remember a show where I hated someone so much to actually rooting for him like I have Tariq. I'll still never get over what he did to his dad but this is a new show that's beautifully written.

Glad I gave this a chance

Power Book II: Ghost was not close to what I was expecting. I thought it was a terrible idea when I heard they were giving him his own show. I wasn't even going to watch it but since I'm such a huge fan of the original and most of the fans were recommending it I thought what the heck. I'm so glad I did give it a chance because I enjoyed it so much that I binged all three seasons in just a couple weeks. Like most I hated Tariq from his time on the original Power. But this is not the same Tariq from that show, you'll actually find yourself liking him more and more as the show goes on. Like the original Power some of the story lines are a little far fetched but you'll still have fun watching it. Obviously if you're a fan of the original Power then you should definitely give this a chance. Even though this isn't as good as Power, chances are you'll come to enjoy this a lot. I've actually enjoyed all three spinoffs more than I wi would and looking forward to more seasons of all them in the future.

Meh!

Warning: Spoilers
I watched every episode and I must say, it got better towards the end. I am a true "Power" fan. I can't for the life of me understand how you would get rid of the GREAT characters and leave us with folks like Stacks (who should have been killed in "Power"). The two professors are absolutely HORRIBLE! Their storyline makes no sense and bring nothing to show. If anything, keep the guy professor and make his storyline about trying to use Tariq for his book. Instead, he dislikes Tariq for no real reason, he comes of as a stalker when it comes to the female professor. The female professor sleeping with the student basketball player is stupid. Especially since she gave the other professor shytt for doing the same thing. The unecessary sex scenes added absolutely nothing. And what professor in their right mind where's a dress with slits up to the crotch and cut outs in the waist to work??????

I love Monet and her family's storyline. That was a good addition. The best part of this show was the return of Tommy!

Give it a shot

"I'm nothing like my father."

Power Book 2: Ghost was created by Courtney Kemp and 50 Cent and stars Michael Rainey Jr, Mary J Blige, Gianni Paolo, Paige Hurd, Woody McClain, Latoya Tonodeo, Method Man, Alix Lapri, Lovell Adams Gray and Larenz Tate.

Tariq St Patrick has to grapple with his new world order. His father "Ghost" is dead and he pulled the trigger. On his own for the first time Tariq is forced to balance his college life, family affairs, drug operations and love life. Tariq soon realizes that the only way to avoid the same fate his father met is to become him, only better.

Lead actor Michael Rainey Jr went on record saying when he first heard he was getting his own spin off series that he didn't see how it would work and said that the Tariq character at the time seemed unredeemable. Lucky for him he was able to prove himself wrong and everyone else because this went on to become the most popular show currently airing on Starz and has consistently broken viewership records for them. Academy Award Nominee Mary J Blige stars as Monet Tejada a ruthless Queenpin who heads up the Tejada family which consists of her kids Cane, Dru and Diana and who Tariq finds himself entangled with. Aside from him they are probably the second biggest focus on the show.

In terms of performances I'd say Woody McClain does a great job playing the hothead character Cane here. The real standout and true revelation for me is Michael Rainey Jr as Tariq here. It's not easy to go from a supporting actor in someone else's show to leading your own not everyone can pull it off but he does seamlessly. He does a great job here and because of the writing and his performance you'll find yourself rooting for him. Each season of this show seems to get better than the last in my opinion with one being the weakest, season 2 being a significant improvement and season 3 which was helmed by new showrunner Brett Mahoney after Courtney Kemp left to make original content for Netflix being the best so far.

Season 4 started filming January of this year and added Michael Ealy to the cast. Luckily it managed to finish filming before the current actors strike. With any luck we'll get Season 4 in early 2024. Wish we could get it sooner after the cliffhanger Season 3 left us on.

One Thing Is Clear
acornelius-2404621 December 2021
This is a great show, and even the early on haters couldn't bring it down. The show is very suspenseful and keeps you wanting to know what happens next. Yes we know the actions or fighting abilities of a teenager won't be as "perfect" as his 40 year old father, but give the show a chance if you liked the original Power and you won't be disappointed.

One thing is certainly clear though, a lot of ratings here were given prior to them really giving the show a chance (look at the dates the reviews were written) to get started and find it's legs. It doesn't matter because I know sensible people don't hold reviews in high regard when its clear you're judging the show harshly because you dislike a character from a prior show, or you're mad your favorite character from the last show is gone. Get over it, and judge this show based off of the content on THIS show.

Why though?!
Ashitaka13720 September 2020
Warning: Spoilers
They should have made a spin-off about how younger Ghost and Tommy got to the top; or about Tommy in L. A. Tariq is not really a likable character; the kid got his sister killed, he killed his father, and got his mother locked up; his little sister and grandmother better watch out!

Decent plot... But no one likes Tariq.

Would be much better if Tommy was the main character.

Hesitant at first but it grew during the episodes and I got stuck. Unfair comparing it with power. Good watch, I'm looking forward to season 2.

Where is Tommy?
missybully5 October 2020
Will Tommy be showing back up in any of these episodes? I believe Tommy should come In and be some part of the last episodes and either saves tariq from going to jail or helps Tasha save him if he does go to jail since Saxe and Davis have agreed to put him on the stand and get Tariq into a situation of admitting he killed his father. I do feel like some of these sex scenes are a bit much and causes the show to lose sight of what it started out about and where it came from and most scenes are just irrelevant at all. But at the same time it is interesting to see who ends up having sex with who and who gets caught. I have been a huge fan of Power from the beginning and will continue to watch cuz Power Book Two has kept me on the edge to find out what happens next.

It's okay to give it a chance
gladysmutie11 August 2023
I have avoided watching Book II for so long because of negative feedback/reviews. Luckily, I found my brother watching it and I was immediately captivated. I expected some teenager stuff and I was proved wrong. Every character is perfectly written, all the way from Tariq, Monet, Cane, Davis and even Dru. The supporting cast is also quite memorable. The story doesn't get boring; you're constantly on the edge wondering what will happen next. Honestly, I binged seasons 1 to 3 in 2 days. The show most definitely lives up to it's predecessor. Honestly, I'm surprised at the comments about the show being about Tariq just because he killed Ghost. It's okay to give him a chance. And the show.

I am hopeful!
jnese1727 September 2020
I loved Power until the last season and even then I was sad to see it end. I was apprehensive about a spin off show. I was mainly concerned because it seemed all the supporting actors would now be main characters in this new story. I was right about my concerns.

The show is dragging on and there is a lot of fluff to fill the time. The entire storyline about Tariq's college courses and the two teachers is dumb and totally unnecessary. There is a lot of dialogue and not a lot of action. I find myself bored during the show and wondering how much more time is left on the show. I keep hoping the show picks up and becomes as good as Power was.

Tariq as main character......please
pjhynes-378-109099 September 2020
Where to start, why would you take the most unlikable, unrelatable and annoying character in the whole show and base the new show on is beyond me. I was a massive fan of Power but this spinoff is hard going and barely got through the first episode. Why not base a show on Tommy and Ghost as kids becoming king pin drug dealers......

Spinoff based on two of the most annoying characters on television ?!?
sumtim3s00n9 September 2020
People dislike Tariq who is certainly a class in itself but I find Tasha even more annoying, there is no end to her nagging and complaining. Writers dont even bother writing good interesting characters, they keep creating drama by characters constantly fighting with everyone and complaining about everything. Plus, this show is trying to be progressive and supportive of african americans yets glorifies and romanticizes drug dealing and murder and not to mention is trying to create a even bigger chasm between races. The dialogue (not really a spoiler) Tariq has with that girl , who tells him how only a few af-americans are "hardcore" agenda driven and "loud" and have no problem basically crying wolf is demeaning and depressive really. The original Power at least was about something, Ghost's redemption, trying to do better and teach Tariq about his mistakes. Sure it had like a million lame artificially created dramatic conflicts but it wasnt bad. This is. Its basically about drugs, how to cheat at school, how to avoid murder but at the same time ironically claiming oppression and BLM. You cant have a african american kid doing all the stereotypical things but at the same time him crying racism at every step. Its ridiculous.

ignore the bad reviews
mikeoliver210630 August 2021
People are hating on this because they didn't like Tariq in the original power or because they expected this to be the same show as a continuation.

The show is actually quite good, the new characters are quite good too. Got much better as the season went on and after 10 episodes it was well worth being renewed for a second season.

I give respect where it's due
tishaunharmon3 January 2021
The writers here are the first people I have to give credit too. At first I was like many other ppl wondering what could come of Tariqs character but as I watched Courtney Kemp explain at the end this was a coming of age story for Tariq. I have found Tariq to be one of the most intellectual characters written in this story and I love it. Many young black males are not portrayed in shows or books to have it all and here shows he's a mastermind. He is his fathers child and so with that being said I felt for him at times and at times I couldn't stand him either which helps display that he's a very diverse and complex character. So what he says at the end at the gravesite was "ghosts, never die", this reads as if he will forever be haunted by the lifestyle of his family and he will go to the ends of this earth protecting the ppl he loves even if he has to kill to do it. Congratulations on a superb story! May the Power franchise live on.

Don't listen to the negative reviews
mwb1911 January 2021
If you were a fan of Power you will love this.

Don't understand the negative reviews at all.

Should have been on Netflix or main stream television.

Excellent show, great story, good acting. Everything the original had and more.

Cannot understand why there are so many negative reviews at all!

Looking forward to the next season already.

10/10 to boost the low rating cause its undeserved
elhamfirmino13 January 2021
I don't know where the low ratings come from. I guess those come from the audience that never seen the OG Series before or just hate the fact that Tariq is the main protagonist in this series here. I'd give it a 8/10, but because of the low ratings which put offs people from watching it, I gave it a 10.

The drama continues in a good direction. Tbf I didnt liked the end of the OG series, but it pathed a way for Book II. There are many brand new characters with intrigues and intentions which threads in the story. I like the college area and all around, but the thing with the app for private tutor by Tariq with " gifts " is just unrealistic and stupid. This is a minor critic.

Some characters are not necessary and still have screen time, this could be another reason for dislikes, but even though those side stories are irrelevant they could all meet at one point and make a thrilling story.

I liked some new actors Paige Hurd, Melanie Liburd, Woody McClain, such as the the more famous likes of Mary J Blige & Method Man.

To sum it up: If you haven't watched Power the OG series or if you didn't like Power at all then Power Book II is nothing for you.

Tommy's character can save Power, even without Ghost.
DjCharliiOne14 June 2021
I am a massive die hard fan of Power but book 11 seemed people missed Tommy and Ghost all over the show.

The kid is being hated of being a main character and all, but he was trying to prove something in here😂😂

He always lame, and thats how he is.

True, unnecessary sex to uni college professors was not that fun,

Monnet family is dope. Love what mary j blidge did what she done. All of the family is perfect.

All in all, the kid story needs to up the game, and Tommy needs to boost things up to the coming season.
