Why are you guys hating? I gave the show & Amy a fair shake, and I was pleasantly surprised!
orcinussr19 March 2022
Seriously is it your expectations were high and so you were disappointed? Or in a bad head space when you watched and couldn't get into it? Honestly idk how anyone could give this less than, say, a 6, by any metric - I don't understand people :/

Slow Start, but It Gets Better
chron25 March 2022
I like some, but not all of Amy Schumer's past material. While I am not a super-fan, I appreciate that she can push the edge and I always respect that even if it doesn't appeal. I thought this would be worth a look.

It didn't start well. I almost bailed during the first episode. None of the characters were likeable. There didn't seem to be any chemistry among the cast. It was just awkward. They hooked me at the end of the first episode, so we decided to keep going.

It takes a couple of episodes, but it gains momentum. The cast and crew start to get a working flow, and the story line moves between broad humor and serious issues.

It is worth watching, but you will have to be patient with it.

It incredibly honest and you can feel it
cindyrellaexists20 March 2022
Although I don't relate to the situations at all I felt them. This is a very honest and raw experience and it was superbly delivered. The characters were perfect and it's as if you really got to know them. The pain and joy were so authentic and written perfectly. What a nice series!

Much more mature and heartfelt than her other stuff. Worth a watch
the_hawk822 March 2022
I am confused by the dumpster fire of reviews here. I am convinced the crap reviews are from people that just hate Amy Schumer and didn't watch.

This show is much more mature and heartfelt than some of her other entries. Of course you have to like her style, but if you do you will like this show. There is a good mix of outright laughs, sadness, and some toned down comedy. It's worth a watch.

In Love With This Show

I'm not an Amy Shumer fan, but I absolutely love this show.

It's touching, funny and witty and I identify with Beth in so many ways.

Highly recommend it.

Not a 1 or a 10

Like everything else it's in-between. Not super funny but it is humorous at times. It's more thought provoking than funny. The first episode was a bummer until the end and now each episode has proved to move the story along nicely and you can connect with Beth. It's doing what I hoped, make me watch the next episode.

5.5 seriously you guys?

I get ppl might be over Amy, but damn if this show isn't perfect in almost every way. I was laughing so hard my mom had to come in to see what show I was watching. It's rather touching too. Really a perfect vehicle for Amy's return, and I for one am loving it. I am a single, white, 40 y/o female, so I'm assuming I am the target demographic, but yeah, I love it.

Weirdly captivating
nateday5520 March 2022
A really sweet exploration of grief in a complicated relationship, as well as a look into happiness, all anchored by some creative writing from Schumer and a darker and more muted performance than she usually gives.

Nicely done Amy Schumer. I love this show.
anderbilt18 March 2022
It was a pleasure to discover this series freshly released on Hulu at Midnight last night. I found it early this morning and am binging the final couple of episodes. Wow.

"Life & Beth" is a fresh take on the "awfulness" comedy pioneered by Seinfeld, and sewn into some of the finest dramas of the past two decades. This show is outstanding, in the way that the characters sail full-steam through each others' turbulent wake, yet fight to keep each other upright and moving.

Also outstanding: Ms Schumer herself in this role. I personally come at this as a longtime fan of Schumer's comedy, in all of its outrageous cycles. Here her persona is superbly matched to the material, with an excellent supporting cast all around.

It has been a somewhat bleak season for new shows from the streaming services. Do see this.

I liked the younger versions story line
Meeka_Meek20 March 2022
Warning: Spoilers
*update after season 2* It's worse than the first and literally an auto biography of Amy Schumer's real life. They should have just named the show Life & Amy. It felt super rushed for no reason. There was some funny parts of course but they, again come from Amy's - I mean Beth's circle of friends. Will I watch a 3rd season...? Maybe if there's nothing else on

I like when shows portray the upbringing of the current characters so we can delve into why they are the way they are while seeing how they turned out. Beth's sister is adorable as an adult and the scene where she was swimming with the fish she caught was heartwarming. Michal Rappaport did well in his role and brought a bit of charm to the show and I loved all her friends and representation of thier love lives as well. What I can't understand is how in every Amy Schumer drama she has some well to do man obsessing over her even though she is crass and un lady like. It's unrealistic to me how a woman like that can jump from guy to guy to guy and always end up with a good man despite lacking better personality traits. Don't get me wrong I really do like Amy Schumer but I am tired of her terrible characters. I also don't understand the casting of Michael Cera as he doesn't give me the ranch hand vibe and there is no genuine connection between him and Amy in my opinion. All in all I liked the show but I don't see where it can go from here.

What a slogfest
mcockrell-8789324 April 2022
Typical Amy Schumer jokes that were fresh 10 years ago. All the humor seems forced or is blatantly obvious. The storyline is as uninteresting as it is unfunny. The entire 10 season story could have been told in 2 episodes. Skip it and try to find something that's actually entertaining.

Don't read the haterade reviews..show funny af!
jgathings-9576119 March 2022
Amy will always have her "review hit squad" which is creepy to go after someone that hard that you don't even know or have ever met. I mean they act like she ran over a bunch of children or something..anyways, show is funny as hell if you like the "Louie" style self-deprecating humor. I gave it a 10/10 just because it's such a rare occasion for a TV show to ACTUALLY make me laugh out loud. And she gets extra props for bringing us back some Michael Cera.

I'm not a big Fan of Amy's work but I enjoyed this series. The supporting cast really was the highlight for me. Wouldn't mind a season 2 but I feel like this will be a one and done.

Knock off of Somebody Somewhere
tyndaris30 January 2023
Seriously, watch Somebody Somewhere with Bridget Everett. This show feels like a cheap knockoff of her show, they even have some of the same actors. But Somebody Somewhere is thoughtful, hopeful, inspirational, and realistic, and this isn't any of those things.

This show is disappointing, the jokes don't land if they are even jokes, it just feels like a pity party for someone who's life is pretty good but they want more without having to do anything to get more. I keep trying to watch all of Amy's stuff, everything in my head says I'm her key demographic, middle class white women, almost same age, weight issues, inappropriate, sex positive, so many similarities but none of the jokes landed.

I will say this show has a lot more famous people, it's quite the list of guest stars. It's like the one time I ordered Oyster Rockefeller from a restaurant and they covered it in sauce and after digging in I find they also breaded and fried the oysters which had turned out to have gone bad. Lots of extra stuff to make it feel like it should be great, but it's rotted at the core.

A FUNNY, WITTY HEARTFELT SERIES
leidilat23 March 2022
Wow!!! I'm so glad I stumbled across this show. I've been feeling very sick the last few days and I was looking for a distraction. This show was my own personal Vicodin and helped me forget my stomach pain for awhile. I smiled, I laughed and even teared up. The show is well written, directed and perfectly cast. IT'S A MUST SEE SHOW!!!

The dryness of life we all feel
KaseyB1217 April 2022
It's not a comedy but you'll get some laughs for sure. Don't go in with the expectation of light-heartedness. There's heaviness in the story but nothing we've not all experienced in our lives. Probably better suited to people in their late 30's/early 40's - I don't know that a younger audience would get it...necessarily. In my late 30's, I feel the same way as Beth. There's a layer of general disappointment. I thought by now, I'd have it all together. The big house, the kids, the husband...I got the husband...but he didn't want kids...I've switched careers plenty and still don't know where I'm going with that. I don't have that many friends - the few I keep, I am glad for but we rarely have time to just hang out. My husband is very much like John...doesn't understand social cues or whispering...but he's a solid piece of art and beauty that I can't get enough of. I've done a lot to adapt to his quirks as he has done for me. I cried at certain points, it makes you think of things that's happened to you...it makes you wish you had a better relationship with your parents but it also understands how that's not possible all the time. We all do the best we can. We all start life with a lot of hope. Kind of like a balloon that's inflated fully and looking shiny and beautiful...sparking so much joy...then the air starts to leak out of it over time and it becomes less and less bouncy...eventually...you'll need to pop that balloon...toss it out and in all your fragility with your lungs full of soot, you blow up a new balloon slowly and it's a struggle to get it to be as full as the first balloon. There are things that are behind you and uncertainty lays before you...you just have to take it one tiny moment at a time. I love the the kids running joyfully past the ceremony...looking like Beth and her sister...they are just starting their path and the "balloon" is super bouncy!

A Different Amy
descriptive_wall19 March 2022
People are so quick to judge Amy Schumer. Give her a chance. People evolve and grow. This isn't her usual material. I don't think I've seen this side of her. It's serious and somber mixed with dark dry humor. It seems more adult.

So for those wondering, its really *not* her usual raunchy shenanigans. It's a woman dealing with life's various traumas, with a different sense of humor.

Rule of 3
seanreilly8331 March 2022
Always give a show at least 3 episodes before you give up on it. Just like Sense 8 and Dark, the first two episodes sucked but it gets good in the second half of the third. No coincidence that's when Michael Cera shows up. I was so ready to give up and then not only did it good, it got addictive. The chemistry between him and Beth (Amy) is great and now I don't want it to end because the story got interesting and it makes me laugh out loud.

I prefer dramatic Amy.
alliebeauballie29 February 2024
Her comedy can be hilarious, over the top crass, and empowering. I find her softer and more real self, her director and revelatory self fascinating and highly entertaining. She has done a great job with this series and I hope we get to see more. I only knew little bits about her personal life previously, so I don't really know which parts are true and which are dramatic license, but I can see the humanity in all of it. Just having a person who looks like A PERSON with REAL PEOPLE PROBLEMS being an actor is so refreshing. I just tried to watch Nicole Kidman in a new thing and had to shut it off, even though her acting is always amazing, because I could not look at the clay mold face. I appreciate real and raw.

Good!
sewgarden21 March 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I appreciate that most people in the show looked like every day people. Not an expensively and unrealistically glammed up version of people.

I also appreciated that John and Beth's relationship wasn't supremely romantic and extreme. It mimics real people meeting in real life and it isn't perfect.

I liked that Beth took the courage to talk with Liz but they didn't become friends again. It made it more about the apology and bring vulnerable even if someone ultimately (and gently) rejects your offer of friendship.

Is it possible to rate zero?
chaucercampbell21 March 2022
I'm neither a fan nor a critic of Amy. But dear God this is boring. And so depressing. I'm on episode 3 and I'm going to grant myself leniency now and find something else to watch. Anything else. Who needs this in early 2022? Nobody. Nobody on God's green earth.

I enjoyed this show. It actually made me laugh out loud at times, which takes a lot! It's refreshing and well acted. It's a welcome change of pace for Amy who plays a more realistic character. It's charming and enjoyable.

There's a lot to unpack here...
dawsonindallas21 March 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Life & Beth is a wonderfully nuanced character drama about a woman who is very clearly disappointed with her comfortable life. Without calling her privileged, Beth doesn't seem to work very hard to retain what she has: a committed boyfriend who tries too hard, a quality well-paying job, and a life of ease and convenience. Instigated by the death of her mother and the waves of grief begetting a new sink or swim instinct, Beth begins to take stock of her life and what she really wants from it... by reminiscing on what motivated her as a young girl when life seemed to be simpler.

These moments of clarity come due to the numerous cringeworthy details surrounding Beth and quite frankly, are the most relatable aspects of this show for anyone who hasn't lost a parent. As easy as Beth's life is now, it wasn't always. But she got through it to arrive at where the shoe opens, and she'll use those lessons to propel herself away to where she wants needs to be.

A postmodern take on grief and how much life can let us down, and how we can let ourselves down, Schumer shines in a quiet role of an emotionally stunted and stunned woman in the midst an autumnal awakening.

Truth above all, I wasn't sold on this show until the flash mob scene and watching Schumer as Beth react to her boyfriend's problematic and horrifying proposal. This will stay on my watchlist.

Also, never thought I'd say this, but this is the first time I've ever found Michael Cera attractive. He can barely grow that beard, but it kind of works for him.

Uh, Okay..

Warning: Spoilers
This show actually started out funny for the first few episdoes but abruptly changed the tone. Its almost like a second team of writers came in. The show spirals out of control into a twist that ends up a non-twist and just general goofiness. I dont know what this was. Pass.

Watch All Ten Episodes
rtailor-0490121 March 2022
You have to give this a chance. It starts off very quirky (too quirky in my opinion but it's Amy afterall) but when it sinks its teeth into the meat of the story, it is brilliant. I always think Amy does better when she is playing a dramatic role as opposed to her comedic ones. Yes she is bravely funny but she makes you believe the painful scenes. It does tell a story and done so well. You have to pay attention because it makes sense in the end. Also, you have to watch it for Michael Cera. He was amazing in it. Talk about stealing the show.
