sweet Tony
SnoopyStyle16 September 2021
Sid Straw (Tony Hale) is a bit of an awkward loser but he tries really hard. He gets appointed co-chair of his college reunion and is told to get on Facebook in order to do the organizing. He's clueless to social media as well as many other things. He is delighted to see former college acquaintance Elizabeth Banks there and starts posting on her fan page. Only the postings are public and her agent Frankie grows tired of his persistence. Frankie files a restraining order on Sid and his life spirals down the drain.

Sid is awkward and clueless. Tony Hale does sell it for all it's worth. He keeps the character from devolving into anger or creepy. I wouldn't say that this is terribly funny but it does become touching around the middle. As his life degenerates, his sadness becomes quite compelling and very endearing. It's an improvement over his cringy cluelessness to his loserdom. By the middle, he's more self-aware. There is a sweetness to Sid and it's all down to Tony Hale.

Surprisingly entertaining. It's like one of those films you can't look away and each moments gets more and more awkward. Worth the watch and has a lot of funny moments.

Spiritual winner

It's a movie sent a message that loser is a relatively term. Sid looks like a dump loser and act weird in some way but he wins a lot in his life indeed. It's a story and fake but kinda inspired many of normal people that attitude matters. Funny movie also.

Eat Wheaties! And watch this movie!
vchimpanzee10 September 2023
Okay, I don't know whether I've ever eaten Wheaties and don't know whether they're any good. I'm not a jock and never cared for sports. I'm a lot like Sid.

Tom Hale never comes across as a stalker. He is quite appealing and has a positive attitude no matter what. Well, almost. At one point he finds it hard to go on. He is really believable as someone who could have been the friend of Elizabeth Banks before she became a celebrity. And his explanation of how he knows her, the one actual people hear, is very well done. But he just keeps doing the wrong thing without realizing it. And yet somehow he had a successful career. After all, he seems to know what he's doing and has confidence whether he should or not. I won't say exactly why I think he was a success, but he did have an office and a secretary.

At least I think he had a secretary. Sarah Goldberg (how many Sarahs did this movie have? Three actresses and one character!) had a brief but memorable role. Hoe DID she get this job? She's never shown working except when she delivers an envelope to Sid and even then it's like, "Why am I the one doing this? I shouldn't have to do ANY work. I'm special." But maybe what she's doing on her cell phone is work-related. And my description of her was longer than all her lines put together.

Sarah number two was Becky number two in "Roseanne" and then played a different character on that show. I've seen her in a couple of other roles. But I liked her better in those roles. While I thought she looked familiar but didn't know why, here she was cold and unfeeling. A good performance, probably, but a very unappealing character.

Sarah Burns was the awkward girlfriend, a perfect match for this man.

David Walton was the voice of reason and the stable, mature brother.

This movie had several memorable characters. Paul Walter Hauser played another appealing loser with a positive attitude who got his law degree online. The man had so much enthusiasm. And so funny whenever he had a victory. "Oh, wow! So that's what it's like!"

And Sugar Lyn Beard was his wife. Perfect name, even if her parents didn't give it to her. I don't know if they did. But so sweet you can't stand it. No, actually quite appealing, even with crying babies.

Danielle Brooks was the very nice waitress.

I got concerned when things started getting depressing, but I promise things get better. This movie could have really taken a dark turn, but that's not what happened.

I wish there had been better music. I seem to be watching a lot of movies lately where people don't have the musical taste that I do. The Penn reunion must have been for graduates of an era when music was terrible. Why should I expect anything different? And yet I see mature responsible adults but hear what sounds like a frat party.

Elizabeth Banks wasn't in the credits. That disappointed me. I now check each movie on imdb before watching it (just to see if I saw it or make sure I have the title right before reviewing) but I made the mistake of looking under her credits after I saw her name in the brief summary on my DVR. I like her as the gorgeous game show host with an attitude and I've seen her in some good movie and maybe TV roles, including an evil stepmom. But she does appear in some provocative sexy photos on Facebook.

It's a worthy effort and one you won't likely regret.

Will we be able to function in a world of social media?
lee_eisenberg11 October 2022
While watching Scott Abramovitch's "Eat Wheaties!", I could relate to Tony Hale's character a bit, what with his social awkwardness and tendency to fixate on things. But beyond that, the movie offers a warning about what things will become like if social media and celebrity obsession end up dominating our lives to the point where we can't concentrate.

It's not a great movie, but I get the feeling that this sort of thing has happened. It's getting to the point where we need classes teaching people how NOT to do this (or at the very least, parents need to keep their children away from screens).

In the end, I recommend the movie. In addition to Tony Hale, Paul Walter Hauser, Danielle Brooks and Elisha Cuthbert, the cast includes Alan Tudyk (a voice artist), Rizwan Manji (Ray on "Schitt's Creek") and Mimi Kennedy (Marjorie on "Mom").

Touching in a world where we need more kindness
santosrowena9 May 2021
My 11 year old son and I just watched this film. He doesn't usually watch movies like this, but he was on the edge of his seat, feeling for and cheering for Sid. It's a movie that reminds all of us, especially during a time where connections are significantly influenced by online / social media, that everyone is deserving of kindness and compassion. It's also a reminder to be kind to ourselves by embracing who we are. Eat Wheaties is a brilliantly funny, beautiful, and moving film. A must watch!

Very Enjoyable
tpeterson19591 May 2021
We rented this because we like the actors, and it was a delight. The story is somewhat predictable, but not enough so to ruin your preconceptions. There are some beautifully cinematic shots mixed in among the comedy and tragedy told through the story of a man who is wrongfully accused of stalking.

Count your blessings

This was such a nice story. It's simple, but briskly paced, and was made with a great outlook on life. The main character has his ups and downs, but you don't feel depressed--you just feel like that's how life is, and it gives you an appreciation for what you have. Now you might think that something that sounds so positive would be too straight-laced, but actually there is some sharper humor in there, stuff that wouldn't have been out of place in Napoleon Dynamite. I will recommend this movie to just about anyone.

Really nice and gentle film.
LLgoatJ4 May 2021
This film tells the story of Sid Straw, who is a bit of an oddball. Over enthusiastic and doesn't really understand social cues. He joins Facebook and accidently ends up stalking a celebrity he went to college with. This leads to a restraining order, losing his job and his home.

This is a really nice film. No sex, no violence or swearing. Just a nice story which keeps your interest. You end up really feeling for Sid and hoping everything works out for him.

Its more of a film you find amusing than laugh out loud. Well worth a watch, really enjoyed this one.

Fun, light-hearted comedy that comments on fame and social media
jmacd-313 June 2021
Tony Hale is in familiar territory playing this character, but it is nice to see him get the chance to play the lead. His Sid Straw is an nice, honest, decent guy who happens to be social media-challenged. His lack of online savvy drives much of this story.

Hale plays awkward, self-unaware characters really well, but he keeps the tone pretty naturalistic in this story, which was a good choice. The apparent absurdity of his situation on Facebook, and the way everyone else reacts provides most of the grist for the conflict here. It's a nice commentary on the superficiality of social media, and how small actions/statements can become magnified beyond any reason.

There's a nice character story arc here, and while not necessarily driven by the character's development (he really hasn't changed that much by the end), it does wrap up in a rather heartwarming, if slightly convenient way.

A good, gentle comedy that delivers well for what it is.

I absolutely love this movie, it's a must see for everyone!
josborn513627 June 2021
Wow, I love this movie so much that I watched it, and then watched it again a few hours later. It's a nice little movie filled with love laughter friendship and family. Tony Hale and cast did an amazing job. Kudos to everyone. It's one of those movies that is clearly not an Oscar winner, but perfect in every other way as a general, all around tightly woven perfectly scripted and casted movie. This is a movie great for the family great for date movie or just by yourself. I was hesitant to see it based on the title, but the trailer drew me in. It was well worth the three dollars I paid to Amazon to watch this movie, and I say that rarely. I am unsure if this is actually based on a real story, I haven't looked it up, but I assume it's not. If it is, it's brilliant. A very heartwarming, touching movie about humankind in the goodness in the not so good in all of us. I would call it a dark comedy or drama. I've never really seen anything that Tony Hale is done, so I'm very impressed with this, if this is any indication of what he has planned for the future.

Great job Very lite and funny. Hope you all do more good comedy. Comedy especially works when it so close to reality. We all experience trouble in our lifetime and his family and friends contribute to him eventually turning his life around.

A story of triumph just when we need it
tall_dave6 May 2021
I have been watching Tony Hale in the best comedy series ever written, "Arrested Development" and expected nearly the same character in this movie. I was presently surprised when I found him acting the part of someone that I can relate to. Someone real!

We all have that friend that tries too hard, wants people to notice them and goes out of their way just to have any kind of "win" in their lives. We all need a win, especially now, when we have all been beaten down by so much that is going on in the world.

The movie takes us on a special kind of journey; of the innocence of some people that just want to be remembered and reminds us of the loneliness that is so easily put upon us by others, sometimes because of the need that drives us to feel human and not forgotten.

I won't give away the ending or drop any spoilers in this review, but I will recommend you watch the movie. The 8 stars I gave it are for the culmination of the story, richness of the characters, their performance, and the way it made me feel to be along on the journey. That is why we watch, right? I hope you enjoy the movie, as I did.

Entertaining movie with a great cast
may1971 May 2021
I really enjoyed this movie! Although the story is not too surprising, the movie has a rather fast pace (a lot of things happen in a very short time), therefore it doesn't get boring and the characters are well portrayed by a really great cast! I loved the characters, the movie portrays a range of people you wouldn't want to be friends with in real life, but they are shown through such a loving and uplifting lense, you can't help but like their quirky and sometimes questionable characters.

Very Sweet

This was a super cute and sweet movie that immediately has you rooting for the underdog. It was well shot, and the cast was great. There were some predictable ups and downs, but Tony Hale's quirky character was charming through and through. It's a perfect date night movie. I highly recommend it, you won't be disappointed!

Terrific Movie!
loren-dunn7 May 2021
Tony Hale is terrific in this movie. Especially if you enjoy him you should check it out. Very funny, ultimately feel-good movie about a really awkward guy who tries a little too hard and definitely doesn't understand how social media works.

One liners that should live forever!
chelleyr7722 September 2023
Warning: Spoilers
This is a seriously underrated comedy. I laughed so hard at some of the one liners... they should be on a list of all time great movie quotes. "Can you deflower my virgin margarita? I'm gonna Davy Crockett that bitc..." I actually have no idea what that means but it was funny as all get out. Believe me there are some amazing one liners in this movie that I don't want to give away.

It's hard to believe that anyone could be that socially awkward unless you are or know one of those people that's that socially awkward. Life can spiral out of control in unpredictable ways. But in the end, even losers need love. And I think all of us have been in the loser category at some point in our lives, where we needed love and support to get out of a bad situation. Sometimes I wish my mother could still try to tuck me in...This movie is completely hilarious!!

Beautiful, funny, feel-good movie
seemajbhatt11 July 2021
I'm surprised this movie only has a 5.6 overall rating. If you like feel-good movies, this one is for you. Guy from Arrested Development (don't know his name) does an amazing job and so do the side characters. Watch this movie!

I am going to watch based on the reviews!!!
kimcoxmonm29 August 2021
I saw the Wheaties box format with Tony Hale, laughed and read all of your reviews. I'm going to check it because everyone seemed to be on the same page instead of the typical polarizing reviews I tend to see on some things. I don't care for critics reviews.

This is the guy who was Forky in Toy Story 4!!!! If Forky and Sid can preservere, then there is some hope!!

Surprisingly decent watch
simonhb-0443526 March 2023
I watched this for Tony Hale (Buster Bluth) and became engrossed pretty quickly, a middle aged "loser", single, decent job but life isn't on track compared to others, misuses social media and finds himself in a world of bother with an old friend turned celebrity.

It has a lot of positive feels throughout despite being a sad story which would have destroyed most people. Tony's character seems to remain positive throughout. It would have been nice to see an appearance from Banks herself.

There where one or two moments that seemed a little unrealistic for me which is why I knocked it down to 8 and other moments which needed a little further explanation..

I personally don't see this as a movie....maybe a series???
