Solid Comedy

Whitney is getting better all the time. I give this special 8/10......or 4 Brendan Schaub's 'You'd be Surprised', out of 10.

Why was I worried??
fallguy_jack2 September 2019
I feel stupid for reading a bunch of negative reviews and thinking that maybe Whitney wasn't funny anymore. She's never been world class, but she was always pretty good. Nothing has changed.

Dear IMDB, how many times do I have to ask for a snowflake filter dammit

I enjoyed it...in parts

All I've known about Whitney Cummings was her involvement in that atrocious "2 Broke Girls" show, where virtually every single joke was set up in the most torturous, unnatural way and delivered a punchline that wasn't even remotely worth the terrible writing necessary to set it up. But her name caught my eye on Netflix, so I decided to check out what her standup was like.

On the whole, it was much more natural than her comic writing in the scripted comedy. It flowed fairly well, and was actually pretty funny sometimes. I had no real complaints about her standup, and while the whole men and women, women and men, ain't it funny? sort of comedy isn't exactly blazing new comic trails, I enjoyed it. As a guy, I found it funny even if I didn't necessarily relate to a large chunk of it because my life experiences haven't been the same. being able to find universal strands of humor is really what comedy should aspire too, after all. My only problem was that after 20 minutes or so, I was just desperately looking for some variety of topic and theme. So I turned it off and came back the next day. I lasted another 20 minutes before deciding to take a break and finish it the next day. Even though, as I said, I generally enjoyed her comedy and found her reasonably funny, it's not really a good thing that someone needs three days to get through an hour-long special.

I'll check out some of her other stuff when I get a chance, just to see if the narrow scope of her comedy routine is typical or just a fluke.

Great!

A well done stand-up that touches on some modern issues in a unique and thoughful way. The sex robot thing was hilarious. Very clever to do that, made it fascinating and hilarious at the end.

I just wanna add that I've seen some other stand up's recent that touch on these modern gender issues and go way too far one way or the other but Whitney managed to make it seem pretty even, giving both sides of the issues an even amount of love and hate so that it didn't feel like she has picking on anyone.

Just wanna point out though, it would probably be a lot less acceptable if a male comic rubbed a female audience members hair and joked about her climaxing because of it. That was the one brief thing that bugged me but only because the topic was how to avoid sexual harassment and how men shouldn't touch women casually thinking its ok so that bit was definitely at odds with some of the message before it, but only a minor issues all and all.

Not very good
pedroacferreira6 August 2019
Almost one hour creating a very bad image of men. The first 5 minutes were ok, but the jokes were going one about the same subject, making this stand up a boring show.

Funny and relevant

I've never been a big fan of Whitney, but I found this special to be very entertaining and relevant. She really takes it up to an eleven with this show! I now look forward to her future projects!

Stale and inane

No real insight, not very funny, lots of white female privilege there without any sense of irony that she represents most of what's she's making fun about. The sex-bot thing was funny only in the sense that, considering how much work Whitney has done to her face (eyebrows, eyes lids and a disastrous rhinoplasty), it looks more human than she does.

Funny and Refreshing
Angstypoo5 August 2019
Aside from the fact that she is hilarious, Whitney delivers her unapologetic humor seemingly without fear of criticism.

Here we have a woman refreshingly toting a brand of feminism in a way that is not automatically dismissive of males.

She took some risks here, which is very respectable. They will no doubt lead to criticism from bigots on both sides of the gender dominance tug-of-war that plagues our society. My hat is off to Whitney on this one.

Social progress agendas aside, watch this. Seriously. It's really funny.

For Fans Only

If you're a fan of her you'll probably enjoy it, most people won't though. Filled with gender generalisations and lots of complaints hidden behind a comics smile the show was a boring mess packed with lazy jokes and overused topics.

Overall it's better than her previous works, she doesn't solely rely on bashing on men, but it still lacks the storytelling ability to make it relatable and enjoyable.

Guys don't like her... what a surprise.

It happens that this show has low rating because men don't like the snow. Well, she is funny and smart. I enjoyed her!

As a guy born in the eighties, I couldn't relate to the jokes
Menex13 September 2019
Maybe I'm too stupid for this show, but I couldn't tell when she was serious, and when she was joking.

Eventually I got bored and turned it off, when about 15 minutes remained of the program.

She sure seem to have had some horrible experiences with men. But it was just sad, the funny twists and punchline was rarely delivered, which made it feel like a life story rather than a stand-up show. Bad writing maybe, or maybe I just don't find it funny how bad some men apparantly act.

Disappointed

I am really big fan of Whitney and I really couldn't wait to watch this show, but it was really boring. I couldn't believe that someone funny like her is telling so stupid jokes. I hope next one is better.

She is right
ersbel26 September 2019
She is right. She is also boring. Maybe the timing is not right, maybe it's something else. Maybe she is just getting old and Burning Man is not breeder friendly enough.

So, so, so, so, so, so, sooooo bad.
Carpetface19 September 2023
This whole "special" sounded like the rant of that bitter girlfriend that your partner always has in their friend-group who also thinks she is funny.

There is nothing new, refreshing or original about anything she is talking about in this "special". In short this was just a monolog about all the bad men she has or has had in her life, or her misconstrued view of men in general and plain complaining in general. That can of course be funny when done in a funny way, but when there is nothing new, original or interesting about it, it just seems bitter, sad and you can't but wonder about her as a human being making the choices she does that leads to all this complaining about men feeling sad for her. It also ads another level to it all when you see how promiscuous she is on SoMe and the web, so it all just comes across as hypocritical and pathetic and a shot at surfing on the "meToo" wave that started with Weinstein.

In general she also doesn't have any of the charm or charisma that real top comedians have, so the whole "special" just has a weird vibe of a hyperactive woman playing the victim, complaining about her life and "struggles". I guess it all just doesn't seem real, and more like a comedy grift, and that is never good. She actually reminds me of Joe Rogans "comedy", and that is not a compliment.

I guess I would have a different take if I was a woman, as I have the feeling she is trying her best to play to women.
