A balanced score
lanna-sousa25 April 2019
Between her fans giving 10 stars to this, and haters giving only 1, there is me who knows a few of her songs, but never even listen to one entire Beyoncé's album.

I stand with a 7 star review and I'll tell you why.

Everybody got to admit that this production deserved to be recorded. This is just a concert, a Coachella concert, but Beyoncé put an effort on it beyond precedents!!

That's it guys!! You can not expect a concert she could give on a Tour. Don't expect either some serious and well behaved perfomance, simply because her music is not like that. Yes, you'll see a lot of cursing and sexual dancing, angry expressions and political positions... if you don't like this, than you don't like her music! And if don't like her music, why the hell would you watch her show expecting to like it? IT DOESNT MAKE ANY SENSE.

I believe that most of the people giving 1 star is actually judging Beyoncé musically and personally. Not the film.

I really enjoyed her performance specially when in comparison to other artists perfomance on Coachella.

The only problem i see here, it's because Netflix promoted this as a documentary, and this is not it. This is just a concert, with a few backstage scenes!! So if you watched lady's Gaga's "five foot two", and thought this would be similar... forget about it! The film is just like those DVDs we used to buy at the supermarket with a concert of our favorite artist... and then played it at home once we were having a dinner party.

THATS IT AND ITS GOOD just good

Go ahead and watch it with the right expectations.

People are missing the point

Just because she is celebrating her heritage and black culture, does not mean she hates white people . . . This movie shows all the hard work that goes into creating an epic performance. Kudos to everyone involved in its production.

long live the queen

My Lord, this woman is talented. Singing, dancing, composing, swagger, writing, fashion, authenticity, relatabilty, confidence, hardworking. This is pure musical empowerment, full of so many fun surprises. The behind the scenes stuff is good, but I wish it was much more straight-forward, instead of pronouncing its own self-importance...the concert does the thematic heavy-lifting all by itself.

Bringing HBCU to the masses.

If you are a fan of Beyonce you will love this and even if you are not a fan you will still appreciate the tireless hours her band, dancers, choir, and the people behind the scenes put in to give a phenomenal concert. Those 1/2stars reviews you see on here are people who really didn't watch it...don't pay attention to that.

BEYCHELLA
yaboom9719 April 2019
I keep seeing bad reviews for this documentary and I wondered why until I realized that most people who leave film reviews are middle-aged white men. Don't listen to them.

Homecoming is inspiring, entertaining, joyful and most of all, honest. Not only do we get the chance to see a high quality video of Beyoncé's Coachella performance, we get to see all the hard work her cast and crew put into the production. We learn that it took 8 months of meetings, vocal practices, dance rehearsals, and plain old perseverance for it to come to fruition. And it shows.

I cried a few times watching this documentary because Beyoncé's performance was so much more than just a concert, it was history. Beyoncé is the first African American woman to headline Coachella and she states that what was most important to her was bringing culture to the festival. Because of this, she hired a predominantly black cast and emphasized the importance of historically black universities. The film quotes DuBois who states that, "Education must not simply teach work, it must teach life."

I hope that people give themselves the chance to broaden their perspective and see this documentary for more than what it seems. It isn't simply a behind-the-scenes look at a Coachella performance, it's an ode to all the young black men and women out there persevering and following their dreams. That alone deserves more than just a 1 star rating.

HISTORIC!
badgalfronci19 April 2019
Great job Bey!! Not sure what some of the hate is about, but remember this film documents Beyoncé's 2018 Coachella performance. If you're not a fan of her music, you may want to skip this. For the die hard fans, aka the "Beehive", this is your inside look of the show and what it took to get to Coachella.

If you saw the show on YouTube last year and was impressed, this is a better representation.

The title of this review is "Historic", because that's what Beyoncé's 2018 performance was and you can Google the "why".

You'll Get Exhausted Watching This!
jrbrowzer20 April 2019
What a testament to the power of positivity! There is a scene in the last 15 minutes with everyone moving in unison with Beyoncé leading. To orchestrate, choreograph and direct that scene alone would be daunting, but everyone kept it up throughout their 90 minute live performance, Perfectly flawless performances by all - and gotta give props to the visionary behind it all. Thank you for setting a great example for those interested in the performing arts.

Not really "behind the scenes," but what an impressive show!
Hallelujah28912 June 2020
This is a very nicely made capture of the Beyonce Coachella experience. It does not really have much behind the scenes content. I finished at least half.

I wanted more of the journey to the stage that was promised. Much of this film is just the performance itself. However it is a very good performance, with great images, editing, and sound. It seems Beyonce really played a key role in getting it all to come together to come across in the way she lived it. She had her crew really capture all that sound of the stomping on the bleachers for example. All of the editing looks very kinetic too.

It's an inspiring performance with a lot of powerful female sexual energy, a lot of deep heartbreak and fury in the lyrics about love affairs and emotional affairs and cheating. As brutally honest as the lyrics are, implied to be about Jay-Z, the concert also features him in the show. I think it must have been a great moment on stage.

I'm not particularly a Beyonce fan but I was impressed with the concert and its production and artistry. I did think as a documentary it was very light on all the other parts that usually go into a making of video. Maybe there was more in the second half. I don't know. I understand how others might consider the content that was included a bit too high brow. I wish there was more that could've been shown. But honestly it's a remarkable performance.

Just Wow!!
morganmunky23 April 2019
This was the most incredible performance I've seen, and I watched it from my living room. The amount of culture represented in this film and in this performance was just beautiful and brought me to tears. In my living room I felt the immense culture and overall feeling that this performance gave, and I can't imagine what it would have felt like in person. I'm not black, but the feeling of unity and equality and just everything in this film was overwhelming. Beyonce showcases such amazing black talent. Those who are leaving poor reviews obviously missed the point when they say it was about Beyonce only. It was, and it wasn't. Beyonce has worked HARD for this, and she deserves the recognition. But this film also recognizes black excellence in general and the performance was so powerful. Absolutely stunning.

Beyonce is one of the most hardworking and dedicated artist in today's music industry. She is really the Queen and when I watched Homecoming I felt the Bey's energy in every cell in my body. The energy was so was real and she utilised her platform perfectly .There was so much give and take and I really believed every word that she spoke. Beyonce is known for being a private person and this documentary was personal yet private and it really represented Beyonce.I love you Queen. <3

Excellent behind the scenes
paulaljay13 December 2019
This film goes behind the scenes in the concerns. It's a great insight into what goes on in Beyonce fast paced life. What a woman, shows how she's driven and you can see what it takes for her to get where she is.

I've never left a review before. But I just wanted to say to the folks who thought it was selfish and self centered, that you missed the point. Don't really expect you to get it. It's cool though. That's why we all get an opinion.

A little lacking
bubandsamsmom27 April 2019
I love Beyoncé. I'm a big fan. While the show itself was beautiful and pleasing to watch, as a white woman I would have felt awkward to have been there in person. In fact it was like I was watching a secret club meeting at times.

This woman's ego knows no bounds.
becksleo19 April 2019
The thing is. I love Beyoncé's songs and she has brought a lot of musical influence into my life. But I have to say. This documentary has only made me realize how dangerously large this woman's ego is. In this documentary, she paints the story a struggling mother who had to "sacrifice" looking after her newborn twins for a an over the top Coachella performance. Just. No. She is worth $355 million, she didn't have to do it, stop with the victim narratives. Also her performances had so much charged political undertones (predominantly feminism, black lives matter, male beratement) as just desperate ploy for Beyoncé to stay "woke" and relevant. Overall can't believe people fall for these false pretenses about these celebrities, as if they are genuinely doing good for the world. The reality is, they are simply performers with dangerously large amounts of power, self worth and entitlement and this documentary sugarcoats this, badly.

We are watching the work of an artist at the peak of her powers and will never see the likes of a performance or production like this for many years to come.

Elevates the concert film
moviedive19 April 2019
It's a kinetic cut of Beyoncé's Coachella performance intercut with a glimpse of her creative process, her hard-work and intention, and her work-life balance.

We also get short interludes with the performers who played and danced alongside her in the show.

Do I wish we could've gotten more interviews with her creative team, maybe hear about what they put into the show? Sure.

Am I mad about what we did get with Homecoming? Absolutely not.

Other artists put out concert videos, but Beyonce truly put out a film. She took something that most of us experienced through static livestream and cellphone videos and social media reactions and she made it come alive again like we were right there with her.

It's a snapshot, a moment in time adorned with her hopes and influences. It's a gorgeous record of a masterful production.

HOMECOMING is a WIN
ladspencer18 April 2019
Beyonce has created some great visual and sonic art over the last few years and then to top herself with the greatest concert film ever created is astounding. And then to release a live album unceremoniously the same night - she is quite bold. This film is very creatively inspired and confidently ambitious. The themes of black art and perseverance are specific but carry across the film's length with grace and aplomb. Anyone, nonfans included, can get something out of this. The euphoria is palpable and the experience infectious. So glad Netflix picked this up and can bring to a global audience some of the best of American culture.

Respect
serdeatalay24 April 2019
I am not sure how healthy it is to write a review about this documentary right after watching it because of how much it fires you up, but I just wanted to say a few things despite that reservation after I saw some seriously flawed reviews. Obviously people have the liberty to not like it, that's no one's business, but I think criticism must be fair here. And most of the ones that I see are not.

I am not a hardcore Beyoncé fan per se, but this is one of the most amazing things I have ever watched, not just for the incredible stage show but with every element of it. I deeply respect every single person who made this show possible. You can see how hard they worked, how passionate they were, how much they valued what they did. This is historical. I appreciate how political Beyoncé gets with her music and every single detail of it, and that quality is perfectly immersed in this film. She is truly an inspiration and I believe that this documentary captures the essence of it.

You may not agree with her or not get along with her thing, but you should at least respect that woman, and definitely see this film.

Could've been good but eh
nicmatteson23 April 2019
The production was well done, but I wish there would've been more behind the scenes and lead up to the actual performance Also the narration by B is really muffled and quiet so I found myself turning up and down the volume. Well done performance though. Great dancers.

Not Bad
ini_ynti-2245728 October 2019
Personally, I didn't really enjoy the concert because the music was too loud for my ears. Some I enjoyed. But I really amazed by how Beyonce worked so hard for this concert, having known that she just gave birth to her twins when she prepared it. What a great woman she is.

Black Excellence
willypooh-6688818 April 2019
This is Beyoncé at her peak and you can tell by just watching the trailer. The film however is so much more than just Beyoncé. It's black culture in its entirety. To see her perform live with the band, her dancers, and the orchestra is something you will never forget. This is an amazing experience and something that I cannot recommend more.

Great, but not perfect!
hmsctp7 September 2022
If you are a real fan of Queen Bey you are gonna love it. A nice movie but I think that viewers expected a documentary movie of her up to now journey more than a well-directed live performance in Coachella (which was astonishing). You won't regret watching it but don't expect to be surprised.

The beginning was striking enough to draw your attention ( you cannot expect something less from QUEEN BEY). In the meanwhile, there were some shots were she was talking about herself and the difficulties she faced to perform more than adequately at Coachella but I couldn't feel her enough. I wanted more screen time of her talking about how hard was the first performance in 2018 after the twins birth. I wanted those who participated in homecoming to talk in depth about what they did. I'm glad that I saw live performance in that extent but if I had to choose to cut some scenes from the performance to see something more enticing I would have cut them. I felt like there was repeated mode of what I was watching .

I just wanted to feel her moreee!!!!

Clothes, choreography, dancers, audience , directing , vocals WERE ALL AMAZING.

A queen herself!
tijana-cekic18 April 2019
To be able to see that the greatest artist of our time is just a human, a woman who got through the same moments as any other woman does - that took my breath away! Just wow! A true masterpiece of a woman.

Totally overrated
ThatsNotaKnife5 May 2019
Firstly I have to admit I only watched the first 45 minutes and I just could not sit through the rest. Boring and repetitious comes to mind. If it gets better beyond the 45 minute mark, then I've missed out, but I highly doubt it. Where the hell is the music ???? Absolutely terrible, don't waste your time.
