A deal gone wrong
vincent_stalba24 August 2021
There are moments of brilliance in this short film about a stand-off from a deal gone wrong.

Performances were wonderful with Honda King really shining. The plot definitely has a nugget of an idea to would be interesting to see fully developed. Looking forward to seeing more work from this team.

Short films are tough to make
fuhrman-vidpro7 August 2021
As a filmmaker myself, I know first hand how difficult it is to make a good short film. You are cooking with the same ingredients as you would with any length of film, you just have less of everything; less time, fewer resources and smaller budgets. This makes it extremely challenging to create a good short film.

That being said, I thought Rejects had some moments with solid acting, especially with Honda King and Austin Buchanan.

Technically I thought the film was lacking, but this is par for the course with most short films; trying to do more with less is the name of the game when playing in this arena. I also felt there were some key moments that the filmmakers could have taken more time with, or in a couple instances were not included. Maybe they were filmed but left on the cutting room floor?

Overall, performances are the best thing going for this film. It's also worth mentioning that bad sound is not uncommon in short films, and I could clearly hear 99% of this film, so kudos there.

Super interesting concept delivered very well...

I love art that makes you think and Rejects does just that. I read another review on here and it talked about how hard short films are to make and I completely agree. There is almost always little to no budget and therefore very little resources. And typically I think this is very obvious when you watch short films. Honestly, many do not even deserve one star even if graded on a scale relative to other short films because they are almost unbearable to watch... BUT I think Rejects really accomplished the task here of telling an interesting story and concept in a nice package.

People always talk about how content is king and how video quality is not the most important thing if you have good content. I mean look at how terrible some social media content is in terms of production quality yet it spreads to millions of people who enjoy it because of the content. I think the concept and twist in the film here is what really shines and the main performances are great and help tell that story. And let me be clear the production value is a lot better than the crappy social media content I was referring to haha. There are some great shots and effects and although it's not perfect I didn't find any shot or anything in the film that made me cringe or want to turn it off.

AND let's just talk about the music. I thought the score was FANTASTIC and that the audio for the dialogue was great too. As the other review also mentioned there are so many times that the audio is unbearable in short films and again Rejects stands apart in a good way here.

Overall I think Rejects tells a great story with some great moments when it comes to production and performances. This isn't a multi million dollar Hollywood blockbuster so set your expectations properly but definitely give it a watch if you are looking to be entertained in under 15 minutes.

Great short with impressive performances!

I've watched many feature films and especially short films. I heard that this project was filmed in a day with practically no budget. The quality and performances exceeded my expectations. I am looking forward to what this team can produce with a budget. I would also like to know more about the leading character and villain's motivations/beliefs and what the real conflict will be. But a very interesting glimpse into a potential feature so far!

Warning: Spoilers
Austin Buchanan puts in a solid performance but Honda King owns the screen when she is on it. Slightly cliche' throughout but it's hard not to be cliche' when you are making a drug-deal-gone-bad film. These guys have zero business double crossing a "gangster" but there is enough witty banter to where the film doesn't take itself too seriously. What separates this from all the other drug-deal-gone bad films out there is an unexpected twist that ties the whole thing together. I should also mention that the moral dilemma one of the characters is faced with was probably the most compelling part of the story. Aside from the editing getting a little clunky here and there, it's a good piece of work.
