Motel Blues

Comedies from Korea, for me, have always seemed shrill and even bitter. It seems straight comedy is not allowed, you have to put people in the kind of situations where pain, anger & sadness also preside. This film is no exception, but it has an interesting premise. Two married ladies search for affairs and find them, both going to the same hotel, where they see each other but do not really meet until way into the story. Using the internet names "Tweetie" and "Dewdrop", they take their men to a room and in one case, the sex is raucous and the other frustrating. There is some slapstick here, especially when the husband of one of the ladies tries to catch her in the act, but there is also poignancy, intense unhappiness and frustration. Of the two ladies, I liked "Tweetie" (Jin-seo Yun) more, as she has a bit more of a moral compass. When she smiles, which isn't often, she looks next to beautiful. This film is not essential viewing, but if you are tuned into the comic style of Korean cinema, you will like it, it will keep your interest. I'd say give it a try.

2 married women having an affair
KineticSeoul6 June 2012
Okay so the main reason I decided to check this movie out is because of Jin-seo Yun because I am fond of her as an actress and she is pretty. Although her character is naive it goes from slightly awkward to cute and attractive. And she does a good job of playing this naive and yet cute housewife. And when she has an affair she goes by the name of "Tweetie" but what she is looking for the most is intimate romance and is a bit of a perv. I just don't get how her husband acts like she almost doesn't even exist. I know what her character does isn't really right but her character keeps getting more likable as the movie progresses. The other protagonist is less likable one in my opinion played by Kim Hye-Su and goes by the fake name "Dewdrop". Who is actually a pretty despicable and selfish character so you probably won't have any remorse for this character most of the way through. But Kim Hye-Su just seems to play this type of character very well and it shows in her previous movies. Anyways when it comes to the guys the wives has affairs with, it just seems like a mismatch since one guy is just nice college student who is a but of a dunce and the other guy is a arrogant business man that just wants sex straightforward sex and nothing else. So you wonder if the girls and guys they met switched, but I can see why it went in the direction it did. Cause if it switched than there won't be much of a conflict. This isn't really a dark and depressing movie although some of the characters get depressing sometimes. But there is a bit of comedy thrown in so it won't go in a very serious direction. I give this movie a 6.5/10 because I personally though the ending was lacking and most of the way through almost everything is predictable.

Good movie, lots of fun.

A good date comedy about two Korean girls cheating on their husbands. A lot of funny situations that keep the movie enjoyable till the end. Good acting by Hye-su Kim, who turns her not so original character into a really fresh and interesting one. The movie is packed with sex jokes and sex situations, but it never gets vulgar and keeps all these themes at a very funny level. If you like Asian cinema you should look this movie at once and if you are new to Asian movies this should be a good start to enjoy the very active and talented Korean scene. This movie is better than most of the Hollywood movies of the genre in the last years. It has been presented in Italy at the famous Far East Film Festival, where it gained a good reaction from the audience. If you are looking for a laugh go and watch this movie.
