Turned Off Their Brains?
magnum-ajt25 December 2020
Warning: Spoilers
So in the middle of a war they allow someone unknown to beam directly into ops without precautions? No even a phaser drawn and ready? Episode started off with idiotic nonsense

Time to take the mirror off the wall.
thevacinstaller16 August 2021
Warning: Spoilers
*sigh* Yet another mirror universe episode. No star trek series has bettered the TOS mirror episode and this episode manages to be a rehash of the mirror universe from a few seasons ago with Jen Sisko sacrificing herself to save Jake.

I actually enjoy the bareil character (and performance) but I could see the ending of this episode coming a mile away and that kills the enjoyment of viewing the episode itself.

Additionally ----- What's up with Kira falling in love with bariel while still processing Odo committing mass murder to save her life half a season ago? Or the fact he is a completely different person --- a charming scoundrel. I guess if you really stretch you could potentially buy into her not being over his death?!

This episode couldn't even be saved by Mirror Kira's sexy walk.

Unnecessary Kira love story
snoozejonc3 April 2023
DS9 receives a visitor from the mirror universe.

I am not a fan of this episode. I wouldn't describe it as badly made, but the placement of it after another romance-focused episode and the tension of the Dominion war arc is questionable and (to me) it adds nothing to Kira's development.

It is character-driven, about someone being coerced into doing something bad and the dilemma of whether they will see the light before it's too late. I think this is a decent premise, but for me, it moves too slowly and some of the dialogue is pretty flat. Philip Anglim makes the best of the material, but for me he cannot make the character engaging. He does not feel like the loveable rogue the other characters are making him out to be and this aspect feels quite forced. His dialogue near the end makes him seem defeatist and like he is being shepherd's crooked off the stage for the reset button to be pressed.

Kira carries the story in my opinion, thanks largely to Nana Visitor once again successfully switching between the two versions of the character. She provides virtually all of the entertainment (along with Worf in the double-date scene), regardless of how irritating it is to see such a cool character caught up in this arc.

Illogical and overdone
planktonrules16 January 2015
Warning: Spoilers
On the original "Star Trek", a wonderful classic was "Mirror, Mirror"--where Kirk and several other crew members somehow beam onto a DIFFERENT Enterprise in an alternate universe. Here, the Enterprise is an instrument of evil and the crew are all a bunch of cut-throats-- and it was terrific fun to watch. So, when "Star Trek: Deep Space 9" did a follow-up show about this universe, I naturally loved it. However, as the saying goes, you can definitely get too much of a good thing-- and the lazy writers began writing more and more episodes set in this grim world. By this particular episode, they've interacted with these folks five times (or so) and this one, aside from being totally unoriginal, is also sloppily written and I'd rank this among the bottom 10 or 20 for the series.

The show begins with Bareil beaming onto DS9. Those who regularly watch the series know it must involve the alternates because Bareil died a year or more ago in the series. Instead of this other Bareil being a holy man, however, this one is a thief and he is on a mission to do bad things. There are several HUGE problems with all this. First, although Major Kira knows of the parallel world and has visited, she almost instantly trusts the evil Bareil! Second, at the very end, the evil guy behaves in a way that isn't one bit consistent with his character. And, third, he goes back with the EVIL Kira to his old world--even though he'll obviously be killed for his actions. Does any of this really make any sense? Nope. It just seemed like a throw-away episode--one that somehow made it to production even though it was ridden with logical errors and was pretty dull as well.

Mirror Universe

After a few excellent episodes we go back to filler. I'm not a fan of the mirror universe in DS9.

Please Tell Them to Stay!
Hitchcoc3 November 2018
An identical personage from the alternate universe enters the space station. He looks exactly like Kira's former lover and she develops a new relationship with the duplicate. This is dragged on into the Bajoran religion which intrigues this guy. But it's hard to remove yourself from what you have become. The whole thing was dull and rather pointless.

A visitor from the Alternate Universe
Tweekums4 August 2010
Warning: Spoilers
When somebody beams into ops Kira has a surprise; it is the late Vedek Bareil, her former lover. Of course there is a logical explanation for this; he is from the alternate universe. He attempts to take Kira hostage but is soon captured and asks if he can remain in this universe. The two of them get on well together although it is clear that he is suffering from some culture shock, his Bajor was very different, he didn't even appear know what the prophets or the orbs were, something every regular Bajoran would know about. It later becomes apparent that he did know about the orb; Attendant Kira has also come from the Alternate Universe and the two of them plan to steal the Orb of Prophecy. Obviously this plot is thwarted but only after Kira gets a tip off from an unlikely source.

This episode had some fun scenes I particularly like the scene where Worf doesn't believe a story Bareil is telling and the later scene where Dax and the doctor are curious about just what Kira and Bareil got up to the night before. Nana Visitor put in a good performance as the two Kiras and Philip Anglim was believable as Bareil; right until the end it was hard to be sure what his character would do.

Kira gets her groove back?
bclivesinme30 August 2021
Kira falls in love. Again... Steamy gossip awaits. It's hard not to sigh when the mirror universe characters cross over are the main story plot... I do enjoy the Kira character cross over but is it needed at this point in the series?

Odo?
yanksa131 July 2018
Warning: Spoilers
(1) This episode was boring, (2) this episode is most all about Kira and that horrible opposite universe Kira, who is a terrible person, and Kira isnt my favorite character, that would be Nog, (3) Odo lets this opposite universe appear on Deep Space Nine and he isnt watching carefully (4) Deep Space Nine as a show overdosed on Kira and her home world on the first three seasons, Im over with her and her world, (5) the Sixth Season is the most exciting season and they have this boring episode in the middle, like a fly stuck in your wedding cake, (6) even Visitor who played the character didnt like the episode, and (7) the high point is Quark, who with Odo could have saved the episode with a confrontation with the thief and Kira's opposite. Fail episode.

When you thought, you have seen enough of Kira's romances...
tomsly-4001518 November 2023
...the mirror universe version of Bareil shows up on DS9 and although Kira says, he knows that this is not the Bareil she fell in love with, she falls in love with mirror Bareil of course right away. I think most viewers wanted to shake and slap Kira and tell her, that something smells wrong here and she should take care. But nope, Kira is straight up full on romance mode again and doesn't see the obvious. Quark has to tell her, that this Bareil has a dark side and he is most likely about to steal an orb from the shrine.

Also, why can this guy beam directly into ops and no one points a phaser at this unknown intruder although the sensors indicated before that someone from an unknown location is about to beam in? And how comes the sensors don't pick up the signal of evil mirror universe Kira, who has also beamed on the station?

I find it quite strange, too, that people from the mirror universe can beam to the other side and can just walk around freely without being monitored. By now everyone should know, that a lot of tricks and deception is happening on the other side. I also think, the concept of characters from both universes travelling back and forth and interacting with each other has been pushed too far. It does not seem to be special anymore. Also, if it is so easy to beam over to the other side, it would most likely be abused by lots of species. Travel to the other universe and exploit their ressources for example. The mirror universe encounters should just have been a one-time thing and not a recurring theme. Especially since some mirror universe character are just goofy copies of the original characters, like this joke of a mirror universe Kira in her leather dress or mirror universe Bashir.

Bajoran temples are probably uncomfortable
XweAponX12 April 2023
I was raised in a particular church, where it was "stand sit, kneel, lather, rinse repeat."

This isn't really about the Bajoran religion, other than the fact that they are depicted as kneeling in their temple for an elongated amount of time and have Orbs from the Prophets that have different characteristics, I have participated in services similar to what is shown in this episode sans the Orb. This is probably one of the first times that we get to see the actual Bajoran service from inside the temple. So that makes at least that aspect of this episode relatively important, it was something we had never seen before.

The other story, about Bariel Antos, brings a person from the alternate universe into the prime universe, which is a switch from how it usually happens.

At first, we want to believe his story, and his reasons for wanting to stay in the prime 'verse.

Until we hear from Quark- A person who associates with criminals and low lifes, he definitely would recognize one of his own.

And he does. But the problem is, Kira does not want to believe this because of course, it is coming from Quark.

This episode is important in that it shows how a person from the alternate universe who is basically scum can see themselves reflected in the mirror of the prime universe, therefore causing some of that scum and villainy to come off.

My favorite part of this is the dinner with Worf and Dax. This particular Bariel is as good as Rom at being a pickpocket.

Regardless, I enjoyed an episode about the mirror universe, even though they don't really go there. I had originally thought that there were only four basic mirror episodes in deep space nine, this episode makes five. It is a nice Interlude. Unfortunately, it presented opportunities that could have been abused later, but we only got one more mirror episode and Antos was not present.

And we have to remember, it is easier for civilized men to behave like barbarians than it is for barbarians to behave like civilized men. Unless, of course, they are the Intendant, or, Captain Gabriel Lorca- A certain type of deviousness might be usable to fool people in the prime universe. And, of course, we see that happen as well.

But when it comes down to it, my primary motivation for writing this right now is that I thought the Bajoran temple would be an uncomfortable place to kneel for and unspecified (aka long) amount of time.

Impressive
charlestraphagan15 July 2020
We just started this one and NO ONE is going to understand this episode off the BAT we discovered.

They all lie to themselves and tell themselves it's not that person because they believe their rational mind is the power, is the beacon pointing towards the truth.

When of course in reality we all know the rational mind can be a mans worst enemy....

Feeling is knowing, as it can be no other way.

second half

:(... he's such a nice guy....imagine me....a spiritual leader paused forever :(....

:(...........

HE APPEARED OUT OF THE AIR LIKE SUPER MAN!!! :D
