Squidville

Warning: Spoilers
While Grandma's Kisses is just a subpar episode, Squidville is one of the most important ones. It shows us that deep down Squidward actually realizes on Spongebob and Patrick to a degree and that being with his own kind is, well, boring whether he admits it or not.

Nuance in Spongebob - Grandma's Kisses & Squidville (Personal Favorites)
juliussimmons21 May 2021
Grandma's Kisses: Although this episode may seem to fall flat on its face with the concept of "growing up" and just seem like an annoying 12-minute episode of bullying, this episode in my opinion doesn't.

It's an honest, more real, yet comical, piece of just growing up that everyone has to face, being nostalgic and all that. I feel Spongebob here; I don't want to grow up. However, we gotta still remember that we need to be who we are and that we should embrace the opportunity and love that we get from our younger selves, carrying those qualities later in life.

It seems pretty far-fetched in my opinion writing this, but I really just do feel the passion and just heart and soul put out by Stephen on here

Squidville: Yet another episode in Spongebob which is a truly iconic one. While containing some of the best Spongebob jokes and memes yet, it's another reality check for its viewers. It's a take on American life and how we're always trying to live like the same, reaching that medium where everything feels redundantly ill

It's a message you gotta take cause if you're just trying to lie behind the social constraints to express who you are, you're just another resident of Squidville.

One bad episode and one good one

Warning: Spoilers
Okay, to start off, I think Spongebob's relationship with his grandma is wholesome and sweet.

But apparently Bikini Bottom doesn't. Seriously, these fish bully this poor sponge for having a good relationship with his grandma.

They're incredibly immature. Seriously, are Squidward and the Krusty Krab customers all 8-year olds? At least one guy got called out for overdoing it.

Although I do like the moral of "growing up doesn't mean giving up childhood things that you still enjoy."

As for Squidville, I like this one more.

Have you ever wondered why Squidward doesn't just move away from Bikini Bottom? Well, Squidville is the answer to that question, because he DOES move away, and we get to see the result of it.

So basically, Squidward moves to Tentacle Acres, and it's basically a place populated by Squidwards.

At first it seems like paradise, but the monotony bores him to the point where he eventually skips out on playing his clarinet. Yes, Squidward says he doesn't feel like playing his clarinet.

He starts playing with a reef blower because it turns out that even Squidward can have some silly fun sometimes. That scene made me smile.

He does, however, annoy the other residents, and then realizes the place is too stuck-up for him and leaves.

Like PhantomStrider on YouTube, I kind of do think it would've been cool if Squidward found a compromise between living in Tentacle Acres and still hanging out with anyone on the outside he wants to hang out with, like Spongebob, who he genuinely seemed to miss given his reaction when he thinks he hears him.

That being said, Squidville is a pretty good episode anyway in my opinion.

From Grandma's House to the Big City

Warning: Spoilers
Grandma's Kisses - Sit tight. I've got beef with this one. When SpongeBob is humiliated for getting a kiss from Grandma in public, he takes it into his own hands to stop being humiliated by his grandma by "growing up". And Patrick helps him. ...Only for him to go back on it, almost immediately! What follows is SpongeBob constantly getting taunted with things that aren't necessarily "baby" things, like some cookies and a good story. And when he finally snaps, I'm not laughing at how over-the-top it is, I genuinely feel bad for the poor guy. Plus, I find it irritating how the others make fun of him for being a grandma's boy. Come on, like you're any better, SQUIDWARD, the Momma's boy of the whole dang show! It has a good message, sure, but golly do I despise this episode way more than I should. (3/10)

Squidville - This episode is the answer to an age-old question: why doesn't Squidward just... move away? The answer being simple. Too much of a good thing can wear on you. He needs SpongeBob and Patrick to spice things up, even if it's to his dismay, oftentimes. This is another episode that I think paints Squidward's character very well. Plus, it has plenty of fun gags and quotes! What more can you ask for? (9/10)

Overall - While I love Squidville for how it portrays Squidward, but Grandma's Kisses bogs this duo down for me, drastically. Watch one, not the other, call it day.

Score: 9 + 3 = 12/20 -> 6/10; Not recommended, but not terrible.

Gotta Make a Move to a Town That's Right for Me Warning: Spoilers
Grandma's Kisses was awful. The worst of Season 3. It's overwrought and mean. The comic 'Great Grandma' was better because Squidward learns that Grandma SquarePants is more than just a coddling sentimentalist but a cultured and classy and still very kind woman.

Squidville is miles better. Squidward moves to a gated community called Tentacle Acres, and at first he's comfortable there but after a while he finds himself to be miserable and misses his neighbors. I never get tired of this episode. It's funny, well-paced and has smart dialogue and an entertaining scene where Squidward runs around Tentacle Acres with the Leaf Blower, being a total renegade.

Grandma's Kisses (AWFUL)

Warning: Spoilers
When I saw the episode for the first time, oh my god ... I HATED IT! why? because in this episode SpongeBob throws a tantrum to convince his grandma to give him kisses, seriously ... where was his optimistic and kind personality? seriously, TERRIBLE.

As for Squidville, I have not seen it, but it's much better than this crap, that's why I give it a 5 out of 10.
