SPENDER – 'Homecoming" -1991

Spender is a Police series from the UK that ran for 3 years and 20 episodes. There was also a full length TV film that followed the series. The series starred Jimmy Nail as an undercover Police Detective. After a spot of bother on one of his assignments Nail is banished from London to Newcastle upon Tyne. The twist here is that Newcastle is where Nail is from. His ex-wife and two daughters live there. He had joined the force to get out of the place. The last place he wants to return to is Newcastle.

Nail hits town and is given a case going after a group boosting cars. The boss, Paul Yelland figures Nail undercover skills will help him get the info needed. Nail is given a Police contact, Berwick Kaler, so he can pass any info without showing himself at the station.

Nail uses an old mate from the past, Sammy Johnson, as a source for underworld gossip. Johnson is a smalltime crook Nail had helped out years before. Johnson fills him in on all the latest crooks and who is running what racket. There is of course the awkward reunion with the ex, Denise Welch and his two daughters.

After a few violent encounters with several nasty types, Nail discovers that the car racket is being run by an out of city gangster. They ship the cars out of the country for a nice tidy payoff. Needless to say, Nail applies some needed violence of his own to bring the racket down and chase the gang out of Newcastle.

This is a much better series than my poor excuse for a review is suggesting. The show was a hit, and it is too bad that it only ran the 20 episodes.
