Pretty fun

THE RIPENING RUBIES is a pretty fun episode of the show, although it does start with a ridiculously awful special effect that looks straight out of KNIGHTMARE or some such. This one begins with a thief trying to sell a stolen item of jewellery to the jeweller who sold it in the first place! He sets an elaborate trap accordingly. A good supporting cast here that includes Ron Pember, Windsor Davis and Richard Hurndall.

The Ripening Rubies

The production quality in this series has been variable. The episodes with some outside location shooting came across as better. This one starts with some terrible blue screen work.

The featured detective is Bernard Sutton (Robert Lang) and he is in fact a jeweller. He employs an ex con who is going straight and they come across a lag who is trying to sell a valuable ruby necklace that was stolen from Lady Faber.

London society has been gripped with jewellery thefts. Sutton has been persuaded to keep a watchful eye as Lord and Lady Faber throw a party which will feature many distinguished guests.

Also keeping an eye on proceedings is Inspector Illingworth (Windsor Davies sporting a non Welsh accent) who distrusts Sutton's ex con employee.

Sutton has a certain determination about him. He also can do basic detective work like making a long distance call to Paris to gather more information. This is an important clue that gives away the culprit as only in the last year could such a phone call be made.

Obviously in the party thrown by the Fabers there are a few dodgy characters hanging about. I do think the actual thefts were audacious and the story lifts in the latter part. It gets better as it goes on and we certainly hear some disgusting views from those from high society about more common people and Sutton is left in no doubt that he is one of them.

Thoroughly entertaining.

A thief foolishly makes a major, unfortunate error, trying to sell a valuable ruby necklace back to the jeweller that crafted it. It's a link in a chain of multiple jewel thieves from society folk.

I know this episode will receive criticism in a few areas, pacing and acting perhaps being the major flaws, however, I thought this was great fun, a thoroughly entertaining episode.

I think this was perhaps the kind of episode, and the storytelling I was expecting from this series, lighter toned, fanciful, somewhat whimsical.

Cleverly done, when you think people are going overboard, and being silly, there's a lot more going on than you think, thoroughbred enjoyable.

This boasts a terrific cast, Robert Lang is fine as The amateur Detective and Jeweller Bernard Sutton, I liked that for him, detection was a hobby, again I felt they fitted the show well.

Lally Bowers was great fun as the over the top Lady Faber, well supported by Moira Redmond (seeing her makes me want to watch Melissa,) Windsor Davies and Richard Hurndall.

7/10.
