  Charlie Salinger : You really need all this stuff in Monterey? I mean, this is all your CDs.

  Kirsten Bennett : Three days ago you said this stuff was a fire hazard.

  Charlie Salinger : All I'm saying is you don't have to move everything you own.

  Kirsten Bennett : I'm not, Charlie. And I'm not forwarding my mail. And I'm not gonna give out my number down there, 'cause I still live here, okay?

  [they drop the boxes and sigh] 

  Kirsten Bennett : Oh, God, I still have a bunch of boxes left.

  Charlie Salinger : Wait. Wait. Wait. Could you just? Could we just sit for a minute?

  Kirsten Bennett : You don't wanna get this done first?

  Charlie Salinger : No. No. All we ever do is get stuff done. That's not enough.

  [they sit in the stairs] 

  Charlie Salinger : I mean, I-- I-- I actually-- I miss you. These last few days I miss you.

  Kirsten Bennett : Charlie

  Charlie Salinger : And I don't get it. I... I thought you said you were happy with the way things were. We both said it. That-- That things were really clicking for us.

  Kirsten Bennett : Yeah, they are.

  Charlie Salinger : Then why would you change everything?

  Kirsten Bennett : Because I really want this job. And I want all of this too.

  [looks at the house] 

  Kirsten Bennett : I want you.

  Charlie Salinger : Yeah, well, it's-- It's not that simple.

  Kirsten Bennett : Okay. Then, we'll work on it. We'll talk about stuff, about problems, and we'll figure it out, okay?

  Charlie Salinger : I just... I keep thinking that none of this would've happened if we just decided to get married.

  Kirsten Bennett : I don't know. Maybe. Maybe if we were married, I would be able to look at the job and say I can give that up. But we're not married. And... And... And that kind of sacrifice, Charlie, I-I-I just... This is who we are right now. This is where I am right now. I know it's not perfect, but I like it like this.

• [in the night, Charlie and Kirsten are talking by the phone, while having dinner] 

  Charlie Salinger : I told Owen that you'd be home in a few days. And he didn't get the concept, so I said it was like 85 episodes of Muppet Babies. It freaked him out.

  Kirsten Bennett : [smiling]  Tell him I'll bring him a present. So did I get any good mail?

  Charlie Salinger : [checking mail]  Um, well, you may have won a vacation home in Guadalupe.

  Kirsten Bennett : Ha. Great. I'm still getting issues of Modern Macramé from the last time I almost won.

  Charlie Salinger : What's for dinner?

  Kirsten Bennett : Kung Pao chicken with extra MSG. You?

  Charlie Salinger : Um, aspartame and Red Dye No. 2.

  Kirsten Bennett : So how'd it go with the stucco guy?

  Charlie Salinger : Um, he wanted to make it into a remodel, but I eventually got him to talk him out of his vision and patch the hole.
