Frank the Cheapskate
Hitchcoc6 March 2015
Once again vignettes of events taking place in the camp. Trapper is the reporter this time. Margaret wants to buy a gift for her sister's wedding and needs to borrow some money from Frank. He refuses to loan it to her, and she ignores him the rest of the episode. Much of the episode involves a picnic for the orphans with the usual relay races, sack races, an, of course, the tug of war. There is no great direction here other than the fact that the loan is still in question. Frank acquiesces but insists on five percent interest. One of the mysteries of this series is why Margaret keeps going back to this guy. He offers her nothing.

Trapper John

Warning: Spoilers
Here Trapper John is the focus of this episode, along with some orphans. This episode kind of reminds me of what eventually happened in the series finale, where the 4077th take in some orphans just as the Korean War was heading for a permanent ceasefire. Anyway, I'm enjoying reflecting on M*A*S*H, which is one of my favorite TV series of all time. Johnny Haymer makes his second appearance as Sgt. Zelmo Zale. Sadly Haymer passed away in 1989. Jeff Maxwell also returns as Igor, and he plays an essential part of this fine series. In 2018 he teamed up with superfan Ryan Patrick to launch the M*A*S*H Matters podcast.

Soulless episode

Warning: Spoilers
I love watching MASH and I have never written a review for any of its episodes so far, but I couldn't hold it in for this episode. It is the worst episode of MASH,period. It isn't about anything, just a mash up of dumb events. A few gag here and there, but lacking its usual soul. They actually spent 5 minutes covering the games between the orphans and the MASH guys. And a few minutes on that dumb movie. The writers really ran out of ideas for this one. I hope people who watch this episode won't get a bad idea of the whole show, the other episodes are mostly funny. At one point, it gets so dull that Frank and Hot Lips get into a pointless argument about money. Frank lacks his usual annoying air this time. And that's for the worst. Simply because his annoying air is what makes me want to watch MASH in the first place.
