Happy Sweet 16, Mary!
ExplorerDS678928 October 2010
Warning: Spoilers
With the Winoka school burnt to a crisp, Caroline and Alice set out to find another school, but the only one available was private...and expensive. Nellie and Willie could go, but what about the other children? While Alice went to scout around, Caroline assumed her job at the hotel and was once again hounded by Harlan, only this time Standish was with him, to whom he was employed as a body guard. Charles attempted to intervene, but Standish ordered him to go wash the windows. Later on, he finally gets to meet Albert. What a treat. He caught him trying to steal from the till and despite his vehement excuses, Charles took back the money and let the boy off with a warning. Meanwhile, Alice and Caroline established a new school located in an old livery stable. Harriett was more than against sending their children there so they would be going to the private school. To help pay for it, she lands a job as a bar maid in the same saloon where Nels worked, as if the poor guy hadn't suffered enough.

Mary's sweet 16 birthday was coming up and Charles asked Standish for an advance to buy a present, but the old codger denied him. Let with no other alternative, Charles had to pawn his fiddle. As this was going on, Albert lifted a lantern. Charles chased him down to retrieve it and ended up buying it for him, since it was only $1. Maybe somebody should tell Albert that without kerosene, that lantern is useless. He'll probably steal that too. Unbeknownst to Charles, in true Gift of the Magi style, Caroline bought back his fiddle; On the way to her surprise party, Mary and Adam get accosted by Harlan and fellow goon Glover. Seeing this, Charles races to their rescue and gets in a fight. Having learned nothing from his experience with the Galendars in Season 3, Charles is overpowered and beaten to a pulp. Jonathan seeks swift retribution for the beating of his friend so he goes to the saloon and beats some much needed sense into Harlan and Glover. The result lands Jonathan a job as Standish's new body guard. Mary's party was an all-out success. The best gift of all was a card from Laura, written in braille. In the end, everybody was happy, mainly because they were all together.

Fantastic closer to this two part episode. The best scene has to be at Mary's birthday party when she receives Laura's card, telling how much she loves her and they hug, in tears. So sweet. Well, we'll be seeing more in Winoka, as well as more of Standish, a true villain of sorts. It was a nice plot arc they added for the series, but it didn't last too long and things get back on track in a few episodes, but for now, enjoy "As Long as We're Together". A must for Little House fans.

Charles tries to "reform" Albert Quinn
tinman1960200312 May 2006
In part one of As Long as We're Together, Charles befriended a young boy who is apparently a runaway, or an orphan. Albert (Matthew Laborteaux) refuses to disclose any of his history to Charles, who despite other people's misgivings about Albert, trusts the boy and wants to help him.

To gain the lad's trust, he allows Albert to join them at meals, and insists the youth attend Mrs. Garvey's school. Discovering that Albert gambles with other town youths, and has other bad habits, Charles attempts to teach Albert by example, that honesty and friendship are more important that money.

Eventually Charles is convinced that he has won over Albert. But the boy is afraid of getting too close to anyone and maintains an aloofness that has Charles frustrated. This relationship is developed further in later episodes, and culminates in the two part program entitled "There's No Place Like Home."

Walnut Grove in Winoka
Quinn40773 January 2022
These two episodes are surprisingly good and consistent for such a big change, but the Ingalls, Garvys, and Olesons still shine outside of Walnut Grove. We also get to meet Albert for the first time - a significant addition the the Little House series. Walnut Grove and Ingalls-family values are really challenged in the "big city" but the tension is broken in classic LHOTP style. There are laughs - some of the best provided by Harriet and the Olesons - and heartfelt moments and occasionally tears. The final scene of the second part is especially moving.

Staying together
mitchrmp25 July 2013
Warning: Spoilers
The second part of this episode shows a lot of promise for the season. Even though I hate the whole Ingalls in the city concept, I can understand it has it's strengths. Michael Landon and the others did a good job pulling off the episodes in the city while keeping the same love and tearful stories.

The most memorable part of this episode is the end, i think, when Charles gets in a fight, then has Quiet, calm Nels and big, strong Jonathan go after the guys who beat him up. Afterwards, there is a tear-jerking scene with Mary. I always thought the letter Laura wrote to Mary was a bit far-fetched, but it was still sweet.

Albert's appearance is also a great scene. Albert will be the son Charles never had and he's calmly invited into the Ingalls home and hearts in this episode. I love Charles' treatment of Albert. it's just so sweet!

Fortunately, though, the city doesn't last very long, so relax and enjoy it while it lasts!

This is a very emotional chapter
drfernandogil15 March 2024
Warning: Spoilers
This is a very emotional chapter. The strength that Mary suddenly seems to have found after meeting Adam is perfectly combined with the family love demonstrated in her 16th birthday celebration, where the affection between father and daughter (Charles to Mary and vice versa) and between siblings (Mary and Laura) stands out. ). Furthermore, despite the serious financial difficulties they suffer, Charles continues to show his good fortune in helping the character of Albert financially, who is a character who will contribute a lot to the series.

The emotion in the dialogues surpasses everything.

Details: Ingalls girls fall in love easily. He is the third known boyfriend of Mary (previously Johnny Jrs, previously Septh Barton, now Adam Kendal) and as for Laura, it seems that a series of glances and winks were born towards Albert that, as the series went by , they would have become incest.

Carrie is the eternal baby girl, she is a character that has been unnecessary in the series, she never fit into her own defined role.

Why did they return to Walnut Grove, if they had given the city for dead and sold everything? Did the rating say NO to Winoka?
