Judy's going to elope? It was bound to happen sooner or later. Who's the lucky schmuck, I wonder. Let's find out... so, we find young miss Jetson trying an array of different hair styles. What's the occasion? What else? A date. A real dream boat, I'm told. But George could care less who it is because he's late for work... why is always late for work? That's the most overused plot device on this show. Why can't he wake up early? I forget, everybody on this show is lazy, but then, those who live in glass sky houses shouldn't throw stones. Anyway, at work, Mr. Spacely introduces his nephew Sam, who is immediately placed over George, having been assigned to show him the ropes. Now, despite being a highly educated young man, having graduated top of his classes, Sam was a bit of an idiot. His attempts to increase production only caused malfunction and disarray. So while making his new slave get him some lunch, Sam puts in a secret call to Judy, asking if the elopement is still on...ooh, finally something interesting is happening in this episode. This was super secret, but Judy felt she could confide in Rosie who swears herself to secrecy. Unfortunately the dizzy robot lets it slip how Sam and Judy could very well be running away to get married. In actuality, it was Sam and another girl, Astroid, going to elope and Judy was merely helping them out. So they part ways as Judy heads off for her real date. Let the madness continue.
Who is Asteroid, you may ask? Mr. Cogswell's daughter. Oh wow, Sam Spacely and Asteroid Cogswell...they're going to be related? Hello! This is gold! And so the two misers are forced to work together in order to prevent their next of kin from getting married, so they head off to Pluto to halt the union, because if there's one thing big business tycoons hate it's unions. George gets there ahead of them and spots two people who from the back look exactly like Sam and Judy. But from the front, they still look similar yet different. Spacely and Cogswell arrive, they blame George for no reason, and then attempt to stop Astroid and Sam from getting married, getting to the point of the two idiots duking it out on television. Yeah, turns out they were going to be married on live television. Great way to elope, huh? Well, the love birds can't seem to tie the knot because their childish elders can't stop bickering (sorry to interrupt, but seeing as how they're underage, Cogswell and Spacely can legally prevent them from getting married). However, the kindly night court judge marries them and they live happily ever after, especially when Cogswell hires on his new son in-law, who then fesses up to all his screw-ups at Spacely's, who blamed them on George. And so it all works out, and this episode came dangerously close to having some actual drama.
The prospect of Spacely's nephew marrying Cogswell's daughter was a pretty good idea, and I think we should have seen more of the kids to really get an insight as to how they met and how they fell in love. Instead of this being another episode where Cogswell and Spacely act infantile and treat George like a chew toy, this could have been a great opportunity to try something new. I'll say this, though, the premise was excellent. Making us think Judy was going to marry Sam, only to reveal she was only helping them get married, and then Spacely and Cogswell becoming related were all golden. If handled better, this could have been one of the series' best. But, for what it's worth, it's watchable. Jetsons fans should check it out, and pray for all those poor kids who have fathers and uncles like these.
