Showing the Flag
Prismark101 September 2023
The start of the second series. Perry and Croft have learned that the most popular characters are Rangi Ram, Sergeant-Major 'Shut Up' Williams and Gunner 'Lofty' Sugden.

You can sense that Windsor Davies is aware of this and is acting his socks off. He just ramps it up a bit more, but also going for some quieter moments when Williams prays to a Hindu god that the battalion goes up the jungle.

Sergeant-Major Williams wants the entertainment platoon to perform an evening ceremony whereby the flag is run down the mast. Only Gloria cannot fold the flag correctly. Lofty cannot play the bugle and the flagpole falls down the wrong side.

When a Lieutenant Colonel arrives wanting the troops to put on a show. Sergeant-Major Williams is keen for it. The platoon think they are going to Delhi to entertain, hit the big time.

Little knowing that it will be a trek to the jungle. Only William finds out that he too will be going as Colonel Charles Reynolds wants to be away to avoid getting some new orders from top command.

There is an emphasis on some sight gags. A growing rapport between Sergeant-Major Williams and Lofty. A good solid episode to start off the series.
