Guys Just Wanna Have Fun.

Warning: Spoilers
The Taylors are hitting the road for a few days of boredom at Jill's Cousin Lisa's boring wedding. Fortunately, it's going to be near a great lake (one of them), and Tim's got an itinerary of outdoor activities for he and the boys to partake in, in addition to the boring wedding. They get to their hotel at almost the speed of light, and before they can even unpack, Tim rushes out with Brad, Randy and Mark to get in a little fly fishing. They burst onto the lake just as Al and Wilson were enjoying the peace and tranquility of the woods and the creek. The fish just don't seem to be biting. At least not for Tim, as Randy is able to hook a big one. Tim decides to forgo the fishing pole and just dive in and grab one manually. It didn't work. They return just in time for the big pre-wedding barbecue, all decked out in their fishing gear. They stuck out like sore thumbs, and speaking of stuck, Aunt Edna becomes stuck to one of Tim's fishhooks when he hugs her. Next day, Tim's up at the crack of dawn for another day of fun. First, they go running down the sand dunes, where Brad and Randy take a nasty fall, then it's off-roading in ATVs, and then it's back for the wedding rehearsals, all covered in mud. Next, a game of golf, where Mark proves to be a pro, but he's very, very slow at it, then Tim is pelted with balls in a tennis match. They get back in time for Aunt Edna's 98th birthday, and finally, take a trip in a hot air balloon. I think somebody had better call the fun police, because these guys are having WAY too much.

When Tim gets back to the hotel, Jill struggles to write a special little poem for Cousin Lisa on her wedding day. The ceremony was 4 hours away, so Tim invites Jill to come have some fun with them. To relax and unwind. They're going water skiing, and Tim's rented them a souped up boat. So they hit the water. Brad and Tim prove to be excellent water skiers, the later constantly showing off as only he can. It's a good thing he brought along his skiing double or he could've gotten hurt. Now, it's Jill's turn. Unfortunately, Tim became distracted by a guy para-sailing that he wasn't watching where he was steering the boat and almost drove them into a ramp. Fortunately, he swerved out of the way just in time...but the same cannot be said for Jill, who sadly forgot to pack her skiing double. She wipes out, and sustains a sprained wrist and broken nose. She mopes about the hotel, feeling unable to go to the wedding, and the guys' levity does very little to boost her spirits. Naturally, she tries to blame the accident on Tim, and, well, her going up the ramp was his fault, but she DID agree to go on the water with him. Despite her injuries, Jill still accompanies Tim and the boys to the wedding, and even goes up in front of the gathering to read the poem she'd written... Tim has to push her, literally. And she falls. He tries to adjust the mike for her, and it breaks her nose again. You're not helping things, jerk. At least the Taylors make it back home to Detroit without any further mishaps, and after a good night's sleep, Jill is really no worse for the wear. Tim, on the other hand, decided to use the power of his big, manly brain to try and find a way of making it up to Jill, and twelve hours later, it hit him. He writes her an apology poem. It was as corny as the fields of Nebraska, but she gets the point and I'd say they're going to be just fine.

Season 5 of Home Improvement is off to a good start, I'd say. This episode was a lot of fun and had plenty of funny moments. But let's face the facts here: this really was an excuse for the cast and crew to go on a paid vacation and film an episode at the same time. They do something similar at the start of Season 8, where Tim has to reluctantly join the gang on a whitewater rafting trip. The story and acting in that episode was horrible, but the location shooting was beautiful. Same as it was here. The acting was very good, and the montage of activities made up for what little plot there was. In Whitewater, the only premise is that Tim is unhappy and is a stick in the mud for the entire trip, and there's really nothing going on. Here, there's plenty. So, I recommend A Taylor Runs Through It. It's a fun episode with plenty of twists and turns, and a nice way to start a season.
