Sometimes revenge isn't sweet
skteosk6 April 2024
We open with a flashback to 1989 where Duncan fights an immortal opponent, Walter Reinhardt, which ends with them both injured and Reinhardt toppling from a bridge into the water. (Richie, speaking for the audience, will later wonder what happened to Duncan being out of the game for a century.) We later learn Reinhardt disappeared soon after and Duncan believes another Immortal killed him. (Despite what has been stated elsewhere, it's clear no-one saw a quickening.)

Present day and the mysterious and rather formidable Rebecca Lord enters Duncan's life. It's soon clear she has a connection to Reinhardt but what? As strange events happen around Duncan and both Tessa and Richie end up targeted, the episode builds a mystery as to just how unstable Rebecca is. Duncan isn't convinced she's behind things but Tessa (a character who, at times, acts as though she's never met another woman she likes) can understand why losing Reinhardt would drive her to revenge.

It all builds to a nice climax. Unlike the previous episode, the fact that everything has been constructed to hurt Duncan (as opposed to him just bumping into the villain by coincidence) adds a personal dimension to it. The show's makers have criticised the realisation of it but I found it rather effective.

It's a bit weird to hear "You Want To Live Forever" booming out over the last scene though: Sure, it's a nice moment, but not significant enough for that?

There's also a nice subplot about Richie becoming a used car salesman: Duncan's expression when he announces what his new job is is an episode highlight. He also gets a nice scene where he's forced to make a phone call but manages to tip Duncan off to what's going on by being overly polite!

Second and final appearance of Angie, previously seen in The Road Not Taken. First appearance of Sergeant Bennett, the latest of our interchangeable season one cops and it definitely feels like they're getting worse: He'll be back next episode.

not bad Warning: Spoilers
We see another friend of Richies, as he tries for another job, car salesman, gotta love the way he tells Mac and Tess about it.

An Immortal enemy of Macs is back, he, Walter Reinhardt, is sure but hasn't "sensed" him yet and his mortal fiancée, Rebecca Lord, is out for blood. She doesn't know about them, thinks he is dead and Mad did it, also doesn't know that her fiancée really has no use except to use and "throw" out or kill. Mac has his sword so he is "guilty", takes/steels it, tells Tess to meet him and leaves.

Mean while Molly, Richie's friend, brings back car sold to her by him and its hardly working, the boss says as is, they not happy, he quits, turns to leave as phone rings, his "boss" says its a guy who Richie served wants him to pick up check and bring car, Richie has no intention of doing so till "boss" says he will fix car no charge, Richie says OK and if he gets commission from the car and all in writing.

A dress made with chemicals, Tess thinks gift gets it on as Mac gets home, good thing he does as it starts to burn her and zipper stuck, rips off shower to the shower quickly. A doc who makes house call (wow), says she is lucky that she got to the shower as quickly as she did, she'll be OK. Mac knows who sent they talking about it when phone rings. What took you so long Mr Macloud been trying you for hours, Mac says Tess had accident phone off for a bit. More of the Mr. Macloud (Richie of course), then Rebecca has me you to meet her...Mac says got it. Tess asks "Rebecca", no, Reinhardt has him.

Gets to Rebecca, says all that happened, she is what, somewhere in there tell her to fake dead, fights, Reinhardt sees, comes in asking about killing innocent, she gets up attacks, knocked out, the guys fight "going" out the window, Mac wins. Rebecca finally says he used me to get you, Mac says yes, she wishes they'd met 1st, hand kissed good buy, looks like he is going to take care of the body as he leaves, he doesn't let her see.

After having an unfinished duel with another immortal, a mysterious woman appears in Duncan´s store... Warning: Spoilers
After having an unfinished duel with another immortal, a mysterious woman appears in Duncan´s store...

Interestingly, this episode pretty much begins with Duncan saying to Tessa that Richie has the right to make his own mistakes when he (Richie) is about to begin at his new job as cars salesman strictly on commissions, while Duncan seems even more careless than Richie accepting to fence to test a very particular sword with the lady we just mentioned, a sword he had taken after that unfinished duel with another immortal: Walter Reinhardt. And her fighting style resembles much that of Reinhardt´s!!! ...

Thanks for reading.

Weak motivation by a rival immortal. Rebecca is not all-that. Weak story.

Warning: Spoilers
Rebecca played by singer, Vanity, wants revenge believing that Duncan killed her lover, Walter Reinhardt, a few years earlier. Walter is an immortal and rival of Duncan's. Rebecca doesn't know he's an immortal.

There's a flashback of Duncan and Walter fighting in 1989. This appears to be the time Walter disappeared. He ended up in the water and is never seen again.

Vanity was so-so as Rebecca, but I didn't like her character. She has an attitude like she was all-that. And she wasn't.

Why does Duncan ask Richie to go to the library for research? What is Duncan doing? It seemed kind of stupid.

I enjoyed Richie's car salesman antics. He's such a fun guy.

Tessa doesn't trust Rebecca one bit, but Duncan thinks Walter is playing them all including Rebecca. He's right. But Rebecca is still rude towards Tessa.

Duncan has a flashback sometime 100-200? years ago to England when they first met. Walter is a highwayman. They have a little fight, Duncan wins, Duncan lets him live. Nothing special. Duncan appears to be using an English accent here.

I thought Walter's elaborate three-year plan was stupid. All to get Duncan? Come-on! He says it's all part of the game. What did he want? For Duncan to kill Rebecca? So he thinks Duncan will be so overwhelmed by guilt that he'll fight badly or something? This is like "Free Fall." The same type of game was played there. It was a weak story there, and it's a weak story here. Any older immortal should know by now that they all lose people that they love and yet still keep fighting well.

Tessa's art gets vandalized by Walter but made to think it's Rebecca. Later Tessa is sent a dress that has a poison that burns her skin. Duncan rushes her to a cold shower. Yes, they had a ripping-a-dress-off scene.

Duncan fakes out Rebecca dying, tho we never see how they came to this agreement. Duncan and Walter fight. Duncan wins and takes his head. Then they added some stupid stuff like Rebecca going all gushy over Duncan and saying she wishes she had met him first. I rolled my eyes at this. Talk about a fickle woman. It wasn't needed. Duncan is wonderful but it's over-the-top sometimes to have every woman he runs into go gaga over him.

I found Walter as a villain lacked substance. He wasn't even a fun evil villain that we sometimes see. His grudge seemed weakly motivated. I mean you could argue he was just playing "the game," but a three-year plan implies there should be something more substantial for this guy to do all this. I gave the episode a 5/10
