To have a small prologue to my review of this third of an episode, I must inform you that I have always loved and adored "The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy". Not until they released the first two seasons on Netflix was it that I realized how well-written this show was, and "Son of Nergal" is probably one of the very best. The episode itself debates how the most vicious people on (or within, in this case) the Earth are the people who just want to have a single friend. Friendship is a necessity. You would never realize how brilliant this little cartoon is. It is so hard to believe that such a thing was ever canceled.
At the beginning of "Son of Nergal", Nergal sends his newly-hatched child (which we never see) to a camp with many young children, including the show's title characters, Billy and Mandy. Along the way, Billy realizes that other kids from the snowy camp are going missing, only to realize that Nergal Jr. may be behind it.
The voice-over performances, as always, are absolutely hilarious and well-done. This is one of those shows that the actors always did an outstanding job with their own performances. Bravo.
The writing for this episode in particular is a little cruel towards the last thirty seconds, almost enough to the point that it blasphemies the message the episode tried to present. Then again, "The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy" has notably done such things in the show's history of existence. It is absolutely enjoyable, and even contains a reference to Stephen King's "The Shining". Please tell me that wasn't a nice touch on a frozen camping story.
The score for the show has always deserved credit for how well it sets the tone of every episode ever created. This one is no different. The title sequence has always been neat, in my opinion.
Overall, I MUST give "Son of Nergal" a eight-out-of-ten stars. It is hilarious, just like I remember. A little bleak, but always humorous.
