A strong Dept. S. episode

This is a good one. It's a tall order for a TV detective-adventure type show to come up with any plot that the experienced viewer hasn't seen umpteen times before, but the beginning to middle of this episode scores nicely on that.

One of the enjoyable features of this series is that our intrepid trio often is sent to exotic places to unravel a mystery. Sure, it's done via stock shots of Mexico, a Caribbean island, etc., but it's still fun. This episode has something of the feel of a James Bond type story. I think that's appropriate, because this trio is meant to take on unusual cases. The show was not aiming for gritty, police-procedural realism. One interesting point about this show is that the characters always get their initial briefings on the fly: we don't get an HQ with lots of folks around.
