"The Mission" continues with President Ulysses S. Grant (William Bryant) assigning Jason McCord the dangerous mission of infiltrating a band of marauders who strike outposts near our Southern border before retreating to safety in Mexico. Colonel Harry S. Snow (Jon Lormer) is the only person other than the President with knowledge of the top secret plan, for McCord to lead the gang into a trap set at Fort Perry, where the Colonel will be stationed. It's simple enough for McCord to pose as a disgraced soldier turned traitor, eager to avenge himself on the US Army, his grandfather Joshua (John Carradine, second of five) hoping he returns swiftly and safely. His initial contact across the border is Crispo (Peter Breck), in a saloon altercation that puts Jason in touch with Brissac (H.M. Wynant), who in turn introduces him to the 'head man,' none other than General Arriola (Cesar Romero). Jason's vengeful notion is to lead a small force disguised as soldiers to Fort Perry, the location of a shipment of silver and currency being held for one solitary day, long enough for McCord and company to take the payroll without firing a shot. The General toasts the deal, but plots with Brissac to make certain that Jason won't come back alive. Everything is ready when Crispo returns from a raid with uniforms for his men, including the one belonging to McCord's contact from Fort Perry, Colonel Snow, his untimely death putting the entire mission in jeopardy as the party leaves to cross the Mexican border...to be continued. An unrecognizable Peter Breck's fiery, wide eyed portrayal is indeed quite a revelation, Cesar Romero in and out in one scene. William Bryant first played President Grant on THE REBEL, repeating the role six more times on BRANDED in "The Golden Fleece," "A Destiny Which Made Us Brothers," "Call to Glory," and "The Assassins."

An interesting turn of events

I'm not going to reveal exactly what happens at the end of this part, but it is definitely a cliff hanger. It left me wondering "How is Jason going to get himself out of this?" I don't know, but I'm glad I have part 3 so I don't have to wonder!!!

Peter Breck played an interesting character in this episode. I was really surprised to see the part he played. It's definitely different from when he played "Black Saddle" or "The Big Valley!" I'm not sure if I like him playing this role or not...If you haven't seen this one, you should just so you can see Peter.Cesar Romero is also in this episode, and his part is as classy as ever!
