Harmony visits LA

Warning: Spoilers
Angel and Cordy's romance really comes to the forefront next season, but I think you could make a strong argument that "Disharmony" is the first step in their relationship. Angel's just so determined to make Cordy forgive him, that it's pretty clear he's already falling for her. Personally, I love Cordy and Angel together, so I think that this is a great episode for the two of them alone. It also has Harmony coming to town, though, which makes it all the better. I'm a big Harmony fan and I'm always happy to see her on "Angel" or BTVS. She's such a cute, aggravating little thing and she adds a lot to the show. Harm will join the cast full time in season five, so it's important to see her introduction to LA here in "Disharmony" if you plan on watching that season. All in all, this is a great episode and I highly recommend it.

"Disharmony" revolves around Cordy's high school friend, Harmony, coming to LA. If you don't know the back story, Harm was turned into a vampire over on BTVS season three's "Graduation Day Part Two." Since then, she's been wondering around Sunnydale, dating Spike and trying to be evil. After learning that she was Spike's THIRD choice of girlfriend, (after Dru and Buffy) Harmony wounded him with a cross bow and left Sunnydale for good. (For more on that story line, see BTVS season five's "Crush.") Now she's in LA, looking for Cordy. Cordelia is thrilled to see her old friend. She and Harmony are getting along great. When she learns that Harm is a vampire now, Cordy still can't turn Harmony away and agrees to let her friend hang out with her.

Meanwhile, Angel is still trying to adjust to be back in the fold at Angel Inc. Wes and Gunn are making him get them coffee and basically bossing him around for fun, but they're slowly starting to forgive and trust him again. Cordelia is still holding a grudge, though. She tells Angel that they're not friends anymore, which just breaks his heart. He can't stand Cordy being angry at him and he tries to win her over. When Cordy says she wants Harm to help them at work, Angel actually tries to go along with it, much to Wes and Gunn's dismay. Wes argues that Cordy will listen to Angel and that he has to say something about Harmony. Angel finally tells Cordy that Harmony is evil and she'll turn on them. Cordy doesn't believe that.

At the same time, Team Angel is investigating a vampire cult. It's run by a motivational speaker with a pyramid scheme that appeals to all the self-help loving vampires in LA. Cordy talks the gang into sending Harm in to the cult as a undercover vampire. Unfortunately, Angel's right. Harmony's still evil and she turns Team Angel over to the vampires. The gang has to kill the vamps and rescue the cults human prisoners. Cordy can't bring herself to kill her friend and Harmony runs away. Angel finally gets Cordy to forgive him by bribing her with new clothes.

There are some really great parts to this episode. Harmony adds a lot of comedy to the show. Her scene with Cordelia in the bedroom, where Cordy mistakenly thinks that Harmony is gay and hitting on her, is just great. Cordy calls Willow, demanding to know why nobody "told me about Harmony." Willow assumes that Cordy's talking about Harmony being a vampire. So when Cordelia says that she shot Harmony down, Willow is impressed, "You wounded her?" "Oh, she'll get over it." Cordy mutters. And I just love watching Harmony interacting with the rest of the Angel Inc. gang. She's flirting with Gunn, until her realizes that she's a vampire. ("Don't we kill them anymore?") She's driving Wes crazy with her gum chewing. She's adding sugar to the blood Angel gives her. She's singing "Memories" for Lorne. It's really funny. And Angel's attempts to win back Cordy's affection are so cute. He's so desperate to have her forgive him so he's just agreeing with everything she says. Finally, Cordy starts shouting at him about how much he's hurt her over the past few months. "I was so worried that you'd sleep with Darla and lose your soul." She cries. Angel sort of squints guiltily and mutters, "You know I'd never do something like that." I really think that this is the episode where Angel starts realizing that he loves Cordy. He just can't stand her being mad at him. Unfortunately, Cordelia knows how to put people in their place. It comes from being the meanest girl in the history of Sunnydale High. Angel's crushed when she tells him that they're not friends anymore. Even Wes feels sorry for Angel as Cordy snubs him. Angel's willing to lie and bribe his way into Cordy's good graces if that's what it takes to get her back. And by the end of the episode, I'm just so happy that she likes him again.

On the down side, how can Harmony and Angel NOT have a conversation about Spike? It just kills me that Harm doesn't tell Angel that she was dating Spike, or that Spike is now in love with Buffy, or that Dru went to Sunnydale. What a missed opportunity.

My favorite part of the episode: Angel, desperate to make Cordy like him again, buying her bags full of clothes. She was angry that he donated her stuff to the needy, so he gets her a ton of new outfits as a peace offering/bribe. Cordy's bouncing up and down, thanking him and laughing. Wes, after just lecturing Angel on Cordy's need for time and space, is frustrated that such an obvious manipulation worked to win her over. And Angel just looks so darn happy and relieved and pleased with himself that I just have to grin. It's such a cute scene.

DISHARMONY

The Good; Wes and co take delight in humiliating Angel and it is funny as hell. All the Harmony stuff is excellent.

The Bad; Understandably a lightweight ep, Cordy pretty much in denial throughout, she needs a friend and wants to believe she can trust Harmony. Harmony says that there are over 100 vamps in the theatre but they seem to almost all flee at the sight of the 5 strong AI team?

Best line: Gunn "I say nuh and uh"

Jeez, how did they get away with that? The all you can eat vamp buffet

Apocalypses: 5

Angel Clichés Damsel in distress; 18

In disguise; 8

DB get's his shirt off; 12

Cordy's tattoo; yep, definitely as CC stands up. 5

Fang Gang in bondage: Cordy: 5 Angel: 9 Wes: 4 Gunn; 1

Fang gang knocked out: Cordy: 10 Angel: 12 Wes: 5 Doyle; 1 Gunn; 1 Lorne; 1

Kills: 4 vamps for Angel, 2 for Gunn Cordy: 5 vamps, 1 demons Angel; 26 vamps, 32 and 1/2 demons, 3 humans Doyle; 1 vamp Wes; 2 demon Kate; 3 vamps Faith; 16 vamps, 6 demons, 3 humans. Gunn; 7 vamps+ 2 demons.

Fang Gang go evil: Cordy: 2 Angel: 2

Alternate Fang Gang: Cordy: 2 Angel: 6

Characters killed: 35

Recurring characters killed; 5;

Total number of Angel Investigations: 4, Angel, Cordy, Wes and Gunn

Angel Investigations shot: Angel: 10 Wes; 1

Packing heat; Wes; 2 Doyle; 1 Angel; 1

Notches on Fang Gang bedpost: Cordy: 2 ?+Wilson/Hacksaw Beast Angel: 1;Buffy Wes; 2; Virginia and the bleached blonde

Kinky dinky: Harmony is so cute in her babydoll nightie. Her ode to the joys of human blood seems to even tempt Angel. Gunn also seems beguiled by Harm and vice versa until he discovers she's a vampire

Captain Subtext; Lesbian subtext between Cordy and Harmony and then more explicit lesbian text between Cordy and Willow, CC not aware of Will's relationship with Tara up until this point. The cult leader wants to turn Wes and Gunn and eat Cordy suggesting women aren't really his thing. Cordy praises Angel as having a 'gay man's taste in clothes'.

Know the face, different character; 2

Parking garages; 5,

Guantanamo Bay; Buffy characters on Angel; add Willow and Harmony so 16 Wetherby, Collins and Smith. Angel, Cordy, Oz, Spike, Buffy, Wes, Faith, Darla, Dru, Master, Anne, Willow, Harmony

Questions and observations; Cordy's jacket makes her look like a Prussian Hussar or something. Interesting to see Wes and Angel silently vie for the leadership role. Now I know an awful lot of people hate this ep with a vengeance but I think it's great, Harmony is such a breath of fresh air, a nice light ep after the intensity of the Darla arc. Love Wes' Xena moment, "Kill'em all!"

We always said we were going to do something cool with our lives. Now look at us. You're an office manager and I'm dead

Warning: Spoilers
We always said we were going to do something cool with our lives. Now look at us. You're an office manager and I'm dead - Not the most necessary episode, but still had plenty of moments to keep me entertained. 'Harmony' comes in town and rebonds with 'Cordy' who doesn't know she became a vampire but thinks she's a lesbian instead, that is until she calls 'Willow'. The vampire cult thing was a little silly, but the idea worked well enough, it's good the way they wrote 'Harmony', she's evil so betraying is her thing. The funniest scene has to be with 'Harmony' and the bubble gum driving 'Wesley' mad. My favorite storyline this episode was 'Cordy's friendship with 'Angel', she tells him that they're not friends anymore and that he hurt her and gave away her clothes. At the end of the episode 'Angel' tells 'Wes' that he's giving her some space and then all of a sudden she comes screaming in the room all happy about her new clothes- You have the most amazing taste! You have, like a gay man's taste! and they jump up and down while 'Wesley' gives 'Angel' the angry face, priceless! CORDELIA: Harmony, do me a favor, lose the gum. HARMONY: Okay, okay! Sorry. I thought it would help with the cravings. I mean, you'd think I'd get a thank you for not biting any of you. WESLEY: What are you doing!?! This book is twelve centuries old! HARMONY: Okay. So it's not like I messed up a new one. (8.5 out of 10)

The One Where Harmony Comes To Visit...
taylorkingston17 October 2014
Warning: Spoilers
I love this episode. I just love Harmony, and when she finally came into Angel, it made me so happy.

In this episode, Harmony comes to visit Cordelia in Los Angeles. And is having trouble with her blood lust, since she's a vampire, in case you didn't know. Last we knew of Harmony, she was hanging out with Spike over in Sunnydale. But now she's here to see her old friend. It's funny when Angel and Wesley find out that she's a vampire, and rush over to Cordelia's apartment to warn her, and Harmony and Cordelia are just hanging out on the couch, with their hair in towels, painting each others nails. And Angel's like, "She's a vampire!" and Cordelia's like, "I know." Eventually, Harmony abandons her friends, as she thinks they'll turn on her, and she sells them out to a vampire pyramid scheme. How sad is it? Not the selling out, the vampire pyramid scheme. Eventually, Harmony just runs away, after she's confronted.

Overall, I give this episode a 10 out of 10.

Gunn: Now we're saving a vampire from vampires? I got two words for that: Nuh and uh!

Warning: Spoilers
Disharmony is about Harmony coming to visit and the group accepting Angel back into the team.

The episode's overly silly and borders on being lame, but containing plenty of laughs as well. Wesley losing it, it's impossible not to crack up. Some solid Angel/Cordy and Angel/Wesley moments too. Like the previous reviewer, I too see the ending of Angel giving Cordy clothes as lazy writing. It contradicts all the moments before it.

Cordelia: But, just so we understand each other... You and I? We're not friends.

The Vampire Pyramid Scheme
Samuel-Shovel10 February 2018
Warning: Spoilers
The gang's back together in "Disharmony" but they have a tagalong in the form of the new-to-town Harmony. Despite Harmony being a vampire and all, Cordelia protects her and tries to include her in the gang. When they uncover a vampire pyramid scheme involving capturing humans, they must rely on Harmony to get them on the inside. Can she really be trusted?

A cross-over episode involving a brief phone call with Willow, along with Harmony's departure from Sunnyvale after her & Spike's breakup, this one never feels like it really gets going. Half of this episode is about Harmony bumping into stuff and causing general confusion. We still see that shallow portion of Harmony, even at the end when she wants Cordelia's approval after she attempted to kill her.

The actual plot of this episode involving the vampire life coach is pretty silly (I'm still not sure how the pyramid scheme even worked). But it's basically used as a time-killer and a device to allow Harmony to betray the trust given to her by Cordelia. This is the main takeaway from "Disharmony".

Note: The final scene of Angel winning back Cordelia's heart by buying her a bunch of new clothes is lazy screenwriting. I know that Cordelia is suppose to be some sort of ditsy character obsessed with appearances but I really think she's matured beyond this in the past 2 seasons of Angel. This scene no longer felt consistent with her character, especially since she was extremely upset with Angel earlier this episode. Like I said, lazy...

More "Jumping the Shark"
charleswx-4312717 March 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Angel really had no reason to reconcile with his fired employees and even less reason to go crawling back and start working for them. In the beginning, they were 100 percent assisting Angel with helping the people of the city. Angel was having no problem with continuing to do that without them and plus, they were getting shot (because of work that they took on but still blaming on Angel, getting into near death situations (then being saved by Angel but still not thanking him), and still not getting paid for their work. Now, their back in the building that is technically owned by Angel, still getting saved by Angel, but, for some reason, treating Angel like some sort of 4th class citizen. They're rude to him, mean to him, and mad at him but expect him to bow down to them. Angel would be better off kicking them out of the office and hiring a new team. A team that can actually hold their own in a battle without insulting Angel at every opportunity.
