Clever and inventive piece of storytelling and film-making
rpgladston30 September 2005
I enjoyed the film immensely. It was inventive in dealing with four issues in four different styles. It wasn't arty even though it was promoted as a cinema installation. Each segment in the four films are connected by an animated chart that is used by opticians and in my opinion is used as a metaphor to test your vision, your perspective. Personally, I believed this to be a reminder that the film was about a different perspective on things that are seemingly familiar. i also liked the way the chart's aspect ratio is 4.3 whilst the four films are 1.88. I have seen some of his earlier films at the ICA in London, and when Lux Cinema were operating in Hoxton Square and Palindrome is a departure from those. I get the feeling he is really enjoying being what he is - an artist, a filmmaker - and quite clearly defining his voice with this film. For me, there was only one question left still unanswered, 'Who was the girl in sex?'
