The original is better
cheezdontgowitm319 March 2008
Warning: Spoilers
Super Mario 64 DS is a great remake of the original, but there are things that make the original better. So let's start out with the bad stuff. The controls are kind of clunky, it's a bit weird using the Touch Screen as an analog stick, oh, and in order to get to play as all the characters, you have to unlock them (EVEN MARIO!!!), and then the graphics, even though they're better overall than the original, slightly, and they look great...from a distance. Up close all you see is just a bunch of pixel squares. My final complaint about this game is probably the big one that REALLY makes the original better. It's the difficulty. Since this game features Yoshi, Mario, Luigi, and even Wario, the game's a lot easier, and not just the characters, the power-ups they have.

So in the original, Mario has three power-ups, the Wing cap, the Metal cap, and the Vanish cap. All of those have returned, but first of all there are no caps, this time it's a flower which kind of sucks, and they're split up with the other characters along with some new ones. So Mario has the wing cap AND a new one which is the balloon which makes him float. He's the only character to have two power-ups, because nobody else can use the wing cap. The Wing cap is obtained by a feather...not a hat, and then the balloon is obtained by the flower. Mario is the balanced character, who can break bricks, he can jump quite good, and is pretty fast, and can also perform the wall kick. Luigi, who's power-up is the Vanish cap, which of course, is obtained by the flower, and can run through enemies and certain walls. Luigi has the best jumping skills, he can still break blocks, he's pretty fast, and his jump is fantastic. He can walk on water for a bit, too. Now Yoshi, has the other new power-up which is to breathe fire. Yoshi can't break bricks, but has very good jumping just like Luigi. Now Wario, who's power-up, you may have guessed is the Metal one. He gets the flower and turns into Metal Wario. Now, Wario is VERY slow and sucks at jumping, but can break blocks others can't. He's the strongest guy, and really shows that with his power-up. So as you can see, all the power-ups were split with the different characters.

Now I'll give you an example of one of the power-ups making it easier, in the original Mario 64, there was a level called Dire Dire Docks where in one of the tasks you had to go in the canon and aim it at this thorn pole thing you grab on and make Mario land on a platform to get a Star which is in a box. In this one, all you can do is just get the power-up and float there...even though there's 30 new stars, it's actually easier to get them, especially since this time there's a map on the Touch Screen which tells you where the star is located.

The game has some new levels, but not much. They're not those big levels where it has like the 7 star task thing, it's those ones with one or two "secret" stars.

Overall, this is a great remake of the original, but is not as good as the original. If you own a DS, there's no reason why you shouldn't have this game!

Great remake, Controls not so great
bighaben1 June 2006
This game is great! And a great way to go back to the glory days when you only cared about was Nintendo. This game was a launch title for the 64, and was arguably the best game for the system. Now you have the chance to pick it up for you DS. With improved graphics, and new stars to get. Since it's been years since you've last played this game, it's worth getting, as there are 4 playable characters now, and each have their own unique stars to get. Also there are some pretty pointless mini games that'll hold you attention for a little bit. However the game does provide a slight distraction in order to unlock them.

This game rarely uses the touch screen if you decide to take the easier controls in my opinion. While the manual says it's better to use the touch screen to control you characters, I find it just easier to use the d-pad, and buttons to control the characters. Using the touch screen makes it fairly uncomfortable to play, and over sensitive.

There is now a way to center the camera directly behind the character, and you can move the camera with the touch-pad. This is a huge improvement.

Overall, this is still a great game, and I advise you to pick it up, or at least rent it. Other games can easily overpower this game in pure greatness now, but this classic can still hold up, and is a great purchase for someone who owns a DS. You'll still have fun with it, and if you haven't played this game in some form yet, shame on you, get this title, and get it now.

best DS game ever (so far)
JosephVena4 March 2005
Warning: Spoilers
It is basically the same game as the N64 version, with some tweaks here and there. Such as, starting as Yoshi, and unlocking Mario,Luigi, and Wario along the way. There are now 150 stars to collect and different levels. The multi player and mini games are nifty too. The capabilities of the DS take this game to its full potential. The power flowers are cool too. Giving each character there own abilities while equipped with the flower is a nice touch. Mario can inflate like a balloon and float. Yoshi can breath fire. Luigi can walk through enemies and obstacles. Wario can turn to metal and be invincible for a while. Overall this game is better than the original but not by that much.

Better than the first one
mitsubishizero4 October 2020
I should point out if you have a 3ds, it works better. Otherwise, it's a pretty good game. The graphics are updated, the gameplay is pretty decent as you can play 3 more characters such as Yoshi, Wario and Luigi. In fact, you play as the former in the beginning.

The story's virtually the same as the original version save for a few differences. As I said before, unless you have a 3ds, the controls aren't the best. If you do, it plays pretty well. In that regard, I'd say check it out.

It's-a hard to control

Warning: Spoilers
While playing Super Mario 64 DS, I realized it's still one of the best 3D action/platform games around. It's been a good time since the N64 version, I'd forgotten about its simple design, creative worlds and amazingly addictive gameplay that has you hunting for a giant number of stars. All right, so a Nintendo game that's stood the test of time...not a great revolution, but still the classic we love and with new things. As Mario 64 stands, it's 90% the same 1996 game, with briefs of flashback content. But there's a real problem.Because DS don't has stick, the gameplay becomes bad.But this will never destroy this game.

THE BEST-It's still one of the best 3D games around

THE WORST-Bad controls

150-New number of stars

If you liked the original Nintendo 64 version, you will love this (Video Game)

Super Mario 64 DS is a re-make of the original 1996 version. It was one of the most popular games out there. However, many people who remember it, haven't played it in years.

So, when you play it for the Nintendo DS, you will most likely enjoy the plumber's return. You will most likely have your fun because of all the familiar sights. But, instead of just playing the same thing, you will find some extras.

Mario's crew now has 3 more characters to play as: Yoshi, Luigi and Wario. Each one has different abilities and stats.

If that's not enough, there are now 50 more stars to collect, and mini-games too.

However, the Nintendo DS has no analog stick, and using the touch screen to move usually works if you are left-handed. But, that's a minor flaw if it doesn't keep you away from addiction.

The graphics and sound are superb too.

Good: More stars, characters and even mini-games. The graphics and sound may be as good as the original Super Mario 64.

Bad: To collect every star, you will find yourself re-playing the same levels over and over. The controls are sometimes hard to use, and a second analog stick would have helped a lot to make a camera. (I think it should have been released to Gamecube.) Plus, it's not an original game. (It's a re-make.)
