Masterpiece of gender equality
zzmale11 March 2004
This movie is great but in order to really appreciate it, the audience needs to know the dross in the traditional Confucian teaching first.

In the rapid Chinese expansion thanks to the reform, there was the resurgence of traditional Chinese culture, but very unfortunately, such resurgence is blind because it does not distinguish the virtue and the dross of the traditional culture, such as the discrimination against women in the traditional Confucian teachings. One of such result is the keeping of mistresses by men once they become successful economically and financially, which is accurately depicted in this movie.

This is why this movie is so great because it showed (based on the true story) that women can be equally successful and need not to be depend on men.
