Understated but emotionally involving

A businessman is on his way to a conference when he decides to stop at a service station to get some sleep rather than drive on. While drinking coffee he spots Freya, the girl whom was in the car with his daughter when she crashed and was killed. The two get talking revealing emotional scars in both their lives and leading to a change in the directions of their lives.

The plot suggests a low-key drama and that is exactly what this is. The film seems to realise that the emotions we're dealing with are complex and that a 10 minute film isn't enough to deal with them fully. So it decides to leave us with questions and let us do a lot of work ourselves. In some ways this is a little flaw but with hindsight it must have been the only way to do it. Some of the happenings between Paul and Freya are a little hard to swallow - well just the one, but overall their confessions are involving.

Subtle and understated are not words that come to mind when I think of John-Jules - he is best known for the screaming vain Cat in Red Dwarf. However here he is quiet and does well with a difficult and scarred character. Butler is also good although her complex character is not as well explored for my money. The two together are good and you do feel like there is an emotional history that exists between the two of them even if they haven't met for years.

Overall I enjoyed this and felt involved in the story. The plot did leave some gaps and the emotional depth within the two characters was never going to be easy to convey fully in 10 minutes. However they are created well enough and, when Paul calls his wife again at the end of the film you believe things have changed for both of them.
