A great movie....for the right type of person
asaidi-211 August 2002
If you're the type of guy who watches "The Man Show" and professional wrestling on TV and reads magazines like "FHM" or "Maxim", then by this movie immediately. You'll love this film. This movie is sort of an updated version of "Weird Science" for the guys who were the right age to love that movie when it came out in the 80s.

Just like "Weird Science", there's the nice guy and his somewhat funny and somewhat annoying friend. Instead of being kids in high school they now work in a lab at a University (I think they filmed it at UCLA), instead of parents they have a controlling boss, and instead of a mean older brother they have something far much worse. They don't create a woman from a Barbie doll this time, they clone a real woman. So, they have the original woman to deal with.

The girl is updated too. The guy and his friend mold the clone into the ultimate man in a woman's body. She loves drinking beer and watching sports. The type of guys I mentioned at the beginning of this review would do anything to be dating a girl like this.

However, for everyone else, the movie does have some nice moments. Some of the actors give funny performances including Desmon Askew and (the always great) Eugene Levy. Ali Landry does a very good job in both her roles (playing the real girl and the clone). Also, the special effects for the scenes where the real girl meets her clone are fairly well done.

Like I said, this movie is made for a certain type of man, but there are a few things in it that would appeal to other types of people.

Not as bad as it could have been ...
donguthrie1 July 2004
And actually pretty funny. The science is silly, the acting questionable, the plot predictable. But I dare you not to laugh, often and out loud. Ali is drop-dead sexy. And you have to give her credit for pulling off the dual role as well as she does. Eugen Levy has some funny moments, though he is mostly wasted in this film. The male leads are nobody anybody knows, but they do okay and get the funniest lines. The conclusion is trite and rushed; you can almost pinpoint the exact moment the budget ran out on this one.

The DVD has more features than you normally would expect from a straight to video release, including some pretty goofy outtakes. All in all, if you can pick it up at a discount (my copy was less than $6), Repli-Kate is worth the price of admission.

Repli-this!
=G=7 August 2002
In "Repli-Kate", a college microbiologist clones a beautiful woman, takes her home, and teaches her to be the stereotypical male's ideal: A woman who is a slob, chugs brewskis, burps, curses, gobbles pizza like a pig, wants sex all the time, etc. A surprisingly enjoyable but unsophisticated little comedy romp with babe-alicious Landry as both the clone and the clonee, "Repli-Kate" will likely appeal most to the college crowd. Silly, but fun
bioscoopzaal30 March 2002
Men always dream about a 'perfect' woman, a woman who likes football, drinking beer and sex. In this film, two scientists accidentally clone a beautiful reporter and program her to be the perfect woman. But the clone is more than they bargained for and soon they find out that having sex all day isn't all fun. Things complicate even more when the original woman turns up and the boys have to deal with both women.

Repli-Kate is to some extend a pretty entertaining film. The script may be predictable and the acting an directing are a bit tame, but the film manages to sustain it's charm al through to the end and provides some big laughs. I recommend watching this film with a big audience, best of all on a filmfestival. I'm pretty sure it'll only be half as funny on TV. Check it out, if you like it silly and a bit sexy. 6.5/10

Great Movie... FUNNY
jimmysnippey671 June 2004
This movie is great... funny and sexxy... enjoyed the sex scenes Highly recommend this one.... Great date movie... she will love it. If she does not enjoy this movie then you will not enjoy being with her/him... Don't know how we missed this one at the theater. Rent it today and laugh tonight... I know it is a brainless type of movie but that is what we want ...

the ability to escape the pressures of the day and give your brain some time off. It will make you feel better about yourself... An enjoyable film with action and comedy and some parts will make to laugh until you are rolling in the floor. Not to mention the opportunity to enjoy Ali Landry as Beauty & Beast. At least a B+ not an animal house but very entertaining.

I liked it
Paguma13 May 2003
The Acting was weak, the science was completely nonsensical, but for some strange reason, I still enjoyed myself. It was fun, as long as you weren't looking for a reason to not like it. I mean there were plenty of weaknesses in the film, but I can't believe the makers didn't know that. It's all about just telling a simple fun story.

Eugene Levy looks like he was having fun.

Good Lord above
colfersean15 February 2004
My God. This is an awful film. How anyone thought this would be a success is beyond me. Landry looks like a fish out of water (a fish with a good body, I'll have you, but a fish nonetheless), and the direction and script are frankly laughable. A definate no-go for anyone who does not wish to undergo the same horrible experience as yours truly. 0/10

American-Pie-Style comedy with great american humor
dfnsk30 July 2003
Yes, this comedy is as stupid as any American-Pie-Style movie. But the difference between `Repli-Kate' and others is humor, that became more lambent. This film doesn't try to sway you, `Repli-Kate' is just sexy and funny performance! But there's only one minus - soundtrack is really worthless.

And Ali Landry was at least great! She managed to combine represent two completely different characters: feminine Kate-original and Kate-clone(I really enjoy her dialogues, 'cause of her vocabulary, that contains only phrases from the movies and TV shows). So I think that Ali Landry is very talented young star. She didn't damaged by silly teen comedies and I hope that her following movies would be more serious.

So, 6+/10

Great Fun!
dfusion21 May 2002
This is just a great (albeit silly) comedy and nothing more...I had never seen nor heard of Ali Landty before, but she is not only great looking but also very convincing in her role(s).

The movie itself is fast paced and short enough to keep you from being bored, since obviously there isn't a great exciting plot to keep the viewer waiting for more.

6.5/10 Rent the DVD and watch it with Friends, beer and pizza!

Ali Landry is gorgeous
Harbert117 April 2007
I watched this movie because I had seen the bar-room scene on YouTube. It was all about Ali Landry. Forget the science that supplies the basic premise for the film, it is all hokey (though the book Landry is reading when we first meet her is a currently important text), but if you go along with the impossible premise of the story, it raises some questions that my wife and I enjoyed talking about. I wondered if some of the guys in our society would understand that this film is about them, but they don't get it, just as Landry - thinking like a man - does not get it. The film is full of stereotypes, but they are all fairly enjoyable, and together they make something that is greater than the sum of the parts. But above all - it is Landry who shines as she plays two different roles to the hilt.

Not a wonder, but very funny !
Bix-1030 March 2002
Of course, a movie showing a gorgeous girl (I had never seen this Ali Landry before), who loves sex, football and beer, may seem very "macho".

That's exactly the feeling I had on the first minutes; quickly, the roles are reversed : the girl (the Repli-Kate) is the one who doesnt want to be romantic, who only thinks about sex and the guy (Max) is the one who has headache and who "wants to talk" ...

This is of course a huge "cliché" reversal, but it is nicely done, and will make everyone laugh anyway - man and women .. until everyone realizes that what men like in women are those things they (the men) are always complaining about ;)

This comedy has a lot of "Vaudeville" situations, especially when it ends in Jonas's house with both Kate and several ex's & suitors.

Although there are some sexual suggestions in the film, it is always politically correct, not with a strong language, and it can be seen by children - who won't understand everything of course.

"Ten minutes of silence!" (those who have seen will see what I'm talking about !)

Good concept and Ali Landry shines, but a little too much sleaze
Wuchakk17 August 2020
A student working in the genetics department of UCLA (James Roday) inadvertently creates a clone of an unavailable student he wanted to date (Ali Landry Monteverde). He & his sidekick (Desmond Askew) program the clone to like guy things, like beer, pizza, football and sex, but things don't turn out as they imagined. Eugene Levy is on hand as their professor.

"Repli-Kate" (2002) has a good concept, similar to "Weird Science" (1985), but with less innocence. Roday makes for a well-meaning protagonist while Askew is likable as the sex-obsessed sidekick, albeit a tad annoying. Meanwhile no-name Landry shines as the titular Kate, both real person and clone. She's reminiscent of Nancy Kovack and makes the movie worth checking out. Unfortunately, for me, the flick's ruined by a little too much sordidness. For instance, there's a foursome scene that includes a dog. Need I say more?

The film runs 1 hour, 35 minutes and was shot at UCLA & areas nearby.

GRADE: C/C-

James Roday really cute
gwynhafar17 January 2011
The ONLY reason I wanted to see this film was because I wanted to see James Roday in a different role. He was such a cutie in this film. I think this was his chance to do a "Real Genius" role, and it's really not as bad as some of the reviewers think. It is a genre film but still quite enjoyable.

With James' new stardom in Psych, it would behoove the owners of this film to release it to DVD again. I'd buy it.

I'd also like to see Miss Match and First Years, but they are really hard to find now. What a missed opportunity for the film gurus.

You can see some of his signature Shawn Spencer reactions, but Roday also conveys the underlying text of frustrated and socially shy science geek very well. It is worth a look.

Is it possible to _not_ laugh of the movie? Great acting if i must say so.. Ali Landry playing as a sexy and natural woman, trying to find the right one and the right job inside genetics... Well, _most_ men's aint always looking for that type of girl, but those who do, got some brain.. :) No wonder why this movie was as cool as i thought it would be.. those who produced this movie also produced my all time favorite comics, American Pie 1 & 2! A top notch this one.. alltho you sure get abit confused in the end by all the clones and the chit chat, but still, a TOP NOTCH! :) Don't miss this one..!

New Lad Culture
JamesHitchcock22 June 2020
"Repli-Kate" is a latter-day version of "Weird Science", done in the style of the "gross-out" comedies of the late nineties and early noughties. Whereas the male protagonists of "Weird Science" were teenage schoolboys, "Repli-Kate" is set on the campus of an American university and the main characters are all twenty-somethings. Max Fleming is a brilliant young research scientist working on cloning research- so brilliant that he has invented a machine capable of cloning any living creature, although his unpleasant superior, Dr. Jonas, is trying to steal the credit.

Despite his brilliance, however, Max does not seem to have much luck when it comes to romance. He thinks his luck has changed when he meets Kate Carson, a beautiful journalist who is writing a magazine article on his work, but it turns out that Kate already has a boyfriend, a rock star named Derek. And then his luck does change. An accident with his machine leads to Kate being cloned. The clone, whom Max names Repli-Kate, is fully adult and identical in appearance to the original Kate, but having only recently been called into existence is completely ignorant of the ways of the world. Max and his British friend and colleague Henry decide to educate her.

It has been said that every man's ideal woman is himself incarnated in the body of a beautiful girl, and this is the sort of woman that Max and Henry try to turn Repli-Kate into. Both men, especially Henry, are members of what has been called the "New Lad Culture" of the noughties, a culture embodied in magazines like "FHM" and "Maxim" and revolving around sport, violent action movies, heavy drinking, fast cars and sex uncomplicated by any emotional baggage. Repli-Kate learns her lessons well. By the time Max and Henry have finished with her she is a foul-mouthed, hard-drinking, vulgar, bisexual good-time girl.

No doubt the film provided much amusement to the New Lads of 2002, but if those New Lads had stopped to think about it, they would have realised that much of the comedy is actually aimed at them and their way of life. Max (whose commitment to the New Lad cause was never wholehearted) decides that Repli-Kate is not the sort of girl he wants and that he would much rather have the gentle and feminine original Kate (who is now back on the market, having split up with the womanising Derek). He realises that if he is repelled by laddish bad behaviour in a woman, then women must find it repellent in a man, and that if he wants to be Kate's boyfriend he had better change his ways. Henry, admittedly, remains a thoroughgoing New Lad to the end, but then the scriptwriters wanted a happy ending for Repli-Kate as well, and she and Henry deserve one another. (An intriguing reversal of all those comedies in which British characters are portrayed as more genteel and refined than their brash, folksy American equivalents).

The lovely Ali Landry certainly had the looks of a Hollywood goddess, but she never really became an A-lister. This was one of her few leading roles in a feature film. Nevertheless, she succeeds well here in her double role as the sweet-young-thing Kate and her ridiculously over-the-top New Lass alter ago.

Some "gross-out" comedies could be just gross- "The Sweetest Thing", also from 2002, and "The Heartbreak Kid" from 2007 struck me as particularly nasty examples- but "Repli-Kate" is considerably better than those two dismal examples. Admittedly, it contains its fair share of jokes about sex and bodily functions, and I would not recommend it to anyone of a puritanical disposition. It does, however, contain some genuinely funny moments, and there actually is some point to it, with its satirical barbs aimed not just at boorish New Laddism but also at scientists like the arrogant, egotistical Jonas who cares more for advancing his own reputation than he does for advancing human knowledge and who cares nothing at all for ethical considerations. (Max puts his finger on one of the main ethical objections to human cloning, namely that a real-life Repli-Kate would be totally unable to live a normal life away from the media spotlight). What starts off as a bog-standard smutty comedy ends up as a vehicle for some surprisingly sharp social comment. 6/10

Disappointing
neil-47631 October 2010
Warning: Spoilers
Brilliant but nerdy research scientist Max inadvertently creates a replica of gorgeous journalist Kate, and chaos ensues.

This is a fun idea, and James Roday and Ali Landry are engaging as Max and Kate.

Now we get to the negatives:

1. Desmond Askew is simply awful as Max's crass and idiotic buddy Henry;

2. The science aspect, while only a maguffin, needed a little more attention devoted to it (cloning does not produce fully grown clones, for instance);

3. Max's crass and idiotic buddy Henry is awful;

4. Max's behaviour is even less credible than most protagonists in this kind of movie;

5. Eugene Levy does not play an unsympathetic character as well as a sympathetic one;

6. His comedy moustache is neither necessary nor funny;

7. Todd Robert Anderson's irritating lab assistant is irritating but not funny:

8. Henry, Max's crass and idiotic buddy, played by Desmond Askew, is awful. Profoundly. I'm not sure I conveyed this adequately.

9. The script is.... not great.

yep, it's dumb... and it's funny
JamieWJackson1 June 2014
The thing about this dumb movie is that they never tried to pretend you wouldn't notice that it's dumb. They just opted to have fun anyway and you get to watch. Occasionally the acting is almost OK, but that never gets in the way of this being a dumb, but fun, movie. Obviously there are plenty of plot holes and practically everything is contrived, but they never give us a reason to care about that.

Two Ali Landrys? Nice! Ali looking yummy while chugging beers and burping? Of course we want to see that!! This is the kind of movie that probably came from a couple of friends making each other laugh while brainstorming at a party, or something. It never gets much above that level, but it doesn't try to. It's fluff, but it's fun fluff. If that's what you're looking for, you'll enjoy it.

Be warned that it does get somewhat raunchy. While there's not quite any actual nudity, there is plenty of "adult situation" material.

more off-putting than any bit of turn-on
RavenGlamDVDCollector23 October 2017
Ali Landry. The other pretty girl from WHO'S YOUR DADDY. So, I did some research, and found she was in this. Well, to come straight to the point: Would I advise it to Ali Landry fans? Let me put it this way, if you don't like Ali, you needn't bother, because her appeal is pretty much what the movie is about. But some fans would be put off by her performance (that is, the way the script sends her careening out of control all over the scenery. She is in the dual role of the glam knock- out and the clone of the glam knock-out. Bear in mind that the clone has the body of a former Miss USA but the mind of, like, a 10 year old ill-behaved boy.

I think she shot her whole showbiz career in the foot with this belching, beer-swilling, sex-crazed character, attracted to everything bad and embarrassing. Particularly embarrassing.

I kept thinking about a movie that nobody else here is even gonna have ever heard about. EMBRYO, from around 1976. Not as if that one is some grand old classic, quite the opposite - it was trash. The other movie that kept popping up for me, was SPLASH, from around 1984. Don't try to tell me the people who made this, didn't see SPLASH, 'cause right down to Eugene Levy, there are some similarities, especially in the far-off public nudity scene.

All in all, if you like Ali Landry, don't think you're gonna like this all the way. As a showcase for Ali, this one has some good moments. But loads AND LOADS more bad ones. I mean, LOADS. Ranging from kinda disgusting to just embarrassing AND BECOMING QUITE THE HELL IRRITATING.

Well, if you're an idiotic schoolboy type, you're gonna guffaw through almost the whole thing.

This is a really dumb movie. But it's also a really FUNNY movie. The science is questionable, the plot is predictable and the acting hardly the stuff of Oscars. But the movie is a HOOT. Funny funny funny, with pretty girls and bawdy humour.

Funnier than I expected
kirkendog1 March 2023
If you've watched some other NL movies they are usually some of the worst made like Another Dirty Movie, that was horrible & so bad it makes this movie quite good in comparison.

It's not as good as Airplane but it has it's moments that are hilarious, this kind of humor is more for M though but F who aren't so uptight may enjoy it.

Ali Landry is not a great actress but she did better in this movie than a lot of big name actresses have done in some movies in their careers. I'm sure she wasn't given more roles in movies because she was too perfect in men's eyes but we'll never know, maybe she wasn't willing to give them what they wanted on the casting couch.

For the 1 reviewer who had to point out this was really a slam on M, showing them how horrible it is for F to date M who act like this. This may be true if all M were over the top bad like they portrayed in the M version of Ali, but even the 2 creators were sensitive M who aren't even close to that character, so not all M act like this. It's usually the dumb jock who acts like that, not nerd guys working in science.

Besides, it's F who date those guys & ALWAYS pick the bad boys over the good guys (because of looks or money), which is why nice guys always finish last. That's reality, so F have created this not M. If all F around the world would only date the average looking to nerd guys, the nice ones, all of the bad boys would change overnight because they'd find out their personality is not winning over the F.

You could even reverse the story & you'd have the same results. How many F would be able to handle another drama queen F for the rest of their lives? Maybe the L but the other F would be ready to go back to M after a few months.

If chicks were guys ....
mgulev23 July 2002
Ok, it´s been done before (Weird Science, Multiplicity to name a couple), but the new twist is conditioning a girl to like the things guys like. And that´s funny! It´s a totally far out situation to see a girl act like a guy and that´s were 90% of the laughs fall. The rest fall in the usual Three´s Company mixups and is largely predictable. My main problem with the movie is Ali´s acting. In the beginning she really doesn´t seem comfortable acting her new role; she gets better at it though. Well worth watching! If for no other reason than to see how guys would cower if their girl acted like them.

Surprisingly good
Mattias4 May 2008
Warning: Spoilers
I really didn't expect much when I sat down to watch this. After all, what can you expect from a movie that has "National Lampoon" on the cover or Eugene Levy in the cast? And to a extent I got was I expected: a "Weird Science" for the 21st century with a silly script and lame actors who has a problem with timing their lines.

The surprise was Kate herself or rather Repli-Kate, played by Ali Landry. I loved how she played the manly Repli-Kate, burping and guzzling beer, a big contrast with the sweet Kate the journalist. I wish the movie would have gone more into the aspect of male and female stereotypes to poke fun at them, unfortunately the producers preferred to have Eugene Levy running around shouting "penis" to everyone.

Very sexy and very funny. Ali Landry is terrific. I never saw her before seeing this film. The supporting cast is great as well. I only wish I could find a girl like "Repli-Kate" in real life. What a blast life would be with her.
