La stratégie de l'échec (2001)
Silliness, non-sense, the usual Robin des Bois
I have seen this Video (actually as a DVD) when I was with some friends in France and we had a lot of fun.
It is supposed to be some kind of "how-to" video, a parody of some (serious) ones you have maybe seen or heard about. Except here it is about how to FAIL your professional life.
Dominique Farugia is the narrator and you see him behind a desk around which is often walking a top-less woman ... totally for free! The show is divided into sections like "how to leave a bad impression on your first day at work" or "how to be sure NOT to be productive" etc. , each one being illustrated live , mainly by Jean-Paul Rouve and Maurice Barthélémy.
There are a few quotes which are becoming cult among my friends (even those who haven't seen the show yet) like "Totalement détendu !" ("totally relaxed") ;-)
For all those who like the Robin des Bois' or Les Nuls' humour, I strongly suggest La Stratégie de l'Echec !
Le dernier trappeur (2004)
a great documentary
I have been invited to the "premiere" of Le Dernier Trappeur in Brussels, Belgium, as I happen to know the executive producer of this movie ... Director Nicolas Vanier has been interviewed in front of the room, mainly explaining the problems they had with the cold temperature there, they had to shoot with -50°C sometimes (*EDIT* : -58°F, sorry for bad conversion)! I tried to view the movie as objectively as possible, and honestly I haven't been disappointed.
This movie is a documentary, you have to know that. People in there "act", but terribly as they are *not* actors. Norman Winther -Northman Winter would have been more appropriate ;)- is a trapper, in the deep Yukon in Canada, and you as a spectator learn to know his tough life.
Wonderful landscapes, incredible views of that part of our earth I didn't know could be so beautiful, are in themselves entirely making the movie worthy. There is a message too : "in those northern lands, what man does, hunting, is a necessity : he takes samples, but doesn't ruin the nature. Without him, some species will swarm, other will disappear". I suppose it isn't 100% true, but hey the movie is supported by the WWF so I guess even if they try to justify the hunting, this cannot be so bad :)
One negative point though : you'll have some repetition, in the succession of scenes as well as in music, even if that one is very nice.
A great documentary, two thumbs up !
National Lampoon's Repli-Kate (2002)
Not a wonder, but very funny !
Of course, a movie showing a gorgeous girl (I had never seen this Ali Landry before), who loves sex, football and beer, may seem very "macho".
That's exactly the feeling I had on the first minutes; quickly, the roles are reversed : the girl (the Repli-Kate) is the one who doesnt want to be romantic, who only thinks about sex and the guy (Max) is the one who has headache and who "wants to talk" ...
This is of course a huge "cliché" reversal, but it is nicely done, and will make everyone laugh anyway - man and women .. until everyone realizes that what men like in women are those things they (the men) are always complaining about ;)
This comedy has a lot of "Vaudeville" situations, especially when it ends in Jonas's house with both Kate and several ex's & suitors.
Although there are some sexual suggestions in the film, it is always politically correct, not with a strong language, and it can be seen by children - who won't understand everything of course.
"Ten minutes of silence!" (those who have seen will see what I'm talking about !)
