Great...despite its short running time.
Boba_Fett113830 July 2003
This little film was way better then I had expected. Everything about it was done very professional, not only the acting but also the cinematography and the music.

The film tells in a comical and fictional way how George Lucas got his inspiration for the greatest movie saga of all time: Star Wars. The way the story is told is excellent and done in a good quick pace. Maybe a little bit too quick because the film is over before you know it. I think I would have even liked the film better if it was longer and showed more how Lucas got his inspiration.

Even people who are not Die-hard Star Wars fans will understand most of the jokes and references to certain characters in the film that resemble characters that are from the first Star Wars trilogy.

A great very original short comedy!

One of the 5 best shorts I have ever seen.

What an excellent piece of work Joe Nussbaum needs a feature directing gig. I loved it. Download and watch as soon as you can. It is just fantastic. I laughed all the way through. I am usually pretty unimpressed with shorts, but this is just totally entertaining. I watched it a few times now, and it has great detail. Excellent parody. Large KUDOS!

Highly recommended!

For all who wonder how George Lucas got his inspiration for the "Star Wars" movies, here is how it came about (maybe). George has writer's block and can't figure things out in time to graduate, but people come into his life to help out right when he needs it. This movie is hilarious with hidden references to the "Star Wars" movies and a few of Lucas' other works! Something that is fun to show a small group of people late at night, or just a die hard SW fan. And great for outright laughs and something to chew on before EPISODE III opens on May 19th!

Search the web for this, it comes pretty cheap at $12-15 per copy, and is well worth the money spent!!!

A Long Time Ago, In A College Campus Far Far Away. . .

The origin of Star Wars can finally be revealed in George Lucas In Love a brilliant short-film which gives the true story behind the writing of the classic movie.

This is another well-known spoof of Star Wars & is a brilliant comedy about how it all began. Taking his inspiration from his colleagues, teachers & a woman with a familiar hairstyle a young film student by the name of George Lucas endeavours to write a sci-fi screenplay.

Although short in length this film isn't short in laughs as there are numerous jokes about the films we know so well. Many of these are visual gags but some incidents also mirror events in A New Hope. This film never fails to hit the mark taking inspiration from not only Star Wars but the Oscar winning Shakespeare In Love.

Like Troops this feature defies its low-budget constraints to give a very professional feel. The acting is good especially from Martin Hynes & the film even imitates the style of Star Wars with similar wipes & cuts. Every Star Wars fan should beg, borrow or steal a copy of this film as you can't afford to miss it!

A great creative work
shahrad4 August 2002
Who could think that the story of creation of a galaxy can be told within 8 minutes in such a pleasant way? What a creative work. Everything about this short movie is creative: The music is great(a mixture of Star Wars and Shakespear in Love), editing and above all, the inspiration. If you are a movie lover don't miss this one.

Simply splendid!!!

Nothing more to say about this movie than how absolutely I adore people who come up with ideas like these.

To put young George Lucas into college and show his inspirations for all the famous Star Wars characters is such a simple idea that it is pure genius. I especially liked the Han Solo and Chewbacca inspiration - way cool!

Very charming

Maybe it's because it doesn't overstay its welcome (far from it with that tiny running time) but "George Lucas in Love" is a delight; a playful look at how Lucas ironed out his script for "Star Wars". Key elements from the trilogy existed all around him as eccentric classmates and professors on the grounds of USC. It's a novel concept for an indie short film, and the homage is loving to the point of being innocuous. Put another way, the references are inventive and it makes for something refreshing and very funny.

A great spin on the mythos.

A great short

This is one of the funniest short films I have ever seen. The references to Star Wars are great and the ending is just perfect. If you like a spoof with a little intelligence you will definitely like this short. Great.

Interesting film short
FilmStalker5 May 2002
This short film surpasses other shorts that spoof 'Star Wars.' An interesting mesh of Shakespeare in Love invades Lucas as he takes on film school. There is not much explanation as to why this movie short is so good with the reason being it would ruin the viewing experience. All I can say is if you like George Lucas or loathe him, you will enjoy this.

Great fun!
Mister-626 August 2000
As impossible as it is, this short is one of the best (and funniest) movies I have seen in years; and there is so much detail in every frame, that it not only needs multiple viewings, it DESERVES them!

"George Lucas in Love" not only parallels "Shakespeare in Love" and Lucas' work, but also effectively details how hard it is to come across inspiration, even when it's all around you. Every actor here is dead on and make their parts (though small) very effective.

Myself, being a large fan of the "Star Wars" saga, gobbled up every detail carnivorously; it seems almost every person on the USC campus in 1968 was just begging to be used for visceral input (favorite part: the talk George has with his professor).

If you're a fan of Lucas, his films or just love to see good, funny films, catch "George Lucas in Love" at any cost. Hey, you're on the Internet: WATCH IT NOW!

Ten stars, beyond any shadow of a doubt. Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go buy a pet duck.

Nice, but a tad contrived
litefantastic24 July 2006
I picked this up for fifty cents at my local thrift shop on VHS. It's not by any means a bad film, but I can't help but feel that it was lacking. The idea that George Lucas, badly hung up on cheesy ideas and giving his movies names apparently inspired by product ID codes, finds true inspiration from the world around him isn't a bad one, but it comes off kind of forced here. The various inspirations are just thrown in one after another, and while the parodies are good, their method of delivery comes off a little weak.

Still, the acting was good and the movie, overall, was charming. Worth buying if it turns up for fifty cents in YOUR thrift shop.

Good for a laugh
ZachsMind28 October 2000
After the first viewing, my only complaint was that it was too short. Six minutes didn't feel like enough. It's good to leave an audience wanting more. This film is not only a tribute to two great films, but also to many comedic greats of the twentieth century, including Mel Brooks. George Lucas In Love is a joyful comedic parody... but it does have its limitations.

Upon reflection I surmise that had they tried to stretch the premise to even a full half hour, the end result would have been less appealing. With six minutes, the film does a great hit and run. It's a cute premise, well presented, and the comic timing is nearly flawless. As shorts go it is one of the best I have seen. As movies go, it is above satisfactory. Barely.

It's shortsighted and severely limiting in scope. This work would only truly appeal to those who have seen both Star Wars and Shakespeare In Love as a prerequisite, and any film should be able to stand on its own merits. George Lucas In Love is a good idea for a school project, but has perhaps acquired a bit more attention than it truly deserves.

I saw copies of George Lucas In Love on sale at a local Blockbuster for seven dollars the other day. A six minute film being sold on VHS by itself for the price of a full-length film previewed tape? Maybe if it was with an hour or so of other shorts I'd be willing, but if they played a trailer before, The lead into the film would be greater than the film itself. It'd be like buying a copy of "Godzilla vs. Bambi" for seven bucks. What a gip!

"George Lucas In Love" is cute, but really it wasn't THAT good. I give it a six.

an enormous waste of time
lemmyc-214 December 1999
This is the kind of referential comedy that thinks references alone make for great comedy (e.g., ha, ha! look, that guy makes a sound like Chewbacca!). References in comedy are only a starting point - it's the twist or insight you make with them that offers the opportunity for great humor. GEORGE LUCAS IN LOVE is content to let its references stand on their own. And it's for this reason that it's not only boring, it's a dispassionate mess.

Exceptionally witty parody of "Shakespeare in Love" that has George Lucas struggling to complete his "Star Wars" script in order to pass his film class at USC. After meeting and falling in love with Marion, a fan of his earlier student films, he takes her advice and finishes the screenplay by "writing what he knows". Throughout the course of the film we get to see George's REAL inspirations for all our favorite Star Wars characters and plot twists, and the audience even gets the inside scoop on what motivated Lucas to executive produce "Howard the Duck"! This is certainly one of the best (short) spoof films ever.

Very Good and Inventive short film!
jluis198419 February 2007
Director George Lucas is without a doubt one of the most important filmmakers of the 70s, as while his body of work is often considered of lesser quality then the work of other members of his generation, it is by far the most influential in the field of science fiction thanks to the creation of "Star Wars", the epic saga of fantasy and sci-fi that changed the way people looked at sci-fi movies. With "Star Wars", Lucas created not only one of the most bankable franchises in history, but also a story that has inspired countless sci-fi aficionados across the world. Since "Star Wars" is nowadays a defining element of pop culture, it is not a surprise that it is often referenced in other works, sometimes as a homage, others as a parody, and sometimes as both. Joe Nussbaum's short film "George Lucas in Love", is probably among the best of the homages/parodies "Star Wars" has received across its history.

Set in 1967, "George Lucas in Love" is the fictional story about how Lucas created "Star Wars" during his last year as a student at USC. Lucas (Martin Hynes) is suffering from writer's block as he tries to shape his still unnamed space opera. Lucas has only three days to finish it or he won't graduate, but he is unable to begin writing as he can't make it work. He tries desperately to find inspiration in college, and even asks for advice to his odd professor (Patrick Kerr) but nothing seems to work, until he meets Marion (Lisa Jakub). Marion is a young girl (with a strangely familiar hairdo) who admires Lucas' previous shorts, and thinks that he is talented. Lucas finds his muse in Marion as she encourages him to write about what he feels and just follow his inspiration.

Written by Nussbaum himself along with Daniel Shere and Timothy Dowling, the film is of course a spoof on the premise of 1998 film "Shakespeare in Love", a movie detailing William Shakespeare struggle with writer's block. Filled with countless references to "Star Wars"' first film (as well as other works by Lucas), the screenplay is very well-developed for an 8 minutes short movie. While of course there are a couple of plot holes in the story, they are devised that way to be more funny references to Lucas' legendary space opera. The story unfolds nicely in its short time and always remains focused on its spoofed themes. Unlike most similar parodies, it never relays on cheap attacks and takes its subject with a very fresh intelligence.

It is worth to point out that director Joe Nussbaum shows his love for the "Star Wars" movies without being too respectful and staying true to his comedy roots. Working nicely with both visual gags and jokes referencing Lucas' biography (and future filmography), Nussbaum creates a very creative movie and showcases his very promising talent for comedy. He also knows the limitations of his medium, and exploits the joke to the most without making it boring or tiresome, and always keeping that light hearted approach that gives the movie a really appropriate touch of sweetness. True, the film shows some of the common problems of short films, but the movie shows that Nussbaum truly put a lot of work in this "calling card" that it's not a surprise to discover that he has started a career as director of comedies. To tell the truth, Nussbaum manage to do more in 8 short minutes than many filmmakers do in 90.

The cast if truly effective and one of the reasons the movie works so nicely. Martin Hynes is excellent as George, playing him as an intelligent writer, but lacking a bit in his social skills (without a doubt a play on the stereotype of "Star Wars" fans). Lisa Jakub is not only beautiful as Marion, but also adds a lot as one of the most experienced members among the cast. The rest of the cast appears briefly, but most tend to leave a lasting impression as not only the script allows them to shine, they truly make the most of their small roles. Particularly funny is Patrick Kerr (another of the experienced members of the cast), as Lucas' professor who may be the inspiration for a character famous for its odd way of speak.

"George Lucas in Love" is definitely not the work of a genius, but it's truly amazing when one considers it was conceived as a student film. Nussbaum finally began his professional career as a director in 2004 with the teen comedy "Sleepover". Story says that the success of this modest short film played a major part in he being hired by Dreamworks, and personally, I wouldn't be surprised if that were true, as this movie is definitely something special. Hopefully Nussbaum will deliver another comedy as good as this short, as "George Lucas in Love" seems to be only the beginning of a very promising career. 8/10

Short, sweet, to the point, and very funny
orac-514 July 2000
A lot of film makers would have tried to milk this great idea for all it was worth, stretching the idea past breaking point. Instead, you get a series of sharp, on the nose jokes, tied together with a script that flows well without dwelling over much on any one piece of cleverness. There is no sense of the self-indulgence here which so many short film efforts, especially parodies, suffer from.

Hilarious! Who says you need a studio for good entertainment?
mbjohnson22 October 1999
This was a great bit of whimsy, just under 9 minutes and a laugh all the way. I don't want to ruin anyone's fun, so just take my word for it that this is probably the best-yet answer to the Great and Mysterious Question of Life, the Universe, and Everything: *Where* did Georgie get his ideas for Star Wars?

Worth the time, check it out!

fun, but....
CptPtnia27 September 2001
"George Lucas In Love" was a fun little short. I think it was probably the most creative Star Wars themed parody to come out since "Hardware Wars" came out over 25 years ago.

It's only flaw was that it was TOO short! The problem with this type of humor is that it wears out quickly, but in this case, 9 minutes made it feel forced, and if it had been stretched out to about 15 minutes, it could have been even better. Any longer, then it would wear you down.

A great parody
peefyn1 December 2015
This short is first and foremost a parody, with its gimmick being lifted from "Shakespeare in love", only condensed and exaggerated in a brilliant manner. It takes you back to when George Lucas was writing Star Wars, and shows how his environment influenced the script he was writing. Obviously, the movie is not based on Lucas' true story, it's all fictionalized and quite ridiculous.

Some complain that the movie is too short, but its one gimmick would only last that long. The ending, as it is, is great. In addition to parodying Shakespeare in love and George Lucas, it also says something in general about inspiration. It's also structured in a way where the "gags" keep surprising you, as they are in no clear order, and you never know how many more there will be.

Obviously it's the most fun if you are a fan of Star Wars, but it is really enough to have a general sense of the characters and the plot of Star Wars to see this. You also don't have to have seen Shakespeare in Love.

What a fantastic short movie!!!!
weezer-1310 July 1999
I recently saw this movie and had to see it about three times to really digest everything. It got better with each viewing..What a great idea(combining the two shows) and the acting was particularly outstanding. WHO ARE THESE ACTORS AND WHY DON'T WE SEE THEM ON THE BIG SCREEN OR ON T.V.? I particularly liked Darth Vader (Aaron)........Great eyes and great acting.

BRAVO to all in this short movie......How about George Lucas springing for a full length movie using the same cast!!!!! He'd have a real blockbuster at the boxoffice!!!!

Outlandish parody
briancham199420 October 2021
Does nobody understand that this is a parody of Shakespeare in Love? Even I got it, and I never watch those films. The overuse of Star Wars references in a university context is deliberate. It's supposed to be obnoxious! And it succeeds at that goal quite admirably. The brisk pace and over the top comedic acting serve the goals of this short film very well, as the rapid-fire exaggerated comedy never stops. This feels like a very early version of the YouTube parodies that are now ubiquitous online.

Creative Film. Would have liked to see more of it.
Jdc10216 April 2003
This was a great short. It was creative and funny and I especially enjoyed all the parodies of Star Wars and other works by Lucas, including Howard the Duck. Would this have worked just as a regular feature film? I'm not sure, but all 8 minutes of it is very enjoyable.

Great movie! See it!
winstonsmith_8422 April 2002
Wow, this movie was great! One of the best short films I've ever seen, made by obvious true Star Wars fans. I'd like to see this movie inspire a bigger movie at the box office.... with the same actors... who were rather... excellent. Very good work for such a short movie. I only wish it was longer, and less compact... but it's still great. I mean, you gotta consider the fact that it's an indie flick and they don't have an endless pool of cash.

But yeah, I suggest seeing this. Another great indi star wars film is "Troops" which is just so professional. If you have trouble finding these films at your local video store, search for it with KaZaa or some other file-sharing utility. That's how I got to see it.

Overall, a 10/10, well deserved. Come on George, finance these guys to make a big movie!!!!!!!
