An....Interesting DBZ film....
gigan-9212 June 2010
Warning: Spoilers
This film definitely has great action, but as do they all don't they?? So, let me go straight to the negatives. First off , there isn't much to the story but fighting here. Even for a DBZ film, I got annoyed here. The androids kind of just show up and what else can I say? The look of this one is great I will add though, and I love the ice setting for the fight. Now the dubbed version is great with the comedic aspects of the film, my favorite scene being when Vegeta first punches super android 13, only to find no result at all. "What the--??". He then fires on him with several punches and it was a funny yet tight. Loved it!! The action here is brutal and I think fans will bump the film up a notch or two due to this, but then there is android 13 and that accent. I don't quite understand why the dubbers thought that'd be a good choice for the main villain but if they must...

The only thing more horrendous then that whole aspect of the film is Trunks's line,"We'll see you Red Ribbon redneck". Whoa, whoa, whoa, WHOA!! What movie was I watching?? Surely an attempt to spice up the villains' conflict with the other Z fighters other than the overly stated fact that their prime initiative is to kill Goku. Yes, we get it by now...

Goku and gang must fight Androids 13, 14, and fifteen!!!
Aaron137530 July 2010
Yes, the gang must once again unite in a movie to take on a threat that could not possibly exist in the regular series time line. This one has three androids activated to take on Goku after Dr. Gero's death. Granted, it does make sense that there were other androids, but there is really no place for this particular battle to occur. Of course, that is par for the course in a Dragonball Z movie, then it is not to surprising as the series does not really allow for there to be an other battles than those you see. It is funny to have Goku shopping with Chi Chi at the beginning and the fight is somewhat cool. Vegeta is once again in a movie, I think this was the second film he was in and he does a bit in this one, still he never really got to impress all that much in the movies typically being over matched to the extreme with Goku doing most of the work. Like most of the films, this one too could have benefited having about ten or fifteen minutes more to develop the story more and add some more punch to the final fight. The only movie in the series to have a decent run time would be the next film featuring Broly. This one though is somewhat good and it is nice that they have three androids for the three Super Saiyans to fight at one point so you get to see them all do their thing before the obvious thing happens and Goku must summon his strength to win.

Not so Good
DivineAzagthoth15 May 2022
In my opinion this is one of the most forgettable DBZ movies. The villains aren't interesting and Android 13 is way too overpowered.

It is smart the idea of exploring the numbers before 17 but well, I didn't like this one. I felt it was repetitive and the way he was beaten in the end not satisfying (it was creative, for sure), because as I said, he was too overpowered. The heroes couldn't even make him falter.

This guy is just like Broly. A villain so powerful that must be beaten by Deus ex Machina. Maybe the best thing about this one is that the Z Warriors are able to beat some of the villains, and that's not up to Goku alone.

Great Movie with some Great Action.
lucas-4210 December 2002
This movie is one of the finer of the Dragon Ball Z movies. It's the first movie to introduce Mirai (adult/future) Trunks. Past this is a small summary of what happens, since not much happens in the first place (It's mostly action oriented), don't feel too bad about reading on. *** It begins on a day when Chi Chi, Gohan, Goku and the rest of the gang go shopping and three of Dr. Gero's androids.... yes he has more... activate on a mission to destroy son Goku. Goku, of course, begins his fight with-in the city but decides to take it to a more remote location up north where people won't get hurt during the fight. Of those to show up, we get to see Vegeta kick some pimp bot butt (you'll see what I mean) and Trunks slice open a can of whoop *** with that sword of his. Of course, three androids are enough... but another android arises that is worse than.. uhh, well... about as bad as all three of them put together! SUPER ANDROID 13!! Well, the only way anyone can think to defeat him is with a Genki Dama... but will that be enough?? ***

Anyway, it has some really great fighting and is a great movie to watch again and again. BUT, it isn't too strong on the storyline level, so don't expect much. Hey, only a FEW dbz movies have much of a storyline anyway. Enjoy it for what it is. Some great dbz fighting and one of the most wicked looking expressions I've ever seen on Goku's face!

It Gets The Job Done...
Stefan_Loves_Movies17 February 2022
Dragon Ball Z: Super Android 13 (1992) is a short 46m minutes Action / Comedy DBZ Movie. Overall I enjoyed the movie. I like that it stands out compared to the other DBZ movies by the BRUTALITY displayed on the screen. The fights are CRAAZYY...but other than that, the movie isn't that special. The villain is pretty UNDERWHELMING as usual, and the whole plot is easily forgettable ... Conclusion: Classic straightforward Action + Comedy plot, many fights. It gets the job done. 6-7/10 rating.

Probably the Most Brilliant of All the DBZ Films
ikrani24 January 2016
Warning: Spoilers
No, I'm not kidding. I legit believe this is the best DBZ film I've seen, and I've seen 'em all, from Dead Zone to Resurrection F (dubbed, which is what I am reviewing here).

An instant point in this movie's favor is how efficiently it establishes the characters. We get about 7 minutes of Roshi and Oolong being surprisingly funny to Future Trunks's annoyance, Krillin still looking for a wife (hang in there, Krillin, you'll find one soon enough), Goku and Gohan shopping with Chi-Chi, all while Androids 14 and 15 make their approach.

Oh yeah, the androids. In one of the most badass ways to introduce the goons of the film, Androids 14 and 15 literally just walk through the city like they're the Terminator, pushing through walls and buses and I can't help but love how much of a f*ck they do not give about anything around them. It's pretty awesome, actually. What's more, I get a legit sense of tension as they approach Goku (who somehow doesn't see all the smoke outside, but I can forgive), making their way to the floor beneath him for a sneak attack.

And then literally the rest of the movie is the kind of DBZ action I love: collateral damage (and yet somehow less of it than Man of Steel), ki blasts, characters getting punched, screaming, debris flying everywhere, even after the fight moves to the arctic. The fights are all pretty even with the good guys taking a beating but never feeling like they're completely outmatched like most other DBZ villains will leave them. They take hits, but they keep getting back up and ready to go again. It really helps make the fights feel even, and even after Super Saiyan is deployed the androids still put up a good fight before being destroyed. I don't care what people say about power levels, I like this. I like fights that feel knock-down drag-out scrappy. It makes the victories feel earned, not just taken.

But what really sells this movie, for me, is the titular character. Android 13 has far more dialog than most movie villains and it really helps make him a memorable character. He makes quips, he taunts Goku, he just steals every scene he's in. No wonder they put his name in the title. He's the entire reason to watch the film.

Not only that, but Android 13 is possibly the most subtly brilliant villain that DBZ's ever had, and it's a shame they wasted him as a one-off in the movie. With just a few lines of dialog, he manages to establish himself as an almost existential villain, completely aware of the fact that he has no business killing the main character, that his creator's grievances against Goku (said character) are completely meaningless at this point (since said creator is long dead), but he's going to do it anyway, almost like a soldier, following orders he doesn't agree with. That doesn't mean he can't enjoy it (shoot, the guy enjoys himself too much not to), just that he sees nothing after killing Goku and fulfilling his creator's ambition.

What compounds this thought is how he reacts to being called a slave with no free will. He has a short rant about all the horrors we humans commit with our free will and how we have no right chastising him for being a murderous killing machine. He was created to fulfill a purpose, and that's all he seeks to do, regardless of how petty his creator's motives were. It makes me wonder what he would've been like if he HAD fulfilled that purpose and suddenly been without one.

Would he have gone on to kill the rest of the world? Don't think so, because he really only takes interest in the other Z Fighters when they start interfering with his appointed task, not even killing them, just incapacitating them.

Like I said, Android 13's the star here. He gets all the fun lines, he steals every scene he's in, and the creators SOMEHOW made the one-punch-to-the-gut defeat that Broly and Bojack lost to feel satisfying with him. It's kind of amazing, actually.

That and the trucker hat. The trucker hat is the key to everything.

Would be a 10/10, if they'd fulfilled Android 13's potential as an interesting, complex character, though I doubt they could've done so in the span of one movie. Still the best DBZ movie nonetheless, in my opinion.

Oh yeah, the abridged version? Absolutely hilarious.

It's Good To Be Bad
Just-A-Fan-of-Buuhan21 December 2019
Warning: Spoilers
The first movie to take place during the time where Future Trunks was around, and the first Dragon Ball movie I had ever watched. Oh yeah, here's the plot!

Plot: Goku, his wife, his son, and their friends go shopping in a mall. Unfortunately, however, Androids 14 and 15 attack Goku, so Goku and Trunks take the fight with the two Androids to the arctic, with Gohan and Krillin coming along for the ride. Android 13 appears and takes on Goku, but Vegeta and Piccolo come in as back up. But once Vegeta and Trunks take down Androids 14 and 15, Android 13 merges their parts with him to enter his final form. Will the Z-Fighters be able to take him down? All hopes rest on Goku's Spirit Bomb, but will that be enough?

This is one of my favorite movies in the Dragon Ball franchise, and it's also what got me into Dragon Ball in the first place! Yes, even before Dragon Ball Z Abridged! The fights are amazing, the storyline gets straight to the point, the Bruce Faulconer soundtrack is in this movie... (WTF, it's so good!) ...and the way Goku kills Android 13 is so satisfying! #SpiritBombSuperSaiyanForever

Bottom Line: Overall, this is one of the best Dragon Ball movies ever made, and in my opinion, if you ever had to start watching Dragon Ball movies in ANY order, start with this one. By the end of the movie and once you see the finale, you WON'T be disappointed. And THAT is a promise.

You gotta admit this movie is fun!
trevornthames14 February 2020
I do understand this film isn't really canon to the Dragon Ball Z saga. But the movie is actually really fun to watch. The fact that Android 13 is a redneck trucker makes this so much better. You gotta love how he talks in the film with his southern redneck accent actually makes it pretty hilarious. Like "Don't you lecture me with yo $30 haircut, GOKU DIES!" You have to understand it's not often you hear enemies with an accent like that in any portion of the Dragon Ball Z series, or in the films or specials. I believe that the way they made android 13 out to be makes this one of the more unique and pretty much a fan favorite Dragon Ball Z film, you gotta admit!

Androids, Again?
v2hot4u0114 March 2001
When I saw this movie, Dragonball Z: Kyokugen battle!! San dai super saiyajin (Dragonball Z Movie 7) I thought it would be interesting. Instead, all I got was 3 androids kicking Goku and Trunks's asses. My fav movie in the DBZ series is Movie 13 (exploding dragonball fist). If you want to find out more about androids and how Android 13, 14, and 15 fight and merge into Super 13, be my guest. 5 stars. Could do much better....

Comment on Trunk's sword
websurfer_79 August 2006
Warning: Spoilers
When Trunks gives his last ditch effort vs super android 13, the android smashes his sword to pieces. Then he blasts trunks quite a distance away. the sword would have fallen to the ground and more than likely would have been destroyed completely or lost when Goku did the SSJ version of the spirit bomb. Yet when trunks is next shown he still has the hilt showing from the back. I doubt he would have gone back to the future so soon. Therefore it was probably just a slip on the design team. Another than this mistake it is a well done movie. Sigh i don't need 10 lines to explain how the design team messed up. This will have to do so i can submit this.

other androids
erminahotmail31 January 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Then this is number 7 in the Dragon Ball Z movies then in this movie he talks after the death of Dr. Gero's was killed by 17 18 but when he died his computer that was under his hideout that created three more Androids So these androids number 13 14 15 They have to kill Goku So what do I think of this movie So for me it's one one of the most beautiful in the Dragon Ball filmsthat I liked this film but there were some things This is definitely the worst of all returned negative point How come Goku Vegeta isTrunks didn't transform into Super Saiyan first another negative point I didn't like the three androids 13 14 15 I found them not at all interested because the first thing destroys anything and I just can't understand why they all go polar arctic whyeveryone says for less there is no one there Sorry but we have all forgotten about polar bears and then these are not very strong compared to the androids of 17 and 18 These androids are not very unbeatable at all 14 and 15 are destroyed too simple though the real villain really interestingwhen these two poor ones were destroyed number 13 Open up their prices and it turned into Super 13 So I liked this version of this character much more than the normal version because we finally think about why we finally really have a very strong Androidthis time he stands up to all the Z warriors But sorry but if he could do something similar Why didn't he do it before because super 13 this time is much stronger than the other androids Peppino from the first version of cell and then a moment that really made me shocked Goku using thefourth time spirit bomb but this time in this film when he transforms into Super Saiyan it is Krillin says in this transformation he cannot use the spirit bomb because his full heart will remember he cannot concentrate energy and therefore Goku absolves it even super 13 then This film is enteredeven in my top of the best very nice to conclude the vote 8.

Scrap
maxmages15 June 2018
This is a completely story-less, low-content and suspense-less movie, (more a lengthy TV episode) It's not worth standing on a shelf with other Dragonball Z movies this junk has nothing to offer, the music is stinky boring, just like the fights, the characters the whole presentation and the little content I can not recommend anyone to look at it. The animation is nice, and at least the some fights are well animated.

The worst Dragonball Z movie of all time.
SSJAniFan27 July 2003
Warning: Spoilers
Spoilers

After hearing so many good things about this movie, I was sure I was going to be in for a real treat. Now, after watching it twice, I wonder: what were all of those people smoking!? This film is horrible, with bad music, a horrible story, and uninspiring characters.

The fights between Goku, Trunks, Vegeta, and the new androids were horribly uneven. The three of them are getting beaten up badly by the androids even after going super saiyajin, which has a very cliche' scene of Trunks and Vegeta "just barely" defeating their android opponents. What suprises me is Trunks is actually able to kill no. 14 with his useless sword. Anyway, I won't spoil the ending, but since there's nothing worth spoiling, I'll just dwelve into more of the bad points. First, the Japanese title of the film(The Three Super Saiyajin) is one of the most misleading titles in existence. The three of them only go SSJ for ONE MINUTE! NO, I'M NOT KIDDING, THEY ONLY STAY IN SUPER SAIYAJIN FORM FOR A SINGLE MINUTE! And even though the movie's horribly short, that's not much time. Also, most of the film is donated to Kuririn acting like an idiot. He serves no purpose except to be the butt of the writer's cruel jokes(like almost have his face fried by a stray energy blast). The ending is unwatchable. I am going to say this: there is NO WAY Goku would be able to defeat Super 13 the way he did.

BOTTOM LINE: If you've bought the DVD, I have two suggestions: 1., Sell it at a movie dealer(if they're actually crazy enough to buy it), or 2., use it as a frisbee. AVOID, AVOID, AVOID!

What "Super Android 13" does best is how it utilizes all its best characters at a time period where they were all close to the same power level. We have Goku, Vegeta and Trunks all at super saiyan and Piccolo. Sure we are missing Tien, but still got Gohan and Krillin. The Android saga is an exciting time in the DBZ time-line.

This does raise the question of how Dr. Gero's androids seem to be getting weaker with every successive number. The design of Android 13, in all forms, is nothing special.

The busy town setting and the ice glacier setting help make this one stand out from the other DBZ movies. Problem is the villains here are not nearly as memorable as any of the androids in the series proper. Why the saiyans wait so long to go super saiyan? I guess they wanted it to be a better fight. But as soon as they go super, the fight is basically over. And the way the finale goes is once again pretty anticlimactic. It is one of the 3 basic ways these movies end.

In the end, it's not bad. But feels very robotic, like it was a Dragon Ball movie made by an A. I. Maybe Dr. Gero himself made the movie.

Let Down Warning: Spoilers
I was really let down by this movie. It's not really anything but the story. I love the animation, the fighting, and the voice acting, I just hate Androids. The androids are the worst part of Dragon Ball Z and the films. Cell's the only on that slides by. I find them pointless. So naturally a movie about androids will not appeal to me. Androids in the DBZ series seem like bad rip offs from the Terminator series, (Robots that dominate the future come to the past to kill the ones who can threaten their future. And a human comes to warn the people about them) Hm......pretty similar.....so I really can't like this movie that much but I still do like some parts.
