DIAMOND STUD is an unusual exploitation film in that it has far better production values than the norm and far less exploitation than you'd expect from the what-you-see-is-what-you-get genre. The film is based on the true story of the 19th century real-life character 'Diamond' Jim Brady, a larger-than-life fellow who amassed an incredible personal fortune while at the same time living it large in terms of food, gambling, drink, and the ladies.
This film has good production values but a largely weak script that focuses too much on peripheral characters, thus slowing the pace down to a crawl. There's no real conflict in the story to give it drive and momentum. As a cheesy, dated exploitation picture it features poor acting throughout although the attention to detail is impressive. There's the occasional nude cat fight to grab the viewer's attention, but otherwise the sex scenes are tame and predictable and feature nudity from plain-looking actresses. It's not the kind of film that grabs you, I'll put it like that.
