Mithun Chakraborty went to the south and did his typical B Grade films somewhere around this time. This was literally his last mainstream film which sadly didn't work at the box office like most of his mid 90s films. Most of Mithun's films from the 90s are craps but he still experimented with different kind of silly action movie. However, his experiment only failed. Even his angry act in Cheetah(1994) was unintentionally hilarious.
Ravaan Raj is another typical action film which had great potential to be a well twisted film like Mohra(1994) but there are clichés and illogical goof ups which ruin the pace and flow of the film. To make matters worse, the climax is prolonged and extremely Filmy. Another problem is the editing because the pace isn't strong for long, there are certain moments that do lift the film but the dull moments come and go. The film actual picks up when Mithun is sent to prison for beating Paresh Rawal. Before this, the film is quite boring because of the boring romance and the forced comedy.
Direction by T Rama Rao is average because the dull moments bring down the well lifted scenes. He handles the action scenes, the investigation scenes, and the twist well but the romance and the forced comedy comes in between and slackens the pace of the film. Therefore, the result is a half baked film.
Mithun Chakraborty does a good job as the sincere cop but this is nothing new for him. He does ham in some scenes when he has to shout. However, he never fails to deliver. Madhoo does a decent job but she is not good as her aunt Hema Malini. She has the looks and the skills but she fails to deliver in some parts. Paresh Rawal is typical as the corrupted politician but his change of heart makes little sense. Shakti Kapoor does well as one of the evil characters but he overacts badly in some scenes. Aditya Pancholi does a sincere job as the central villain, the rest provide decent support.
On the whole, Ravaan Raj is an average fare that works in parts only. This is one film that could've been a lot better.
