Though eye-pleasing and simple, Zameen Asmaan just does not work. It is a very typical fare about a child who was born to one woman but ended up being brought up by another. Many films have done this, but the story of how it all turned out to be in this film is far too unrealistic. Full of drama, tears and usual action scenes, this is a very predictable film, and it fails to excite although it tries hard to. The writing is far too ancient, and the film is most of the time boring. On a more positive note, it is made with simplicity, it is quite beautifully shot, and the film enjoys a rather effective cinematography and a good star cast, though the acting does not really stand out. Raakhee acts well, Rekha is beautiful, greatly restrained and likable, Sanjay Dutt plays the simple romantic guy, Anita Raj is annoyingly plastic, and Shashi Kapoor does not impress much in a smaller role. I watched the film because of the actors. I was simply blown away by the incredible Shashi-Raakhee-Rekha starring Baseraa, and I was completely disappointed by this one. As for Bharat Rangachary, I expected much more from someone who worked with the great Hrishikesh Mukherjee.
