Spoilers
Sex & Nudity
- Implied affair between Edmund and both sisters (both of whom are married). It is condemned by the noble characters.
Violence & Gore
- One scene where a man gouges another man's eyes out. The actual gouging is not shown, but the bloody eye-holes are briefly shown. It is not especially gory but it is an intense scene.
- At the end, almost every single character is killed. This is one of Shakespeare's darkest tragedies. A sword fight ends in the death of Edmund. Regan is poisoned by her sister. Goneril commits suicide. Cordelia is hung. Lear dies of grief and anguish. This is all in Shakespeare's play, and the film does not depict it in a gratuitous manner.
- The only disturbing scene is the scene where Gloucester gets his eyes ripped out. However, unlike the more recent film versions, this version is not very realistic. We see bloody rings where eyes used to be, but it is rather fake. The idea is disturbing but this film version does not depict it very realistically or graphically.
Frightening & Intense Scenes
- The ending scene where everyone dies is notorious for being Shakespeare's most intense and tragic scene out of all of his plays. The scene where King Lear brings his dead daughter onto the stage is very sad. He cries in pain, and he then dies of grief.
- The scene where Gloucester's eyes are ripped out is the most disturbing and intense scene in the play. Though this version is not very graphic in its depiction, the idea is quite disturbing and intense.
